  • I just have one doubt... which tools do you use to ink your drawings digitally? I really have a lot of problems whit that.

  • Mr. Dobson is that the pillows i love that band! there so awesome

  • wow...you make it look so good and so simple....BTW love ur work just got 1 of ur books! ^^

  • So how long does a comic strip like this usually take? And great work btw I love your comics. :D

  • Hi there, I actually love your cartoons and I definitely understand the jokes etc.. I would love to buy a comic of yours sometime. I come from Germany and Mangas much more popular than American Comics. Having many people around, who talk about Yaoi, right-to-left-reading and so on, I get annoyed to once in a while because many believe, it's the only acceptable modern art out there. It is always nice to see somebody that draws in a refreshing different and humorous way... Keep the work up. :)

  • Honestly, when I was 9, I read the first "Kingom Hearts" because everyone said it was so cool. I thought it was crap that was lucidly strung together and made no sense.

5 years later, I realized I had read the f*cking thing backwards.

  • I know that this is going to sound silly, but I don't think I can read anything other than manga. For some crazy reason, my brain simply refuses to retain large amounts of information when I read passively (left to right). Reading from right to left is a more active way to read for me, being the opposite of what I learned growing up, and not only do I retain the story but I read it 100% faster. An isolated case, perhaps.

Meanwhile, Game of Thrones is collecting dust beside me.

  • @AriLaiSuki So..every artist who doesn't just put his art on dA is a sellout. That means every artist befor the lat 90's was a sellout. Wow...all art is made by sellouts except for the ones made by 14 year olds on SheezyArt.....tha's great for aspiring artists to know. Don't make money for doing what you love.

  • Hey. I just wanted to say that you are amazing at illustration, and it seems cool that you have a degree in which I'm aiming for. You are inspirational to me, and I certainly hope you make more of your comics, because even when they're funny, they hold truth and a slice of reality. I like how you consider the world's point of view, and make fun of it, because to me, making fun of a world in which is foolish, stupid, and redundant is VERY funny. But yea. Keep it up, man! Love your art and work!

  • It's funny how this guy can't take any constructive criticism whatsoever.

  • @kkaayynniinnee When I get some that's actually useful, I'll take it. Thus far I haven't gotten any.

  • this is cool to see you doing this in front of me, sort of. I have watched some of your livestreams, but never speed up and detailed like this

  • One thing...

Even mangas don't NEED to be read from right to left. It's just tradition to do that, but it's not really a rule. If a "manga-ka" did his manga from left to right, it wouldn't be blasphemy to all the manga gods. I'm sure, in the future, more and more manga will be read from left to right.

  • watching this made me happy XD I've always loved watching artists and cartoonists post speed-drawings of their art/comics.

  • FREAKING WEEABOOS...

    *rage*

  • How long did it take you to color it? D: (Not sketch or lineart, but JUST color)

It takes me like, TWO DAYS.

  • how do you record?

  • Honestly, this could be really stupid to ask, and open a whole 'nother can of worms, but I'll ask, What is your opinion then on manga that comes from Japan being published in right to left when it comes to America (or anywhere for that matter)? And what if they published Batman in left to right in Japan, does the same thing still apply? Is there an Asian version of you somewhere saying the same thing? Lastly, I like your comics, they are funny, and you're a great artist/cartoonist

  • @LinkSlayer64 See, that makes sense... because that's how their culture reads, so it make sense to keep it that way. Since so many people are violently against "flipping" then I say Batman should be published in japan as left to right because that's how WE read. See how it works?

  • This is so cool :)

  • song is from FLCL? I KNEW IT.

Loved this series BTW. Its really great.

  • What do u use to color the background?

  • The shading part at 01:15 is great!

  • Isn't this soundtrack from FLCL? XD awesome vid by the way

  • Lol, it's funny that people are all: "BAW! Manga is booming! Right to left is a smart move to market in America!" when in reality, the manga boom is over and OEL manga is a dying breed. Tokyopop is in mega trouble as is Del Ray and they're trying to pump up omnibus volumes in an attempt just to finish a series. Seriously, Tom's advice is valid; in the world of marketing, you want to hit your target audience the best you can.

  • As a fellow illustrator, I strongly encourage using keyboard shortcuts.

You have NO idea how much it lessens the interruption and time to do a painting.

  • What programs and tools do you use (type of markers,editing,recorder....)

  • I don't know why but I find it hilarious that you don't use keyboard shortcuts...

