  • or you know doing a ply rhythm there not actually playing the signature

  • it almost sounds like he's talking in 7/8 i don't know if anybody else can hear it but i think it's quite intersesting how the mind lets an outside source munipulate it subconsciously

  • Ahh, great video. I think of time signitures the same way. Do you like math? I love math and like to mess around with the way I think of the fractions. It makes for some really creative beats.

  • xxxxxxx

    --x--x-

    x--x---

  • hey billy, how would you treat odd times like 11/16, 13/16, 15/16, since those sound very un-musical when you treat for example 11/16 as 2,75/4...

  • @allmetaliswelcome Thanks for your question. I approach all odd times in several ways. If I'm looking to groove and ad-lib I do what I explained on this video. The bottom number doesn't matter. 11/8 and 11/16 can be felt like 5 1/2, 4+4+3, or if the tempo is fast enough and it's 11:4 ratio.. I feel it at 1!

  • you should've talked in 7/8

  • You heard the man! Practice!!!!! Great work, Billy!

  • @KeravnosKyvernitos I don't need dum ass comments on my instructionial videos!!!!!! Just practice!!! ;D

  • @billycanty You have a 10 min video and talk about 9 mins....Thats i am talking about!!! Read your tittle at your video ;))).Now you see???Your tittle doesnt response to the meaning of your video.BTW good work and very helpfull!

  • I really wish I could learn to use traditional technique sometimes. No matter how I try... I can't convert myself to it. The odd-time advice is awesome, I'm using it in all the odd times now, and even polyrithms.

  • most of these videos i skip around because I have been playing drums for a while, but I didn't want to miss anything. Awesome job. What kind of snare are you using?

  • @AveryDanger Thanks! I'm using a 4 ply maple Pearl Masters Premium 6.5x14 snare in black mist finish.

  • Billy, it's been many years since I've played or had a kit & I'm dying to get another one. I find your video very educational & have saved it for future reference.

My former kit was alot like yours with twin bass's. Keep up the good work.

  • @motleyphuckincrue Thanks for your comments. If you want to read the best of a ridiculous haters arguement with me, than check out my video "grooving triplet diddle". Just when I thought there were no more idiots left in the world, once in a while one comes along and baffles me.

  • Standubz, a lil fact everyone in the whole world automatically knows. If you have nothing nice to say, then don't say nothing at all.

It's absolutely amazing how people like you constantly feed on hurting people's feeling's. Everyone is equally equal on this rock & you are no different.

Enlarge your throat & swallow that big bit of pride & simply be happy bro.

  • @motleyphuckincrue Very well put.

  • DUDE!!! you have just opened my mind to play guitar in odd time signatures... DUDE!!!

  • @shoonger001 Cool! I was hoping that I would reach other musicians besides drummers with this.

  • @shoonger001 i watch drumers and only dream to play like them, or own a kit... i was curious about odd time signatures and wounder if i could do it and if i would sounds any good and it does...

  • pleace i'wont the song of the begining... is so cool the keyboards..

  • Damn dude. Ur doublepedaling is insane! I can hardly do anything outside the basic 4/4 and 3/4 pattern. This close to blew my mind!

  • Dude that's crazy good. Man I've beem trying to unlock the mysteries of odd time for a while now. Thanks for helping me figure it out. Oh and thanks for the comments on my vid. I really appreciate it :)

  • are you a dream theater fan by any chance dude

  • gotta love latency in DAWs...I like the video, thanks for putting it together to share!

  • Reggie bush jersey mutha fucka. Go saints!

  • That's right bro! NOLA rules!!!

  • Saints in the superbowl!!!!!!!!

  • @atfsurrey

The advantage of holding them "flat" which is normally called traditional grip, is that the sound is a lot softer. So if your having trouble keeping quiet then you can use traditional grip or just use some wire brushes. Hope that helped (:

  • my fav groove is 5/4

  • @likestooplay

    mine is 7/8 or 11/8 or 17/8

  • Mine is 7/8 and 13/8.

