A stranger or a friend to spout off to is not the same as a therapist. A stranger can listen and offer advice but who knows how relevant (or damaging) that advice can be). A friend can listen and be too biased based on your history and not your potential to change.

Drinking buddies and friends are necessary and healthy and a contribution to a strong support network which can sometimes be better than a therapist. But if one is needed, then there is no substitution for a good therapist.
