  • Alexander was truly Mind over matter !!!

  • ALEXANDER!!! greatest man in history of mankind

  • 5:23 Seen enough hentai to... well you know.

  • Alexander was a lion of a man, there hasnt been anyone with such ambition before or since

  • There is nothing great about a tyrant who burns and loots a cradle of civilization such as the Persian capitol of Persepolis. A colonizer, thief and tyrant. Cyrus wrote the first declaration of human rights allowing his subjects to practice their religion freely, speaking their own languages. Right now, nobody knows about him. His name appears in Torah

  • @mehramir27 dude the persians went against greece and made many wars best known march against sparta 300 etc so plzzzz plzzzz watch waht u are saying

  • @mehramir27 I agree completely...CYRUS was a man wayyy ahead of his era!

  • @mehramir27 Cyrus the great was a qonquerer just like Alexander. How to you think the persian empire came into existence. Through many brutal battles

  • The song is hot too lol

Ima iTunes this shit!!! I WANT IT

  • the greatest Greek

  • Such a great Macedonian leader ... interlectual, fearist, wise, all round the greatist bloke revolutionist coqncor the world has herd ov

  • Alexander may have been a magnificent soldier, but he was a self-worshiping tyrant who abused his own men.

  • On an ancient map of Sarmatia, Alexanders Alans inhabited the north. he himself said he was a Subar ( Gate person ), and of Subars there were 4 races. This explains why you all claim Alexander. He referred to himself as Subar, from Hatti to northern Scythia, to Urartu and Sumir, this was his land. I am Hun Scythian and I can vouch that greeks have tried to Subjugate us form day one, to this day they say we bowed to greek gods. The truth is we were about the Sumerian pantheon. We are related.

  • If the world is not big enough for him,how can he ( Alexander The Great ) endure the the narrow box ( The Coffin ).

  • @SithSereyPheap1 he cant endure the narrow box thats why his name will live on forever, his name will never be forgotton as long as humans are alive, now thats saying something

  • Thank you for uploading this.

  • and also when you reach the greatest heights, places where noone else has ever been before, the tendency is to push it to the absolute limit and see how far you can go!!! this is what drove alexander to keep going, cause no greek had ever gone that far before, only legendary heros from greek mythology had ever gone to india, HERCULES, DYONISIS, alexander wanted to achieve immortality and live forever thru his deeds, and ya know what? HE DID IT! WE STILL SPEAK HIS NAME, SO HE LIVES ON!!!

  • ALEXANDER though of himself as a modern ACHILLES, achilles is given a choice in the trojan war, stay home and live a quiet, long BUT insignificant life, or go to TROY and die young BUT achieve everlasting fame and glory, and of course he chose to die young but glorious and have his name spoken thru the ages, its THE ONLY WAY of achieving immortality! it was the ancient greek ideal of how to live your life!! alexander was taught this as a child, THIS IS WHAT TRULY MOTIVATED HIM!!

  • what motivated alexander was and is the same thing that motivates men today, his want and need for his ego, to be written into the histories, and by this, ACHIEVE IMMORTALTY!!! we are all mortal, from the humble artisan to the greatest king, but the only way to live forever, and alexander knew this, was to achieve ever lasting fame Thru your deeds and actions!! the greeks had a saying, SPEAK MY NAME AND I SHALL LIVE!!! and alexanders ego drove him to reach this point, AND HE WAS RIGHT!!

  • Thank you for posting this wonderful documentary about Alexander the Great! I've watched it multiple times and I've learned so much more about Alexander than I ever knew before. Michael Wood documentaries are all wonderful and this is one of the very best.

  • The greatest Greek of all time!

  • what is that beatnik persian poetry?

  • @SuperAlienkiller i really hope not lol

  • i love facts

  • macedonia is greek by historical evidence....

  • Slept with Snakes??...... like Reptilian Aliens maybe??

  • I am a hellenist and the gods are real and still worshiped to this day! Hail the olympians

  • His empire crumbled right when he died. His empire building was a gigantic failure. Great general, my favorite is Hannibal.

  • okay...so where's the tree?

  • It seems there are ten FYROMians wannabe Macedonians who saw this video(10 dislikes). They were hurted by the truth.

  • Thank you enough Mr Michael Wood and your crew members also BBC channel for the masterpiece you created to show us the true story of ALEXANDER THE GREAT!!

    Greetings from Greece!!

