  • this seems like it will turn out good. only thing is, if the whole movie's on tripod, wont the film see alittle stiff?

  • Thank you. Not all the shots are static. I also am filming in HD for an SD timeline, so that will allow me to do pan and scans and digital zooms for added effect. :-)

  • A lot of words for common sense stuff with film making here.... that siad it's so important to get this stuff right. It's the details that make or break a film. I wrote and directed a really beautiful movie that keeps getting bounced at the Fests due to editing issues. Judges at the film fests don't give a crap about much else than their own interests and use anything they can to bounce a film that hasn't got the hype attached.

  • great filming tips :)

  • if there is a shot that is moving at the same time that I am in it then it is a shot that Gabi has taken for these documentary blogs - it's not a shot from the film.

    Best

    Rob

  • wow... that looks great! have you been in any "real" films before with lots of people? cause if you haven't you are scary brilliant to know all this stuff... not that your not even if you have... you get the jist

  • loved it, im into cgi location time changes and stumbled accross this, ill be watching the rest of your blog soon, keep it up m8!

  • Very good this week, presented with energy, passion and full of interesting information. Looking forward to the end product.

    ;-)

  • Im becoming obsessed with keepin up to date with your blogs.... Im in the middle og big exams at the moment yet 1st thing i did today when i cam ehome was jump on this to see how evrything was goin!haha.... How longs left in the filming now!?? Cannott wait 2 c the finished film :D:D

  • actually it just crossed my mind you never told us the name of this film. lol, have you named it yet? or are you leaving it as a surprise?

  • I wish my girlfriend was as understanding as yours... I've posted a video response to keep you chuckling, all the best...

  • very interesting insights, hope you take much more time and Episodes to finish your movie :)

  • i've been following you blogs now since quite some time. It's getting better and better. Thanks and keep it up...

  • Another great video! Keep up the good work!

  • Love the videos!

Though the opening music piece you used in this one, we've used on a project at the post-production company I work for...doesn't work for me with anything else now ;-)

If you're going to start showing you working on the computer more (as I imagine you will once you get into post) you might want to look into screen capture software. It's usually cheap & easy to use.

    Keep up the good work!

  • you keep me coming back for more! Good work!

  • Ah, a bit more educational this time! Thanks alot! I really enjoy following your work. Keep it up! Can't wait to see the result. ;)

  • I love how much enthusiasm you have for this project! It seems like you've really grown in your film making skills over the course of this and it's wonderful to watch as it happens! keep up the good work and keep us posted!

  • Informative, insightful, enthusiastic, energetic and entertaining. Love your Vlogs Rob, I am seriously thinking I am not using my potential. So the best word is Inspiring.

I know you must be tired but also getting loads of satisfaction from this. Keep going mate, we wont let fall. :)

    peace

    Spidey

p.s. I know you dont like hights, but when you finished this you will be on top of the world, lol

  • Thanks! :-) I named the next blog after this comment ;-p

I'm not always so energetic though - I have had a few bad days - but when I do I dont feel like picking up the camera so they dont get shown! I will soon I think! :-)

  • My instinct tells me that u r a twin brother of Robert Rodriguez :-D Which program are u using for editing?

  • that's simple. apple's final cut pro. Although I would have used apple color for the color correction as it gives u secondary color for the time continuity part.

  • Thanks

  • Absolutely. I will be grading in color. The Colour-correct was just for example purposes - and I decided that it would be more universally useful to show it in FCP - as it's better to learn to walk before running - if you already know color then you probably already know the tip anyway. And there will be plenty on color in the future! :-)

  • thanks for responding. I understand you have limited time and I appreciate what you're doing here.Best of luck for you. I am waiting eagerly for you're movie.

  • heyy u dont even lose motivationm

    greateo...

when is this gonna be finished?

    cannot wait to watch :)

  • Great vids you're making!

Really good tips, interesting 2 watch.

  • I'm getting pretty excited!

  • Great Video - Loving the Vblogs

  • Rob, I seriously anticipate each blog that you guys release! I love to learn more about different shooting tricks.

  • MEXICO WON A CANNES SHORT FILM FIRST PLACE MATE, what do u think bout that?