I'm such a derranged child xD

But I can see this girls point, Manga is supposed to be Japanese, so it's supposed to be right to left :/

  • If people really want tp make universal stuff. Make the comics go straight down.

  • Yeah.. Don't pretend you're japanese people, you just make yourselves look retarded.

  • I'm loving the series..keep up the good work and don't move to japan!

  • If you don't mind my correcting you, it should be, "You're" instead of "Your" in the title of the video. ^^

  • Is that The Pillows I hear? 8D

  • Wrong "your" there :P. I love this comic and I agree!

  • How do you do the fill? I noticed some sort of selection tool... I just got Photoshop but I'm not sure how to fill without the gradient of the ink lines staying white.

... for that matter, what do you do to ink your comics?

  • @superfox1080 I scan my artwork in pure B/W lineart mode. This means that there's only 2 colors, black and white, without any of that grey gradient getting in the way. That allows me to use the fill bucket (located under the gradient tool) to fill in large areas with color. If you can't scan in lineart mode, you can always reduce your scans to pure B/W by using the "Threshold" option under the image menu.

  • @TomPreston6 I actually have a question related to Superfox's there, I use photoshop as well, trying to improve myself in my own art, yet with the fill bucket, it doesnt just fill in the area boxed in by lines, it fills all the areas with that exact same colors. Its CS4 so I dont know if thats just how they made it or you can change it.

  • @Nicochara You need to check the box labeled "Contiguous".

  • With the shading, did you just use a low opacity of black?

  • @Tejina91 sort of. I used 100% intense black but then reduced the layer's opacity to 40%.

  • How long did this actually take you? Not the sketching process but the coloring. Because thats just amazing! Its strange to watch and see how simple your picture actually is but it pops out so well the simplicity is beautiful!

  • Question. When you were shading, What tool did you use?

  • @butterscotchbuddy the pencil tool

  • @TomPreston6

    Oh I see. Thank you!

  • CUTE!!!!

  • @FreezingCharlatan what was your opinion about? (just for curiosity's sake lol)

    :)

  • @mummymetaller If the user is who I think they are, they posted a critique which was fairly negative. I allowed it on the grounds that all critiques are welcome. But soon after a flame war erupted between their opinion, my opinion, and hundreds of other users too. It became clear that keeping the critique up wasn't going to help anybody, so I removed it.

  • @TomPreston6 Aaah I see.

  • Very cool.

What program do you use to record yourself drawing like that?

  • @FantasyandJesus101 Quicktime.

  • Christ almighty; people will find anything to flame each other about nowadays on youtube. It's just a matter of opinion; people! Personally; I agree with Tom, but that's just my opinion. If it's an online comic and it's in your culture to write from right to left; that's understandable... But doing it in a comic where the audience is primarily left to right readers... It just makes the reading experience awkward to those who are not accustomed to it. Again; just an opinion, chill out guys :/

  • 1, 2, 3, 4, I detect a flame war.

  • The subtle irony of this is that that sounds like a Japanese song X3 Or is it irony? Somehow I don't think that's the right word...

  • @KwartzKitten it's ironic.

  • @TomPreston6 Well okay then.

  • I hear FLCL, and i like it

  • I think people are missing the point of this entire thing. If you go to Japan are you not expected to do things there way? You can't do something to entertain folks then expect them to understand a thing that is not in their culture. Why not just have a cartoon in French aired on NickToons with no subtitles? Sure, not everyone understands it but hey! It's ART! I think pulling the "IT'S ART" card is worse then anything. It's a stupid excuse ESPECIALLY for artists who work to entertain others.

  • (: This was interesting to watch. I thought the comic was amusing. Not sure why everyone else is making such a big deal out of it.

  • I have a bone to pick with you. It's not about the message though, it's your grammar. I make no claims to being any sort of expert, but I think you mean the title to be, "So You'RE a Cartoonist", and the 'a' in lowercase, words like "a", "the", "an" don't get capitalized in a title.

    Just sayin'. Ta!

  • This whole conversation with you only served to prove to me that you are a tasteless ignorant douche bag; since you keep throw out the "American culture" card, I suggest going out and finding what is means to be really American instead of drawing comics.

    <3

  • @AriLaiSuki I think that you're COMPLETELY missing the point. If you don't like the "American" card then fine. I'll throw out the ENGLAND card. Or the FRENCH card. Or the MEXICAN card. Because ALL THOSE CULTURES READ LEFT TO RIGHT. This isn't rocket science. This isn't something that needs to be nitpicked and dissected. It's simple logic. You make a story in a culture that reads a certain way, you should probably write the story the way your culture is taught to read it. Simple as that.

