All of these people who think they are being progressive and drawing blanket conclusions about how bad spanking is are totally off base. Spanking is not an approach that works for every child but some children desperately need it. I was one of those that really feared being spanked and it kept me in line more than any other form of discipline. My child is a lot like me and so i treat him that way. I try not to do it often but when I am out of options it does the trick.
Just a side note: Does anyone have a right to say who beats their wives in their own homes? The answer will be no different to kids ;-) We all have a right to know whether violence goes on behind closed doors, because sooner or later it will start affecting others, but this is about real abuse, not light spanking... Still, why spank when you could learn to communicate! Take the time to teach your child, remember, no god will come down and wipe our backsides for us, teach and we will learn!
You can see by research positive reinforcement outdoes negative in every form, ergo spanking is totally useless. The ladies said it well, why would you teach a child that its bad to hit out by hitting the child! Nonsensical, but 99% of parents teach kids threats (do this or you'll get no supper for example, its still blackmail) so their'll always be issues really!
my mom physically abused me and my little brother. DCFS investigated ON THEIR OWN because in school I was showing signs of an abused child. My mom called it spanking. It was abuse, and it was out of anger. She also had a chemical imbalance and possibly ADHD. My dad spanked us but not out of anger and it wasn't abuse. me and him are close. But because there are phsycos out there like my mom who will use it as an execuse to beat children, it should come to an end, I still hv healt prblms due 2 it.

Your child has no obligation to do as you say, or even like you. If your only way to deal with that is through psychological or physical violence, you don't deserve to be a mother.
I wish you had linked the study so we could actually see it. This study is likely correlational research, so you can't draw any kind of causal conclusion from it. Perhaps it is discipline in general. Or perhaps parents who physically discipline are likely to show other behaviors, like being less laissez-faire with their children. In fact, there's a whole host of third variables that could be going on here and little reason to think spanking is directly affecting these outcomes.
My friend who is almost 16 is still spanked almost everyday for minor reasons........

I was spanked and it lead to other things
My Dad used to pull my hair and then he
spanked me for reasons I can't remember.
He has some anger issues because he has a sleep disorder.
He moved on from spanking to shaking me around, banging me against walls, and punching me in the head one time.
It could have been a lot worse, but it was still bad.
He started out with semi-normal discipline, but then he got kind of abusive.
I say kind of because other kids have it worse.