  • and yet most of the people have to escape their own country to go to the USA for work to live. How is that award making it better for the poor people of Mexico?

  • Sounds brilliant. When you say Mexico - you mean a mexican filmmaker? What was the film - I would love to watch it!

  • amazing!

  • looking forwars seeing the movie!

  • I think it a very cool thing you are doing. Looks like great fun and you will probably have a great life. But from what I have seen (I enjoy watching your blog btw) the movie will suck. Common, hunting a dear or what it is with a knife?! And it's probably darn cold as well so he would have some thing on his head and hands. But keep up the good work! I'm looking forward to blog 26.

  • We'll have to wait and see. There is quite a bit of info I am holding back so as not to spoil the film to much. In any case these blogs are intended to be an entertaining journey in it's own right - so even if you hate the film (which you may not) - I hope these blogs have given you some entertainment and lightened your day a bit. :-)

  • this is just soo cool

  • Have you tried using "Color" (Part of the FCS2 suite of applications)for your grading? For what you explained on your sequence, it would do a great, effective job easily.

  • Absolutely. I will be grading in color. The Colour correct was just for example purposes - and I decided that it would be more universally useful to show it in FCP - as it's better to learn to walk before running - if you already know color then you probably already know the tip anyway. Thanks

  • its starting to look great..... nice location.

  • Awesome, so he is learning to read now :D

I wonder, from which part of the world those your character originate frome?

  • The film is coming along great. But where is Gabby it wasn`t the same without Gabby being involved.

  • nice it look like you guys have made some amazing progress

how much of the film is done?

  • Love it

  • You are doing an amazing job. You are making it look so easy but at the same time making it look like a professional job.

I do have a question. How do you plan on showing this film and do you plan on showing it in the USA???

  • what is the first song called????

  • now it's looking like a real movie. well done man. a question i saw earlier though and I'm not sure if you answered it, but what about the soundtrack? are you going to compose the score? or will there be no music in the film?

  • Good question. That would be quite a task on top of the rest...

  • I have considered how to do this and have a plan - but that'll be a blog a fair way from now - and I don't want to ruin it for you! ;-p

  • wow thanks for responding, cant wait to see how you're going to do it. keep up the great work!

  • this is going to be aweeesoommmeeee

  • This keeps looking more and more beautiful as the progress keeps moving along...keep up the terrific work!

  • dont give up. it's going to be so worth it

  • I wait for every new post. I love what you are doing! Keep it up.

  • ditto

  • It's lookin' good, man! You're making some real progress here, I'm impressed!

  • absolutley marvelous, I was dying to watch Blog 25 and I actually managed to get away from the wife and kid lol to take a quick peek, bloody marvelous all this editing etc, were did he learn all this ?

  • Books, making-of documentaries, film school, friends or maybe all of them. There is a great wealth of information out there for the would-be film maker if s/he is prepared to learn.

  • as Magnulus said plus from work - the more you do it, the more you learn.

I'm glad you got away to watch it! Thankyou.

  • Awesome scene, thanks for sharing and showing us. Just curious what will happen to your hair after filming? I think you should auction it off if you become famous from the film. ;P

  • "roll up, roll up - hair at 5p a strand!" ...hmmmm. I can think of better things to spend money on! :-) Definitely going to get a haircut though! Will blog it for you all of course! :-)

  • You really are good at not showing the whole story!

No sarcasm there, just I am having to think more now, but I think I've got the main part of the story.

Don't worry, I won't put anything in the reviews, but I probably have got the wrong idea.

Great video, as was the lighting, about Visual and Spacial Continuity! A must-see!

  • don't want to spoil the film! ;-p

  • can't wait!

  • might turn out to be one of the best 1 man show movies made - we`ll see.

  • It's the first one ever.

  • yeah, i really can`t think of anything else like it.

  • I mean, it's the first film to be made COMPLETELY by one person, check out the rest of his blogs!

  • your right i`ve seen the other blogs already.

  • I don't believe that is true

  • He is doing EVERYTHING, and every single credit at the end of the film will be to him.

  • i just hope you get it done i really really want to see this and see how it turns out... good luck as always and keep up the good work

  • thts sick man!