  • i count seven as sev so it doesnt take two syllables :P

  • @kzone92 I do that too. It is THE way, I don't know so few people count like that. I guess you and I are just ahead of the curve. :)

  • i like the sound of your toms!!! Your playing is really good! Keep up the good work!

  • my teacher druming saying the same thing for countin 7/8 is 3 and half. great videos.keep going! your style es very nice to listen. sergio from argentina.

  • Seen a lot of drummers on here, and quite honestly you're one of my favourites.

  • Ok, I will get it in the mail asap ; )

  • heeey great vid!! i posted a vid a while back from me playin at guitar center for the drum off...which i thought my performance was terrible cauz i wasnt prepared but i use a very basic form of 7/8 in the beginnin. can u check it out and tell me wat u think??

  • The theory behind what you were saying was great and a good (new) way for me to look at odd signatures, esp. with Polys. I just found it funny that you kind of did the extremes to back up your way- an awesome solo for 3 and a half way, and a very basic solo for the old 7/8. Great video, and yes, that kit sounds incredible.

  • I guess I had to proove a point.

  • Haha. Really sweet drumming, dude.

  • Well done!!

  • what kit is that?

  • It is the Pearl Masters Premium 4 ply Maple kit in Liquid Amber finish. 8x8, 8x10, 8x12, toms. 12x 14, floor tom. 18x20 Bass Drum, 6 1/2 x 14 snare and 4x 12 snare. All Pearl hardware and Demon Drive pedals.

  • ooh la la. it looks and sounds good!

  • Billy- love your playing. What snare and heads you using here- and what kind of snare and head tension on it? Sounds really good man. I want to get my snare to sound like that. I have the 5.5x14 Pearl MMP I am working on.

  • Thanks, The snare is a 6 1/2 by 14" Masters Premium 4ply maple snare. I actually have a medium to tight tension. The snare is tune in relation to the toms. If you take the snares off it would be around a 4th step higher than the 8" tom.

  • Why do so many people shit talk with comments but then have no videos to back up their shit talk? =\. Some people are just dumb asses. .!,,! Rock on Billy Canty

  • I have been trying to figure that out ever since I joined YouTube. 100% of every shit comment that I get is from someone who cant fuckin play.

  • Comment removed

  • great video! thanks for sharing!

  • hey dude u helped me out ALOT! i saw this vid right before grouping more and more. dude im sub. to u. ur awsome!

  • i wish i saw this video before i got stuck into those damn groupings

  • lol ... funny to think this started with "you ain't nought special" ... dude, sorry for diving deep and hurting your feelings :S

  • You dont get it do you. Im trying to teach you to think before you type. I do that for everyone who writes immature comments because they think they are cool. It shows your personality and how not pro you are. Your pride is blinding you. Open your eyes and read your comments to me.You are not the first or last that I respond to for crap comments.

Im trying to help you but your too badass to get it. 100% of every crap comment that I get is from someone who cant play the damn drums. Wake up please

  • kk mate ... just learn to play in an irregular time yeah?

  • standubz stop ur embarrasing yourself. All the sport and classical training in viola wont make a difference to peoples' opinions of you when they realise how much of a selfcentered person you really are. Either that or your life is seemingly based around having to make yourself look better than everybody else around you. Take your pick; either change ur attitude or enjoy a life adorned by a lack of intimacy with quality human beings.

  • Thanks, well put. Unlike most pro drummers that get shit comments and just pretend that they arent there, I see it as an oppertunity to correct the writer and try to help them. I guess I take a chance of discrediting myself in the process but I try to be as positive as possiable. I appreciate your carefully thought out response to standubz.... Im not sure why my drumming brings out so much hate in some people.

  • may i correct you :p

ur drumming brings up so much hate, because its so awesome and it makes people jealous!