  • @DoomedStrawberry You're right. I'm just trying to give some advice as someone who's worked in the field. It's like an art teacher trying to teach their students to draw from life and getting in return nothing but Anime and Manga art. That's not what the assignment was and the students aren't "learning" anything by not studying properly.

  • @TomPreston6 People are clearly overreacting to the comic, when all you were doing was trying to be helpful and give advice from your own experience. They should clearly try to understand what you were actually saying more rather than just jumping straight in blindly and insulting you. But hey, that's just my two cents.

  • Tom Preston isn't a Manga-ka? Nani?!

  • just tell them that they can do it Korean style. :3

(they... read left to right as well.)

  • Also someone who was raised in a country, example being the USA where you read "left to right" yet they're artist enough to pull off "right to left" comics is a great feat when thought about. As an artist yourself I would think you could find some respect for that. But guess not.

  • @AriLaiSuki But that's my point. I don't think they DO "pull it off" effectively and I think trying to write counter-intuitive to how they're grown up learning to read just for the sake of "authenticity" (which isn't even really authentic since they're not Japanese living in japan making manga) is a silly and pointless endeavor... ESPECIALLY if you want to become famous and sell your work someday.

  • @TomPreston6 You don't seem to realize there are artists in Japan, Korea, Taiwan etc that make comics "Left to right" also. It's all about style and skill, and if someone can go against the norm they have been thought, then kudos to them. The fact that you down on someone for doing something you don't agree with, despite maybe they have some really good skill, makes you even less of an artist yourself. It's not about the arrangement, it's how the artist pulls off the story.

  • @AriLaiSuki Those people write that way because it's part of their culture to do so. It's not "noble" of an American to pretend to be from another country and mimic a writing style which will ultimately leave their work pretty niche in their own country. I'm speaking on a purely professional level and in no way am I saying you can't make comics read right to left if you so desire.

  • @TomPreston6 "It's not "noble" of an American to pretend to be from another country and mimic a writing style which will ultimately leave their work pretty niche in their own country. "

Oh yes, you sir are a right noble American. Look up your own history, we founded ourself off of ideas from other cultures. The USA IS a diverse culture. Where as other Cultures mimic the USA in some instances.

    you're entire attitude speaks opposite of a professional.Professionals don't bash other's pursuits.

  • @AriLaiSuki I'm not trying to bash people's pursuits, I'm trying to give REALISTIC ADVICE. I never said you CAN'T make comics however you want, just that it's best to look at the broad picture and to tailor your work to suit the mainstream consumer. As big as Manga is in America, you'll be hard pressed to find everyday joes who will be willing to read right to left just because you're too stubborn to make it read left to right.

  • @TomPreston6 You should check out how you word things then, because from a well minded stand point yes, yes you do bash on them. And it's popular BECAUSE the average Joe's picked up a manga and looked at it. And if they're too stubborn to figure out a manga then nine times out of then they're not going to appreciate it anyway and that is not the masses a manga artists is trying to reach. They either grab a DC or rather more newspaper types. If anything your words discouraging to others.

  • @AriLaiSuki That's the problem with speaking "generally." Someone always thinks that exceptions disprove the rule.

  • " can't tell you how annoyed I am when people make their comics reading right to left instead of the usual left to right. Unless you live in a country which reads that way 24/7 or you're selling your books in a country which reads that way, it's entirely unnecessary."

I find it amusing you say that and you're playing Japanese music, ya know...from people who read "backwards", yet it seems you speak clean English. So WHAT are you trying to get at here?

  • @AriLaiSuki I chose that song because one of the lyrics is "I think I can" and yet it's Japanese and it's sort of making fun of the Anime-fan-girl in the comic.

Also... it fit the length of the video.

  • @TomPreston6 It's still contradicting that you bash on people who aren't raised with "Right to Left" reading and you throw up a Japanese song, makes you more of an ass. And saying someone shouldn't sharpen a skill in drawing comics "Right to Left" when raised "Left to Right" is like saying a "white person should only marry a white person, how dare they marry a black person", ect. Because REALLY why the hell should artists give themselves limitations? That's just dumb.