  • A good example of using the same location is the movie 300, they used the same rock-prop for four entirely separate scenes. (I wouldn't have known this if I didn't watch the commentary version)

I have a few questions though, if he's actually going to be reading a dictionary, what experience does he have with reading in the first place? It seems like if he had NO experience, he wouldn't be able to make any sense of it whatsoever. It'd be like asking a man who knows only English to read Japanese.

  • Also, I noticed that he walks/runs kind of like a primate... Is this to show that he doesn't have any refined side to him? Or is it because since he's in the wild he would be more in touch with his simian ancestors?

It seems to me that even if he hadn't been told to stand up straight, he'd instinctively know to do so. That's how humans are supposed to walk, and doing otherwise would be painful, as people who have back problems can tell you.

  • Running - he doesn't always run like a primate - those are just shots where he is tracking animal prints on the ground.

Well thought through comments - thankyou!

  • From his early childhood he would have learnt a basic grasp of the english language, many psychologists have shown that babies have a basic grasp of language from an early age. Anyway if his father told him to read the book and he understood the request, this connotes that he must have hadd an understanding of some english.

  • yep

  • TaxDeducted - these were my big issues to overcome when I was writing it. Reading - he has picked up basics of reading and speaking - he was about 6,7 when his parents fled up the mountain with him in the first place - so would be well on the way. His father, knowing the situation and the need for him to be able to read later should events permit that he can learn what went wrong in the world - has also focused on his learning.

  • I've spent my life reading and writing about the process of making a film. However. all the knowledge i have is almost purely theoretical... and thus... only confirms my theory that film courses are 80% bollocks. The most valuable lesson is that: you learn via doing... and thus: trying to make a film is far better a lesson in film-making then listening to some one (Spielberg or not) tell you how to MAKE a film.

  • So, are you praising this video/endeavor, or belittling it?..

  • I think it is anyway interesting to watch this filmmaking process. I'm not making a film of my own, but I'm still always listening his tips carefully. :D

  • 100% true in my opinion - reading and theory will only take you so far - filmmaking is a tradecraft - you learn by doing and it's the only way of developing your style.. :-)

  • This video is fantastic!

Your blogs are great and I can't wait until the full movie comes out.

  • it's wonderful that you're educating us along the way.

  • he used a car- cheater

  • what do you mean he used a car? why would he be a cheater?

  • You're doing a fantastic job! You're really quite an inspiration. You know exactly what you're doing, and you do it well. Keep up the amazing work!

    Best of luck :)

  • Awesome video! I'm really learning a lot from your videos and I can't wait to see the finished film!

  • you are really good! keep up the awsome work :)

  • sweeeeet.

  • whoo hoo!

  • so cool. man your a pro. how do you know about every different aspect of film? you can do the editing, the filming, the directing, the writing, the acting, just everything! its amazing. so talented. i wish was as savy with film production as you are

  • I feel embarrassed now! I guess the important thing is to do what you love and don't be scared to be a geek (which just pretty much means having a passion). :-) Your boxing vid is funny btw :-)

  • This looks grueling as hell. Keep it up - we're all pulling for you!!

  • I'm still amazed you're doing something like this,Keep up the good work,This is so awesome!

  • Hi mate... Still inspired by your work, which is consistently entertaining and educational. How do I get some original music tracks to you??

  • Every week i watch as you make this Feature film aside from being highly entertaining I have realized that you are doing much more than shooting this film for your own merits. You spend the time to show "Teach" other how to edit and use filters and adjust gamma and contrast. If you were simply filming a feature why would you do that? There is trickery a foot I feel, I am watching you mister lone film maker you and your baited story lines.

  • well of course... the trickery is to try and keep you watching until the bitter end ;-) What better way than to make my blogs as fun and useful as possible - there's too much substanceless content in the world these days for me to just add to it. :-)

  • indeed I completely agree and subsequently have no reply. However i will say one thing and that is that I would watch to the bitter ends no matter what not trickery needed there. I am hooked and enjoying your blogs immensely as are I am sure a thousand other people.Looking forward to your next instalment.\\m//

  • awesome, keep it up with all those explanations how you made it! reaaly cool stuff!