  • RedHead531

His motivation was to become better than his father who created the kingdom in which he, Alexander the Great, would one day rule.

  • Alexander the great was prophesy in the book of Daniel 8-5

  • ALEXANDER THE GREAT WAS BORN HERE IN MACEDONIA IN NORTHERN GREECE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HE IS GREEK!!!!!HE IS GREEK!!!HE IS GREEK!!!!

  • Being Afghan myself normally I would feel belittled that someone conquered the country Im from, but I would surrender to a King like Alexander any day, I would have loved to live under his rule.

    Zindadabod Pacha Sikandar.

  • @Afgsusan1 and ashok , chandragupt and sikhs too!!

  • @Afgsusan1 YEP pedophilia and leftist tyranny yayyy!

  • Si- kan- der! Si- kan- der! Si- kan- der!

  • This is a fantastic documentary. Michael Wood presents it in a very informative and intertaining way but there is a segment or two missing. I did find it on other web sites but it is in Greek so I could not tell what was being said.

  • i understand why Iranians dislike Alexander, burning Iranian palaces, the mass marriage but what about what the Persians did to the Greeks...?

  • @theprodigy1600 the victors get to write the history but the losers get to whine for all time

  • @MachuPichuNT

    i think not...d.khan comes 1600 years later

  • ghalat kardi keh iraniha beh bachehahson migan boro bekhab va garnah alexander toro migireh ,in kozavalat maleh dideh tangeh shargh shenasaneh uropaei hast.

  • we are The Unconquerable even for you Alexander .you were great but not big enough for Afghanistan.............peace for Afghanistan peace for the world

  • @TheNazifa Yeah, but he conquered afghanistan. Kabul, Kandhar, etc. were all founded by him.

  • @UserUK201 no man he didt jst read history man

  • @TheNazifa I have, I've read all about him. It was his longest and hardest campaign, but he conquered Afghanistan.

  • Alexander was a great man, but I wonder what truly motivated him in his quest to conquer the world.

  • @RedHead531 Revange..

  • @RedHead531 Revenge from the persian

  • @RedHead531 It was the prospect of infinite minge

  • @RedHead531 well,Alexander inherted Aristoteles thirst to explore the unexplored.at first,it was an effort to free greek cities from the persian empire and take them back.but i think his true motive was to unify the world and free the opressed people(as he did in asia).he clearly believe that all people are equal in an age where humanitarism didnt even exist as a term and maybe he wanted to see that come true.

  • @spyrosw9 lol, sry but that's a load of bull. Alexander read cyropedia when he was young, which was the teachings of Cyrus The Great, founder of the persian empire. Cyrus was the first person in all history to create human rights (no slavery, freedom of religion, emancipation). Persepolis (most expensive palace ever built, was built by men and women who were all paid for. He rescued 70,000 jews and built their temple in jerusalem. In ancient persia, men and women were EQUAL, more even than now.

  • @CyrusThe3rd Cyropedia is considered by academia as mainly a fictional account of Cyrus the Great. All agree that Alexander the Great's main influence and his lifetime hero was a figure in Homer's "The Iliad" Achilles, who he aspired to emulate. Just stating facts nothing else. cheers

  • @spyrosw9 `free the opressed ppl in asia`. Incorrect in so many ways. Iran is opressed now, but don´t mistake ancient persia with ayatollah´s opression of iranian citizens. If alexander never conquered persia, christianism and islam would never of existed in the first place. Whatever you want to believe, if there was an achaemenid government, world would´ve been a better place.

  • @RedHead531 meglomania.........

  • @RedHead531 Isn't it obvious? Alexander wanted to avenge the Persian invasions of Greece during the time of Xerxes and Darius I.

  • @RedHead531 He wanted to aprove to his father that he is a great man too by continuing his dream. The way he grow up makes him so diferend from his father.

  • @RedHead531 Simply because he could not conquer his own ambition to conquer the world.

  • @RedHead531 I think that I can answer this question, with a 100% accuracy:

    Alexander was

    1) a man - naturally eager for power and fear of death by (historical) oblivion

    2) a Greek - taught in Greek Classical history and their legends of old, which he admired/wanted to surpass

    3) an idealist - seeking to restore former Greek glory/colonies and to spread Greek culture

this combination of facts in his timeframe and the bravery of his actions/men, resulted in his title: O MEGAS ALEXANDROS

  • @antoniostarlizos I agree,I just would say that he was a man of his time .