  • @AriLaiSuki Artists NEED to give themselves limitations if they choose to go into the profession. Yes you can make a comic be ANY size you want thanks to technology and computers. But if you want that same comic to be in print, it needs to be a specific size because we have print sizes and rules which need to be followed. Also, working WITHIN limitations actually helps breed creativity, so I don't think imposing a simple rule (which should be followed without question anyway) is hurting anyone.

  • @TomPreston6 ...What rule? There are no rules to art, this is just you imposing your biased opinions on others without looking at the entire picture.

  • @AriLaiSuki There are guidelines and rules to printing which need to be followed. Did you actually read what I said? I said yes you can make art however you want, because that's art. But if you intend to mass produce and market your work, you need to follow guidelines such as printing sizes and if you intend to market your work to average Americans it's probably in your best interest to make it as accessible as possible and not have flipped artwork just for the sake of "authenticity."

  • @TomPreston6 I'm not talking about the production of, I'm talking when wanting to pursue it and make it. Art is more of a "I want to do it THIS way so I'm going to do it". Have YOU been reading when I've been saying or do you enjoy grabbing at straws to make yourself sound smart? If a person wishes to pursue "right to left" then it is their artistic road at that moment; "left to right" is in no way a "rule" - which you have stated in before comment it should be; THAT is my point.

  • @AriLaiSuki And if that's what they want to do... then FINE. That's FINE with me. I don't fucking care. But if you DO want to pursue it and make a career out of it... my advice is actually quite VALID. And that's ALL I was EVER trying to convey.

  • @AriLaiSuki This isn't a civil rights issue. It's simply common sense. By making a work read "backwards" to how your own culture reads, you are inherently LIMITING your potential market of consumers because the majority of people in your culture still read it the "normal" way.

I really don't understand how people are "offended" by this.

  • @TomPreston6 Hardly, also in case you didn't notice the manga industry in America is BOOMING, and all of which are still in "Right to Left" format; so obviously that is not the case. It IS popular, and its not just singled out to the younger ones, the biggest contributor to the manga industry are adults. And what the hell is the "normal way"? The world is so diverse there is no "normal way". We're not offended, we're just exposing you for the ass that you are.

    Much fun for us really.

  • @AriLaiSuki You're missing the point. It's right to left in Manga because that's how the Japanese read. It's part of their culture. It is NOT a significant enough part of the American culture to justify making a comic read right to left if you intend to publish your own work and expect to reach a large audience.

Why is this such a difficult concept to grasp? I'm not saying you CAN'T... I'm saying that if you DO and you want to make MONEY off it, you're limiting your potential market.

  • @TomPreston6 The moment a person only wishes to make art for only the money if the moment they stop being a true artist. Art is a form of expression to be enjoyed, when an artist mass produces it and sells it out, it more so is because they want to share a part of them with everyone else. Not everyone thinks like you do sir; not everyone only sells themselves out for the money.

And it is AMERICA, therefore many cultures in it; there ARE Japanese Americans sir.

  • @AriLaiSuki Oh bullshit. Don't pull that "sellout" crap on me. EVERYONE gets paid for their specific talents. Builders. Contractors. Producers. Directors. Writers. etc. Why the FUCK should an artist NOT get paid for their work? Because then they're not a "true" artist? Do you think people like Rumiko Takahashi (a manga artist) considers herself a sell-out because she gets paid to make manga? Or what about Jim Davis or Bill Waterson? They all got PAID to make comics yet they're still true artists

  • nicely done :)

but whenever I use the Paint Bucket tool, My drawings always have this white outline, which makes it look ugly :s

    but it

  • @TheNumanumaeh That's because there are "artifacts." This is the result of anti-aliasing OR because of greyscale scanning. If you reduce the colors to black and white only (either through scanning as a lineart or by reducing it using threshold) using the fill bucket should work pretty effectively.

  • I find it hilarious how you annoy yourself over such trivial things like that.

  • @FreezingCharlatan I find it hilarious that people are so unwilling to accept help and advice from people who have more experience than them.

  • @TomPreston6 Oh wow, you actually say you're more experienced than other people?

Not only are you stereotyping the shit out of these artists you try to make fun of and suck the life out of your jokes

you also claim to be better than them just because you don't like the fact that they draw in styles not from their country.

Oh right, it might sound like I'm just assuming things, but why not.

It's not like you're giving off any other kind of vibe.

You're pretty childish despite your age too.

  • @FreezingCharlatan Do you know what "troll bait" is?

  • @TomPreston6 Do you know what "humor" is?

  • @FreezingCharlatan Do you know that "humor" is subjective?

  • @TomPreston6 Do you know that you're arguing with a 16 year old and still can't win?