  • wow that really just shows how smart at movie making you are.... DAMN even im impressed =] keep it up

  • Thanks - just tips you pick up over time. The more I can share the better - more to come! :-)

  • I'm really looking forward to your film... i looks amazing

  • I can't wait for the final product as much as I can't wait to see what you look like without the beard.

  • lol! me neither! I cant remember what I looked like. ;-p

  • Great tips! keep it up! hope the both of you are doing well

  • Great job. But I have to wonder how close your are to finishing? And are you going to shave after the film is done :)

  • I have a fair slog yet to go - so patience required! :-) I will most certainly remove the beard with glee and a twinkle in the eye. And I will film it for youtube! :-)

  • you sir are amazing

  • awesome blog, thanks for the tips, keep up the great work!

  • I LOVE THE MUSIC! you are so friggen smart.

  • Great blog again!! I really like the part used for the film.

I have a question for you. Are those blog episodes "live"? Like you really filmed this, this week?

Because there is still snow!! :D

I also like to know what place in Switzerland it is.

    Thanks!

  • Hey! Well... they were. But I have discovered that making a feature film entirely on your own at the same time as talking and responding to people such as your good self on youtube at the same time as editing a tight and succinct blog series - is a little too much for me to handle. So some of the blogs are being edited later than I had hoped which means that some blogs that may have been filmed second might go first as it was easier to edit, some get more delayed than others. But I'm trying!

  • I wasn't complaining or something ;)

But i wondered, because there is still snow. I just happen to love snow, so that's why ;)

You are doing a great job! keep it up!

  • wow ur amazing! it looks like its going to be great! and with making it look like sunset, u totaly lost me. it does look good n u keep it up and do wutever it is ur doing! cant wait to see the finaly piece!!!!

  • You gonna shave that beard once you're done? :oP

  • YES. That is a dead cert. :-)

  • this really does look bloody amazing.... I am utterly and always in awe of you

  • cool!

  • cant wait for the actual movie :) and you are awesome for taking time to explain to us what youre doing and for taking the time to answer our comments :) keep up the AWESOME work and stay warm ;)

  • Thankyou. warm is the best way to be - but you've got to get cold to appreciate it! ;-p

  • Wow, this is so professional, I suppose you've studied it... this movie is going to be awesome!!!

  • that was a brilliant blog to tell the truth

  • This is one of the best blogs yet! I can't wait to see these vistas against a narrative.

  • Thanks for the reply Rob, at least lip synch wont be a problem using the camera audio..lol

  • Amazing as usual.. I cant wait to see it in full

  • EVERY time he explains what he is doing on his computer I think of THE LORD OF THE RINGS Special Features!!! And then he makes a comment to THE LORD OF THE RINGS Special Features, it's because it's THE BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!

  • wow! Thanks - Lord of the Rings special features is one of the best special features I've ever seen! ...so that's quite a compliment!

  • good work.. but i want to give you a tip.. you should buy or build a rig with which you can move the camera.. because the film might look dull when all shots are moveless

  • true. though I am using techniques to get movement out of some of the shots that warrant it - but at this stage the story actually benefits from static shots. That said it may come in useful later in the story so thanks for the tip! :-)

  • Are you guys shooting a lot more footage like this that is informative for your process as a filmmaker? It would be great for the future DVD to have an even more in depth behind the scenes look.

  • There is loads that isn't making it into the blogs - I could almost do the series again with the cutting room floor! Partly to keep the pace, partly so as not to give too much away so as to spoil the film etc. But yes, a feature length version would require the use of a fair bit of it!

  • I cant wait to see the movie !!!

  • you're so awsome ^^

  • Wow, you really know your stuff! Thanks for the education!!

  • Great Stuff!

How long will the film approximately run for?

And are you going to post it on YouTube or somewhere else?

  • It is scripted at an hour and a half - but it could be an hour and 20ish. I have yet to know where it will be seen - cross that bridge when we come to it! :-)

  • wow

  • Good stuff!

Nice to see - its really progressing!

    Killer!

  • Rob this is looking very good! The time continuity fix was a great tip!

