I forgot that I had clicked on this song before minimizing the screen. When the song started, I thought I was having a psychedelic flashback for a second.
I was born in the wrong place and the wrong decade. California in the early 90s should have been England in the late 50s. ELO, Queen, The Who, Elton John, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, they all make up well over half of my favorite music. AND I would have been around to see some epic racing.
@davidjensen12726 there are alot of bands that were great out of the 70s, I cant just say one band over all is the best, you forgot Pink Floyd, the Who, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Rush , the CARS who made a big splash in 1978 with their debut album and Candyo. You forgot the Police, Foreigner, the Doors , Queen. But dont get me wrong, I love ELO. Im just gonna say I love the 70s.
music is based on opinion all music since the dawn of time has been good in someones opinion never hate on any kind of music because it all takes time and skill, except for mainstream rap lol
Steve Buscemi putting on lipstick and hanging up the phone 1:37. Erasing Billy Madison's name from the "People to Kill" list. Classic. would have been stupid without this song.
This is the second time this band has thrown me for a loop. For years I thought that "Hold On Tight" was John Lennon. And when I heard this one, I was certain that The Bee Gees had teamed up with a solo singer. I'm still not convinced that Barry, Robin and Maurice didn't sneak into the studio during the chorus.
ELO were one of the best bands ever to come out at the time and I love them heaps!!! Music now days just does not really comptete. There are alot of bands that came out in this era and please if anyone asked me which was my favourite I would not like to say. My kids really love the music I listen to and they are now in their early 20's so keep listening guys and girls.!!!.
@MsLioness010 Well, as much as I have found a new affinity for ELO having never known where these songs I've heard on countless occasions have originated from and having always loved them, I can in fact say I have been a fan of ELO for quite some time. I'm partial to heavy metal, I love Pantera and Hatebreed... But even a metal-head needs to sit back and relax to something that inspires something other than hatred. You know, I love the Beatles, I love Pink Floyd... and without a doubt I love ELO
this song is tight i like the lil beat thang goin when the phone starts ringing but the blue days black nightspart seems like somebody died overdosed on herion jamin 2 this song. on the phone calling 911 or some shit. badass song gonna roll up 2 da college jamin this song with 2 12's n a bull horn lol
I dont how old are the people who reminds their chilhood, im just 17 but my dad always listened this song and some others but i dont know why i just love this one! my native language is spanish but like a magical way i learned this song at the same time i was learning to say mama or papa LOveit!
this reminds me of my childhood. everynight when my cooked dinner, she always had this song playing. we always danced around the kitchen singing and giggeling to this song ..... felt just like yesterday ..... <3 Love You Mom <3
Remember hearing this song while my wife and I were honeymooniing in Atlantic City the year before the Casinos ruined the place, when there was a great northeast coast style "boardwalk" ... Such a loss ....
Every Sunday lunch my friend Martin and I would drive down to the pub and play this song to death in the 70's....fortunately the pub klandlady was as big a fan as we were...
This really is a beautiful song. ELO is quite underrated. They're known for their quirky, fun songs, but honestly Jeff Lynne is not only an excellent Vocalist, but an excellent producer and songwriter as well.
This song makes me think of my childhood... my parents were big ELO fans, and they would come home from work on a Friday and pour a glass of wine and chill in the living room listening to this and chatting while my brother and I played Lego on the carpet. My father's dead now, the house long sold. I wish a telephone line could transcend time.
I cannot listen to this song and not think of the scene from Billy Madison where Steve Buschemi puts the lipstick on and crosses Billy off of his "People to Kill" list ROFL X-D
this was playing in hmv the other week, and some pathetic little 15 year old prick turned to his mate and said: 'theyved copied this from green days 21 guns'..i felt like pummelling the cunt, excuse my french.
@redwolfmoonhowl Wow! you sure helped me to remember waiting too. I am past crying now, but I get a lump in my throat even today at 65 y.o. So sad, really, all the missed opportunities, and all the wasted time, waiting and waiting for that cursed phone to ring. You're in my book of the good guys now. Peace.
God I wish that i lived back in the 60s and 70s and had this be the new music to listen to. I was born in 85, but grew up listening to all the great classic hits from the 60s, 70's and 80's. I love it all and I can say that Im a better youngen for listening to these hits.

My only comment is "what a fine job you are doing Sir" sweet memories of that great summer of 77 the weather could not match 76 but the music was far better.
i really like this song, coz it reminds me of my childhood. But now when i listen to it, the lyrics are meaningful but......he seems a bit stalkerish staying on the phone through the night listening to it ring. :s
@pp3k07 I really like this song too! But I hope I can persuade you for the sake of ALL passion in song that--serious as it can be--much of what we now wonder is "stalkerish" behaviour, we used to call "lovelorn". Don't let Political Correctness ruin everything for you! Well, at least not this song. I related to it at 8 years old or so because it's really just about loss, and depicts a suspension in the moment of loss, via the ringing phone image, that is universal.
the first time I heard this song, I was CERTAIN in my mind that it was a Wings song, because Jeff Lynne sounds JUST like paul mccartney, both in voice and songwriting.
Funny, because the first time I heard "Mr. Blue Sky," I was certain in the same way that it was a john lennon solo song. So many bands are influenced by the Beatles, but ELO does the best in sounding just like them.
