I work for Leapfrog and we get so many problems with the Leappad. I grabbed a Innotab (£59 amazon) &it was better, sure it hasnt got a camera & you do need a SD card but the apps for it are a LOT cheaper! Also the lag on the Leappad is appalling.
I love being able to put MP3 & avi on it which makes the Innotab a lot more worthy of its price & being able to use a SD card is a plus. It takes a hammering very well, we get so many returned Leappads just because a child has dropped it.
This is one of the most informative vs review I could find for the Innotab and Leap Pad... I have been in between the two for months now... but I know for sure I am getting my daughter the Innotab for her birthday next month. Thank you!!!
With all vtech products, MAKE SURE to use internet explorer. Firefox does not communicate to install the "Learning navigator" correctly (at least on my pc).
You can plug it in the wall and CHARGE your rechargeable batteries too. Also, my kid LOVES the MP3 player. He is 2-1/2 and loves his Innotab. He also loves using the kickstand to prop it up. We also used up 1 GB of memory on the SD card right away. Expandable memory is worth it. The higher precision touchpad is also well worth it!
for the leappad does it not have any music feature at all? because the description on the website has music and so does this box. does it maybe come with some type of weird music or you just can download music to it?
Good review .. We got our daughter the leap pad for christmas.. Shes really into it.. It is very educational.. Plus IT came with 4 free downloads...the leap pad is very kid friendly.. As for the videos..... Last night we purchased 3 Dora the explorer videos for $7.99. Each video is 30 minutes long.. And we got all 3 of them for $7.99.... Now that's a deal!!!!
Very useful review. Basically confirms that our LeapPad purchase was the right one. Our son went completely bonkers having his own camera (video and still), and will hopefully calm down within a few days. :-) As for the InnoTab's video watching ability, big deal. That's what the TV is for. We have Netflix streaming and a more-than-adequate DVD library that he can watch in the den. At 4-9 years old, we want to maintain control of both what ahd how much he watches anyway.
Cont... Even if used don't have an old camera, getting the vtech or fisher price camera would be better to separate the experience. Kids can be more mobile in their exploring and then take their time viewing and playing with their pics/vids on the tablet w/of getting bored with one or the other. Also, the drawing application response on the vtech is beyond slow. The innotab is smooth and fast. My kids love to draw, watch movies, listen to music and read. Innotab is the clear winner here.
The innotab is a clear winner for me. I'd prefer to have the camera separate for several reasons. One, battery consumption. I have an old sony camera that my kids take 8mp pics and hd video on. It's a sturdy camera and the kids are careful with it. It also has flash, so they aren't limited to terrible pics. No one else has mentioned in reviews the RESOLUTION of the leappad camera. Vga quality, remember our first cell phone cameras? To me, skimping in other areas to fit in a subpar camera is bad.
How to you upload youtube videos to the InnoTab, I have searched all over the internet to find how it's done?? Thank for the Review and it was very helpful!
Try, Freemake Video converter and do the following: Deselect the adware during setup. Select your video(s) and pick AVI. Make a custom profile by selecting "+" under the preset. Enter Innotab for the Title. Set your Frame Size to Custom and enter 480x272, Leave adjustment default. Codec select XVID, 15FPS frame rate, Bitrate leave default. Audio codec select PCM, Mono Channels, Sample Rate 22050 and off you go! :)
Very informative, thank you....still hard decision, son loves to take pictures but also watch movies, iPad does it all but not durable enough and way too expensive
The landscape has changed since we purchased a LeapPad couple of months ago. Should have included 7" android tablets into the mix, because I think it will outclass both kid tablets in terms of versatility and education value. At $20+ per game, the cost of owning a LeapPad goes up quickly. Nowadays, you can get a refurbished Nook Color from Barnes & Noble for $145 = (LeapPad + 2 games). Easy to turn that device into an android tablet. Tones of how-to info available online.
Buying the SD card will not make these the same price as she eluded to in the video. To upgrade to only 2GB with the SD card will cost you $2-3. Certainly not a $20 difference. A quick Google search showed a 16GB SD card (which is the max you can install) for $13. A little misleading in an otherwise great review. Just FYI.
WOW - I thought the camera would be huge, but most, MOST, not all, children will grow bored with it. The MP3 is but and kind of cool, depending on the kid, but I think the camera vs mp3 negate each other. The ability to play non proprietary videos kills leap pad though.
This was a great video! I orders two innotabs for my boys and I'd just like to add that while the Innotab doesn't have a built in camera vtech does make a camera that is comparable with the Innotab so for a little more you can have the best of both worlds and your kid will have their very own camera.
LOL this is the best review that I seen so far. so we have 3 leappads and we leaped before we really researched so now we just bought Innotabs and now selling leappads crazy I know hope this answer helps others
You have helped me so much. I didn't work fast enough to get the leappad before they sold out nationwide (and are now being sold on ebay for $250+). I am so happy that I didn't now. Although the leappad is great, the Innotab has the features that I am looking for!
And for anyone straddling the line, our child has the leapster explorer with the camera attachment....she is correct - the pictures are low res and you have to be patient because of the delay in timing. Our 4 yo child loves the art studio more than the camera, which is much better on the Innotab. :)
This is an awesome review! This helped me soo much. I was hands down leap-pad UNTIL I watched your review. I think the Innotab is a much more innovative pad just because it caters to the buyer to be able to personalize with music and videos - plus the games and apps are much more affordable for the average family. Thank you so much - I have been scowering the youtube for a review that broke it down, so glad I found you! :)
Thank you so much for this review!! LOVE how detailed and objective you are in your reviews! In my opinion, it seems that the Innotab is more suitable for entertainment purposes and probably will appeal to a child that's a little older more so than the LeapPad. However, I also feel that the LeapPad will grow with a child a bit more and could appeal to the younger children. Thanks again for such a great comparison!!
You are a life saver...this was a major debate between my husband and I and you cleared everything up and now I know what to buy my daughter for Christmas...thank you! thank you! thank you!
the leap frog catriges is $27 .00 CAN at toys R us, And leap frog is 129.00 at toys R us too. I think Im going to go for Leap frog. I like the video camara idea, Thanks Hollie!

We bought the Inotab, and also bought the vtec camera that plugs into your Inotab. I would rather have the two features seperately.

@bjcastle215 The Innotab just takes regular SD cards which you can pick up super cheap on sale. $5-$30 depending on how much memory.