    Good luck

  • Speilberg....watch and learn.

That was another excellent clip. I particularly enjoyed your light continuity tip.

BBC are you watching? We pay our license for quality like this!

  • thxz 4 the tip on continulity

  • Keep up the good work.

  • this is becoming something of a guide to film making! Very useful for me :). Good Work!

  • looking awesome! cheering you on!!! :):):)

  • wow.. not only are you making a film by yourself.. but you are actually teaching stuff to your viewers.. awesome.. tell me more!!

im doing a short myself, from a short story i found on the internet (contacted author, he is ok with it) and this stuff is invaluable. good luck with your film.. im looking forward to seeing it!

  • Thanks - and good luck with your film! It's great to work with other people's stories, I hope it goes smoothly. More useful info on the way. :-)

  • i have to say you are doing an impressive job... every time i watch a new blog update i get more and more excited.

i can not wait to see the end result, it should be amazing.

  • this is great! you giving me new inspiration to start making movies again! btw what software do you use to edit?

  • Good luck with your movies - I hope you enjoy making them. It's a great feeling when you've finished one to see what all that work was about - keep the bug I say! :-)

    ~Editing using Final Cut Pro.

  • You guys are tooo awesome

  • As always, I can't wait to watch the whole film, looks really exciting!

I want to thank you too, because with your making of I'm learning a lot.

  • Just checked my subcriptions and I'm now commetning when this is uploaded a about half an hour ago. Anyway this is looking good. Sounds like there's a big twist in the story. It's fun watching someone make a film by himself because when you get to the end all of us watching can say we've been following you through it.

  • Thanks for the comment - that's the idea - that by the end, anything that I have learnt on the journey, you can learn aswell without having to be so foolish as to climb up a mountain in the snow! :-)

  • amazing... every time i open youtube and see there's a new video, i'm filled with joy...

but it's incredible what can be done with a little knowledge of editing. i only write/act so i can only imagine what directors/editors go through...

  • thanks! Editing is becoming more and more endless in what you can do - once it was the case that if a shot was perfect but the actor moved so as it wouldn't cut with the next shot then you couldn't use it - now you can seperate out elements and shift the movements so that it fits etc! crazy stuff. :-)

  • hhmm.. so when are you expected to finish this film off? and how far have you got yet?

Your a great inspiration! i can't wait to go and see the finished movie (once its made!).

  • I am getting to a third of the way through! (it is taking a while!) Hopefully finished end of summer - but it's impossible to say as I have never bitten off quite a big chew as this one! :-)

  • I love how you change back and forth between informative / educational stuff and journey / diary stuff. Gives the show some nice variety. Not only do you get a glimpse into the production itself, but you also get to connect with the person(s) behind the scenes. Keep it up buddy.

  • Thank you. I'd like these videos to be fun and informative - which is a tricky combination! More useful info to come. :-)

  • You're the only subscription that I have on this particular Youtube account. I love it when you have a new clip up. Can't wait to see the finished film.

  • Thankyou! And I see you have the coin toss scene up on your account - what an incredible piece of cinema that was!! :-)

  • woah its looking amazing, i cant wait to see the whole thing!!!!

  • Great use of your resources, Rob!

The dictionary is for "one reason or another", hey? Sounds like a hint to a plot detail. But I won't press you.

Thanks for sharing your techniques with us. It's great to see so much honesty and integrity about your work process.

    Good luck!

  • Well I cant give away too much else I'd spoil the film :-)

    thanks

  • Rob,are you using any of the location soundtrack or are you recording a wildtrack for use in post ?or both ,by the way what mic and recorder did you get in the end ?

  • I'm trying to get useable dialogue - the rest will be foley and wildtracks.

I'm using a Sennheisser MKH-416 directional mic and a Sennheisser ew112p g2 radio mic - recording straight into camera - as seperate audio would just be too much considering my already heavy limitations!

  • YES!!! i love it when u release new videos! lol.... yet there was only 1 that i didnt liek that u uploaded.. cant remember the one was.. i think the last one before htis

  • Thankyou! That would be the anatomy of a shot video - wasn't my favourite either!! :-)