  • @RedHead531 I have studied Alexanders Astrology (Vedic) in detail. There were many influences upon him and he was karmicly destined for great power, wealth and fame. Emotionally I would say that he was motivated by his mother.

  • @RedHead531 immortality

  • WHats the song at 3.40? Anywhere I can listen to that completely? I love it.

  • Alexander's father was GREEK, Alexander's mother's name was OLYMPIAS, Alexander was born in Pellas, which is in GREECE. The Slav-Gypsy scum that call themselves 'Macedonians' have NO connection with the ancient Macedonia or Alexander.

  • @TheBaphomet777 Yeah fuck those gypsys.

  • i sense a lot of historical and cultural difficulties here.

I would like to say simply one thing. WE CALL HIM SIKANDER IN INDIA . HE OR HIS ARMY GAVE ME MY BLUE GREY EYES.

  • So please tell me when did the slavs move into Macedonia or near. You have the history of Slavs. Not Macedonian Hellenic Greeks.

  • "Turn him to any cause of policy,

The Gordian Knot of it he will unloose,

    Familiar as his garter"

  • A great video. Yes, Alexander was Hellenic Greek. All native Macedonians are Hellenic Greek.

  • Klubali khan or ghengis khan? did they conquer more land?

  • Wow the Persians and Greeks look a lot alike. Too bad they don't make movies about the Greeks using real Greeks. They look better with their natural brown hair, brown eyes, and olive skin than the nordic variant on the screen.

  • Informative video. Thank you!

  • @oilgasfish1

Many FYROMians claim that Alexander was a Slav which is a BS just like their fake national identity so dont act smart if u are unaware of the facts. FYROMians are Slavs and have ni relation to the ancient Macedonians. Ancient Macedonians were Greeks and the descent of their royal house was from Argos (Southern Greece) thus the royal house was called ARGEAD!

  • Alexander was only outdone by two other nations throughout history. His empire was the third largest ever, behind Mongolia in second and Britain in first. He was the inspiration for many successful conquerors throughout history such as Hannibal, Caesar, Napoleon and Hitler.

  • @englishfrenchgerman Persia was bigger too.

  • @mounten213 Macedonia was a Hellenistic Kingdom... that would be why the era after his death was called... the Hellenistic Era.

  • alexander was not strong

    dariush 3 was weak

  • @mt7taba lol what? Alexander was a very powerful king. Look at how he put down the revolts of the Greeks and conquered the Persian Empire. There were plenty of generals that would have faltered where Alexander conquered whether Darius III was weak or not.

  • @Alexandros1294 alexander inherited everything from his father philip. His father conquered greece and unified it with macedonia he ghathered an army of 75000.the proof for what i said is that he conquered the great persian empire of dariush 3 with that 75000 in few years but when he attacked india he could hardly defeat aspasioi and assakena who had small armies and empires and he could not even defeat porus

  • @mt7taba You're wrong. During the conquest of the Persian Empire, Alexander's numbers were never more than 50,000. Alexander also DID defeat Porus. He never lost a battle in his life. However, the victories against the Indians were hard fought and they were the first REAL challenge that the Macedonian army faced since conquering the other Greeks.

  • @Alexandros1294 this defeats gave rise to a revolt in his army because they feared more defeats and alexander was convinced by his generals that he could not conquere india so he ended his campaign with very liitle conquest(his main aim was to conquere entire india like he did with persia)So if his conquest of persia was not because of dariush 3s weakness why he could not conquere india?

  • @mt7taba His army had been fighting for 12 years straight, of course they wouldn't have their usual vigor for war in India. He needed new and fresh troops. Then he could have done it.

  • @Alexandros1294 man you believe he was strong i dont you have your reasons i have my own reasons if we continue to argue about this its never going to end.

  • @mt7taba population, the fact they had to first get through persia, and far from home and famine.

  • Mounten213: The simple way to end the debate of whether he was Greek or a "slav" is to consider this.... The Macedonians were invited to participate in the ancient Olympics and ONLY Greeks were permitted to participate...nobody else. That's the end of the lesson...

  • @ Alexanderthegreat2 μην ασχολησε φιλε μου με τον σκοπιανο.αφησε τον να κανει ονειρα.

  • Chinggis Khan conquered more then Aleksandar but Aleksandar conquered and give peace and he socialized the people and build new cities.unlike he destroy cities and kill many ppl.