  • Thanks...But Im really not playing anything that amazing. I didnt threaten anyones lives with my grooves did I ?. Its just drums. I get a fuckton of shit emails telling me to quit, I suck, etc, etc. I guess your right.

  • the better you are, the more of those emails you'll get. people sending them are probably unsuccessful at what they do, but have themselves convinced that they're just as good, so in attempts to bring themselves up, they want the bar lowered to make it easier on them. in other words, you're kick ass, they're shitty to decent. great vid man!

  • well, they obviously dont watch any of your videos if they say you suck....or dont drum and are complete idiots

  • lmao ... at least i can play a sport!! and i get paid for it, so who's complainin!? you might wanna try some sort of sport as you are looking a little jolly!! mate, i taught myself drums, don't get me wrong, it's a hard instrument to play well, but at the end of the day, many play it to a high standard so there's too much competition. I'm classically trained and play Viola, i play kit and guitar for fun, i'm also a dubstep producer, my passions lie in music and sport, hardly a "pre-teen idiot"

  • you ain't nought special

  • Congrad's You just made the list of no talent, non - drumming, preteen idiots that like to leave negative messages and think that your comment made a difference in my life.

Do you know how many of your kind is out there? Your negative comment wasnt even original. You can do better than that. Although I did like the little flavor of ebonx in the word "nothing" The problem is that your ass is white without a fraction of soul in you. Better luck next time little homie.

    ahieght... yo? Grow up boye

  • No you didnt.....Stop being a prick.

  • it's funny cus i did ... check the BBC website!?

  • yeah i did ... look on the website you yankee prick

  • you're good man

  • mwboyer1, THAT is hella tru. i agree... i hate kids who got rich parents who have em buy the most expensive pedals they can find and try to get fast. i own a pair of those $99 pdp's and everyone i talk to says im pretty damn fast... take the time to learn the swivel and heel-toe technique people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • heya Billy! what type of metronome are you using? (is it from software? or a separate device?) thanks! :)

  • Sorry for the delayed response. The click is from my Yamaha DTXpress 2 brain. You can do anything with that little thing!

  • All high end pedals are basically the same. Practice makes you fast, not the pedal. Don't believe the hype. This guy could do the same shit with Gibralter Intruders.

  • not true. my double bass speed went through the roof when i got my iron cobras. I was using two mapex single pedals on two bass drums, now i've got the two power glides and it's like a dream.

  • it feels a lot nicer if you count 1.2.1.2.1.2.3 its also a lot easier

  • Your missing my point. It feels nicer NOW but if you take a chance and try what im showing you in the video you will notice that 1.2.1.2.1.2.3 is basically the same but you are only counting the quarters and the last 8th which would translate to 1-1-1-3 or to be mathmatically correct 1-2-3-"and" 1-2-3-."and" while FEELING all of the 8th pulses instead of counting all of them. We dont count 12345678 when we play in 4/4 so why should we count all of them in odd times.?Less counting MORE GROOVING.

  • all about da groove...i'm on the same page.

  • I'm not a color by numbers guy myself, I need to rehearse these odd times. Great vid.

  • what recordning gear are u using? preamp etc...

  • I use Sonor 6 Producer with a windows based system with a Roland/Edirol interface. I record into an old Yamaha

AW16G DAW with AKG, EV ,Sure, MXL and Audio Technica mikes.

Then I end WAVE files into the Sonor DAW for mixing, editing then into Windows Movie Maker for lining up the video and audio for YouTube. Its pretty basic. I use badass Event moniters and a vintage Phase Linear 400 solid state tube amp for driving a sony sub. Thats about it.

  • You should get Vegas!! its soooo much better lol...

  • Nice vid Billy, cheers! Keep it rolling.

  • Hey man, counting odd times the way you´ve suggested is a very interested tip, thank you.

  • What pedals are u usin?

  • he uses the pearl demon drive pedals

  • OMG

  • ???

  • i saw them.. and they are amazing

  • those pedals are nasty!! i would love me some of those but im happy with my Iron Cobra pedals
