The Americans are convinced when a americans horse win in U.S.A is the best horse in history. Ridiculous! In the real world, outside your "Truman Show", everyone knows the best horses ever are italian . VARENNE( trot). Galloping RIBOT. To be the best, you have to travel the world and win big races, beating the strongest horses in the world. Somebeachsomewhere, Seabiscuit , Secretariat ect ect champion about what? . They never seen Europe.Watch my video about VARENNE and shut up please.
Howard Tupper... boy that's a name from the past... are you from the Albany area? I watched TV Tournament Time many a Sunday morning and even made a Junior's show... What did ya want the track announcer to say... Nevele Pride is trotting up a storm and goodbye small fry!
no kidding... I researched it some the other night coming up empty.. I have emailed Saratoga Raceway to ask, doubt I'll get a reply though... we seem to forgot that we're a harness track with a decent history in the days of the VLT...
Greyhound. Period. BTW among great Euro trotting mares I would pick Rocquepine over Une De Mai, great as she was. Nevele Pride was a speed demon but can never erase the unavenged defeat by Une De Mai after he had parked her out thru six turns in the International Trot, then skipped the rematch int he Challenge Cup in favor of time trialing at Indianapolis....what, Lexington and Du Quoin wouldn't have been there later? Dancer knew his horse and wanted no rematch...
Yeah, he was pretty amazing, even now 56 and change is a pretty good mile on a half track. To think how heavy the bikes were back then.... With the bikes they have now he could have broken 1:50, I think. He was incredible
Old bike, shoes and the driver sits straight up. The horse is great, you can only imagine what he could have done with all the modern advantages. But then again back then they TRAINED a horse and took time cooling them out, I think they had something there!
I was present at Saratoga Harness on that day and witnessed this race live - thanks for posting this interesting piece of history. Nevele Pride indeed also shaded the world record held by a pacer and it was in fact another four years until a pacer went faster than Nevele Pride did on this afternoon (Strike Out's 1:56:3 1972 Little Brown Jug triumph)!
crazy isn't it... that was only 38 years ago... speed has changed alot over a relatively short period of time...and to think Rare Jewel went 1:51 in an invy at Saratoga last year and it wasn't the fastest time of just the YEAR on a half....
I was nine years old and just can't say! I do remember Roy Shudt not from Saratoga but from my parents taking me to Brandywine Raceway in the late Sixties and early Seventies.
It was a real great horse. I never gonna forget the feeling of Nevele Pride.

it doesn't sound like Tupper.... Tupper didn't sound that rigid... did Tupper call races in his old days

He called at Saratoga in the 50s after Roy Shudt left.

You forgot Vivid Photo's 1:50.2 mile at Colonial last year..
Wings71ny 4 years ago
56 miles aren't common for a trotter on a half!
Ouellette1978 4 years ago
Saratoga Harness had 3 sub 1:56 trotting miles in a 2 week stretch last year...
Wings71ny 4 years ago
56 miles have become commonplace... just look at the Saturday results any given week at Saratoga...