  • @astr0tugi More than twice the size of Alexander's empire. But that being said after Chinggis Khan died soon after so did his empire along with its influence. Alexander's empire lead to the spread of Hellenism which ultimately changed the world forever. That being said both were amazing men whomever you think is greater depends on whether you judge them based on the size of their empire or their total influence on history. That is a question I leave up to you.

  • I refuse to believe these great armies,my very heros, were fudge packers.I believe these societies were just sexual, not gay.Men like women....the percentage of gays was as low then as it is now.Penis statues were everywhere, not for men to stroke, but as a symbol of power & fertility. The armies did sleep together. They're called barracks.Doesn't mean orgies. We hear the gay tales, because they were rare, not common. Please,i don't want a gay hero.

  • A must see for any Alexander fan. Excellent series.

  • Glorious HELLENIC EMPIRE

  • Thanks for posting - good to see and hear Michael Wood again

  • you know Alexander was a amazing leader and genius warrior when thousands of years later people still fear him.

  • @xXxMantronxXx he was also a homosexual

  • @alilapointe1 i know i try not to think about that

  • Terrific post. Thank you. But what's with those Indian traditions of talking trees and roped monkeys - not cool.

  • pathetic loser iranian get over it..... he is dead already

  • The greatest Greek hero of all time, from the glorious macedonian hellinic kingdom

  • Thanks for putting this up, and I had to get the number of comments off the unlucky 111!

  • stop it who are you trying to bullshit, you are trying to show that alexander did not beat the persians, your argument falls when you look at all the battles he won again and again and again.

  • exceptional series !!!

    kudos, professor M. Wood !!!

  • By "Macedonian" do you mean A bulgarina speaking Slav like yourself who's race came into europe 1000 years after he died....Or a GREEK from the GREEK state of Macedon...i think you know, just watch the video Bulgarian

  • No not all but most.

and how is what i said racist?

  • @PavlosDionysus do you see how many details you can find about alexander....and about this Slavs that come 1000 year after we cannot find single batle of who they kill..or you think this people that was fight great persia just run away in front slavens..?..no batle no liders names... no nothing in data of slavens over-populating balkan and kiling "old nations"..?

  • "go to sleep or Alexander will get you" haha I love it..They must really hate Greeks over ther

  • @brtaneja2000 He said leyend is told. So you can start by explaning to them what a leyend is.

  • /watch?v=Q36tSlVBlvU

National Geographic maps of the Balkans states 1915 - 2006.

FYROM: HOW A LIE BECOME TRUE

  • How do they in Iran call Alexander the Great? I don't understand the word Michael Wood uses.

  • Sikander

    Pronounced: See-kan-durr

    same for most Asian countries

  • @samrankFTW: Thanks, but I mean the part on 0:58 where Micheal Wood narrates: "... But here in Iran, they call him "Alexander the..."" Thanks.

  • oh, they call him Alexander the accursed he says.

  • Thanks a lot!!

  • np bro

  • Cyrus was killed by the scytians... and Alexander fought by them and won.

    Greetings

  • Yes, but Cyrus the Great managed to rule his empire for 30 years while Alexander did not live to rule his empire at all.

Furthermore Cyrus's empire lasted 300 years while Alexander's empire was divided in to 3 parts soon after his death !

  • was alexander a blond boy of had he dark hair on pictures he had both than blond and dark

  • That's why I'm proud of my name, Alexander.

  • living on the achivements of others??

  • you do know that Alexander was bisexual right? so that means not only did he like to poke women he also loved to drill men. especially their ass*s.

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • im pretty sure the movie Alexander was sued for portraying him as bisexual, if im wrong then at the time there was nothing wrong with that many greeks were that way, including the women

  • I don't know if it was sued but the greeks were pissed of as hell and the movie does not do him justice anyway they left out so much

  • Alexander, you will shine like a star through the ages...

  • Alexander the Great would have defeated anyone. That's why his story still fascinates us. He was truly great.

  • Athenians,Macedonians,Spartans,Thessalonians brave Greeks all.The Greeks have conquered, have been conquered and we are still here today 5000yrs later,we have been ruthless and at the same time kindhearted.I am honoured of my ancestors.

MACEDONIA WAS,IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE GREEK

  • Alexander was okay, i don't have anything against homosexsuels and for that on im myself are Bi but i'm making a school assangment about him and my title is "Alexander the Homosexsuel" not too piss him off but too tell in a funnt way how he was. (don't hate me for it my teacher sayd that i should try too make it sound fun) but then again is someone here knowing where i could find some good homepages or other about him? please

  • alexander wouldve never beaten cyrus the great

  • Correct , he defeated Darius 111 becuase he was a very weak king. He would not have defeated Cyrus or Darius 1.