  • @FreezingCharlatan Well that would only be true if one of us actually WON something... like the conversation for example. Thus far the conversation is still going and no one has "won" anything yet, so your argument is invalid. Unless you automatically assume YOU are right, in which case that's not considered a win.

  • @TomPreston6 Hey hey, your "intelligence" talk doesn't really work. Stop that.

You should know that it is behind your MANY, if not ALL, failed jokes.

Just stop trying to make fun of people who aren't you.

It's not cool to say you're more experienced.

No matter how bad they are.

    Also

Get your ass in a retirement home already.

  • @FreezingCharlatan Is this your idea of a "burn"? Does spouting short negative comments multiple times spliced together into a semblance of a paragraph = "winning" in your eyes? Because right now, all you're doing is proving to me how less mature you are than I am and thus proving my statement that I haphazardly made that I'm more experienced than the people I'm trying to give real-world advice to.

It might not be "cool" to say that but it's sadly the truth, as evident by your "flame."

  • @TomPreston6 Oh wow

    OH WOW

    You're dumb 8)

  • @FreezingCharlatan That's the best you can do? I mean, saying "you are dumb" is like pointing out someone has brown hair or that they have green eyes. That's a pretty lame comeback to my carefully constructed one. I suggest you learn how to better insult people, or better yet, try to understand them before flying off and freaking out over an opinion which is obviously different from your own. You wanna start over, this time without all the insults?

  • @TomPreston6 Haaah, I'm not insulting. I'm stating a fact.

Oh yes you might be educated and all that shit, but you're dumb.

    Very dumb.

There is no point in bothering such an "important" and "wonderful" person as yourself.

    Hypocrite.

  • Please tell what program you used

  • @e7242 Photoshop.

  • @e7242 Photoshop.

  • So, quick question for you: When you sketch out your cartoons, do you use a specific kind of pencil or a specific color? Someone told me that using a mechanical pencil with red/blue lead was a good way of putting out lineart before inking it.

  • @Coriserai I use an ordinary #2 pencil. lol. But I also sketch very light...

  • @Coriserai Blue pencils work... but personally I draw so light with a pencil anyway that I can get away with doing it with a regular #2 pencil. It's weird.

  • lol This comic is funny. I also make comics go right to left, even though I'm American. XD Great job! :)

  • Cool! I love this comic, your style is very simple but effective!

  • Thank you! I actually learned a lot. I´m such a newbie. ^^

One question though. Do you use photoshop or Paintoolsai, or even another?

  • @SmileLyubov Photoshop.

  • this is just curious, what font was that?

  • @Temari125 A combination of "Andrewscript" and "Another."

  • Wait......so you already have it inked out when you color?

Just to clarify, was this done by hand or computer?

  • @Ardhamon5000 Yes. I sketch in pencil and then I ink with Copic pens before scanning the art into the computer. I scan in lineart mode too to make sure my art is ONLY black and white and won't have any "artifacts" for when I color later...

  • @TomPreston6 Cool. It kinda looks like you drew on the PC. I guess that's the magic of your inking. :)

When you say lineart mode. do you mean greyscale?

  • @Ardhamon5000 No, greyscale will have shades of grey in it. B/W lineart mode is sometimes called "text" mode. It's just pure black and white. No grey or anything in between the two colors.

  • I'm really happy with the FLCL soundtrack in the background. Definitely one of my favorite tracks.

  • I don't want to sound all offending since I'm really just curious, but you don't use separate layers for the coloring?

  • @freakypencils31 Nope. Why bother? When I scan in my inks they're in pure black and white lineart mode. All I have to do is select the "fill bucket" and go through coloring in my flats and TADA! Half the comic is colored in a mere matter of seconds!

  • @TomPreston6 True, true. Thanks, and best of luck.

  • Cool. I didn´t know you had a YT channel. Good coloring. Way better than mine.

By the way. Do you know any good Ps tutorials? I have been looking around but havn´t found any good. I´m new to Ps and I want to learn how to use it properly.

  • @texalm1 I'm afraid I don't know any specific tutorials, but if you have any specific questions regarding PS I would be happy to answer them.

  • @TomPreston6 Ok. Thanks. :)

  • @texalm1 Iceflow studio's does a good job in PS tutorial's although they teach complex stuff not coloring.

  • @MrRpgmakerkid Ok. Thanks. Much appreciated.

The coloring doesn´t realy matter right now. I just want to learn how to use it first.