  • Alexander the Great was just that A GREAT!. His soldiers loved him, the people whe so called conquered loved him. They all respected him. Dont forget this was thousands of years ago. He didnt conquer to steal but to impose civlisation and righteneous. Common the Man had spirit to conquer all the lands he did, who esle could have done that without cars, plances, tanks, guns etc?. Also at that young age?. Am by the way Pakistani with Macedonian ancestry who lives in Jhelum!. My surname is Gurkar.

  • Talking tree? looooool. Yeah right and am the fairy God Mother!. lol. Just cuz Alexander the Great didnt conquer all of India the indians make up something like the tree etc. Alexander had no use to go on. He had done whatever he wanted to in the East. There is no tree, no Prophecies. Of course he will be remembered if anyone conquered Persia, Greece, Egypt etc. But Alexander was a good man who only imposed civlisation to people and rightenous!.

  • domosthenes was a great orator who wanted to protect the athenian democracy& freedom from the barbaric mecedonians some said that domesthenes was receiving bribe from persians to speak against the united hellinistic policy but that is mere speculation that has no meaning.Domesthenes was a person who loved the athenian feeling of democracy and wanted to protect it.

  • Demosthenis downtalked Philip and called him barbarian not because Philip was not Greek but because his aspiration to unite all Greek states under him threatened Demostenis' interests. Demosthenis called barbarians all his political rivals, like the Athenian orator Aristogeiton.

  • what is the name of the song???

  • Interesting videos!

    Ulf Sawert

  • I already watched this 2 times in the past year...now..ONCE AGAIN!!..its just great.

  • and this will be my 4th time :o)

    exceptional series, truly !

  • Because of you, now I have to watch this video.

  • fantastic documentary, can't wait to finish it !

  • ha ha ha ... bien dit;

go to bed or Alexander will get you!

  • Back then homosexuality was quite common, infact in Sparta all men were expected to have sexual relationships with boys

  • And you were there holding the lantern & inspecting the Spartan penile size...

  • You should tell that to Xenophon, who spent years among the Spartans and wrote in his treatise on Spartan constitution that sexual relationships with boys were forbidden by law just like incest.

  • Give it up if you haven't studied the history...then why even comment?

Read Xenophon, and the laws of Sparta.

  • @begley321 There's a difference between a homosexual bond and a homosocial/pedophilic bond. Practitioners of the former prefer to have sex with other men exclusively while in the latter, a sexual relationship is simply a component (not necessarily romantic and not necessarily present) that underlies the general tutelage that older men provide for younger men. There's no need to make the sensational claim that all Spartans were homosexuals.

  • Alexander defeated the Persians because he was a better tactician and his army was better trained and better armed.

Both the Macedonians/Greeks and the Persians pillaged and burned. That's what armies did back in those days.

People stop bringing the Slavs into this period. They don't arrive in Greece until much later around 6th century when they start invading the Byzantine/Roman empire.

  • thewongaddress

    ""Both" the Macedonians/Greeks"

should be The Macedonians and the rest of the Greeks...better yet the rest of the Hellenes.

The Macedonians were and are Greeks.

  • Aegialeus

Yes..you're right. I agree. Both the same. Just a slip of the old grammar. I believe the southern Greeks looked down at the Macedonians calling them "those backward country Greeks".

  • Demosthenes comment, calling Phillip a Barbarian was political rhetoric to discourage "Athenians" to unite with the "Macedonians" and Phillip. He also trash talked Spartans.

One ancient Greek in his time was quoted as saying Demosthenes was receiving bribes from the Persians to deter a United Hellene campaign into the Persian empire. I have not seen the translation nor the original text myself, and yet!!!?

And this is the bases for FYROMians (Vardaskians) claim that Alexander was not Hellene.

  • sardis was mainly inhabited by Greeks (ionian greeks) along with other natives of the area, what did you want them to do, to shake off Persian IMPERIALISM and domination, idiot ?

the only sickening and misleading here is being undertaken by some of you fascist youtube persians, attempting to portray the entire Persian empire -that stretched from afghanistan to turkey- as your own native land !

LOL, what uninformed nazis !!! dont be mad, perse :)
