  • I have to say sir, you are one of about 3 people I've ever seen that can pull off the 'stache

  • I can either smoke several times a week, or go for several weeks without smoking. It doesn't seem to make any difference. It's hard to find tobacco's here in Canada and of course they are taxed to death. Thanks for the reflective, pleasant videos.

  • Do you have to go into the middle of the woods to smoke a pipe in America?

  • I find myself addicted to pipes, but not the tobacco. I was a cigarette smoker for about 3 years up until today. I know it is hard to quit this addiction. But, I would much rather smoke a pipe 2-4 times a day than smoke cancer sticks 30+ times a day lol.

  • You are so right my friend. I moved from 30 plus years of cigarettes to Pipes. I often think of being addicted to my Pipe now. Thing is though I love it and the variety of tastes have got me. I am in love with my Pipes. Thanks for the video

  • Another very thoughtful video. I have been a Pipe smoker, off and on, for over 30 years. But lately, because of the videos i have been watching, i seem to be smoking my pipe more and more. Not sure if it is addiction?

btw, have you ever herd of Philson hats?

  • That is an awesome shop. Had the pleasure of visiting a few years ago. Wish I would have had some money to spend and the tobacco knowledge I have gained.

  • I'm trying to come to terms with the fact that I'm going to have to tell my Dad I want to smoke a pipe (I'm 19). He quit cigs and he told me to never start smoking cause it is almost impossible to quit, but what if you take out the addiction factor and never inhale? It makes pipe smoking seem like something to consider now.

  • Im not addicted but if i haven't smoked in a long while it makes me want to light up but its not a need its like when you get a craving for pizza.

  • Always liked the smell of pipes, always been disgusted by cigarettes. Considering giving pipe smoking a go but I'm afraid of addiction and health problems. What's the longest you've gone without smoking and not feeling cravings etc? Is it really something you can just pick up and enjoy now and then? I enjoy a drink sometimes, I don't think there's danger of becoming an alcoholic, I like a glass to wind down with. I like the idea of pipe smoking for the same purpose.

  • @Shindai nah I dont think theres much chance at all of addiction. If you smoked like 4 bowls a day, particularly if you inhaled then yeah posibbly, but even then Idt it would be the same as a cig smokers addiction. When I started I was smoking once a day, and then one day I smoked 3 bowls. My mother found out and starting lecturing me saying I was addicted. So I'm like w/e and stopped for 3 weeks to show her it wasn't an addiction.

I am addicted to sushi however. Must eat 2+ lbs a month.

  • @mobiussquadron lol that's a lotta sushi xD I started smoking around March, went through three pipes working out wtf I was doing lol but now got it more or less down, I smoke about a bowl a month, coz my girlfriend doesn't like it and there's no garden where we live so I only smoke while walking the mile into town or so, which is pleasant :) I've fancied it a few times when it wasn't an option, but I don't think I've ever had strong cravings. So, happy me :) Does give me heartburn though :p

  • @Shindai You have good taste! It's a very enjoyable hobby and one worth pursuing. There are health problems, of course, but they can be monitored and counteracted (I recommend watching PipeFriendCHS's videos on pipesmoker health). You can definitely enjoy it as sparingly as you please- I've gone weeks at a time without even thinking about smoking. Then there's weeks where I smoke every day. It's very much like alcohol, the average user doesn't risk addiction. Hope this helps!

  • like you, i have been sick now for over a week. i have wanted to smoke my pipe but really dont see any need to do so seeing that i can not taste or smell. sure i could have a bowl of prince albert, lol , but why waste the time. so no, i dont feel like im addicted to pipe tobacco, but man i sure do miss it right now. nothing like a good pipe to start or end my day.

  • ive gotta say your natural backdrop is absolutely gorgeous. my dream home is gonna sit in a place like what you have there. nice vid aswell, and gorgeous pipe.

  • I feel pretty strongly that nicotine by itself is not very addictive. Cigarettes are addictive because of the medley of chemicals they add in order to make them addicted. If you can find additive free ciggies (American spirit, chesterfield has an additive free pack), those are fine. As are pretty much all pipe and cigar tobaccos, short of the reaaaally cheap stuff.

  • Does the toabaccco shop in Bellingham(Fairhaven) Washington mail out baccy? That PS English Oriental Supreke sounds good. I am getttttttttting into Orientals!!! I found some old tins (2-4+ years) of Ferndown at my local tobacconist. Enjoying the ferndown. Virginias with Orientals.

  • great video. im a new pipe smoker and really enjoy just slowing down and seeing things like they are.

  • Great video, I completely agree. Never smoke cigs (although i "tried" in High School), but the pipe has been a relaxing and enjoyable stress-reliever in these days of high stress. And have never felt any addiction to anything other than relaxation! :-) My "own" English blend is 50% pure Virginia, 50% pure Latakia. Really like it.

Great background/scenery in your vid; the Pastor of our church is from Bellingham, and always speaks longingly of it.

    -bruce

  • how do you feel about cigars?

  • I smoked cigs for 17 years and quit. 3 years later I picked my first pipe and ther is no comparing the two. I smoked cigarettes because my bod y had to, I smoke a pipe when I want! Love the vids, please keep e'm coming:)

  • @the14thbear - You said it way better than I did - right on! Thanks for the comment!

    -Tom

  • nice one...i love english blends.

  • Haha tamping with the finger. Now that's a mans man!

Great video! I enjoyed it a lot.

  • What it is, is "Damn! I forgot the tamper again!" :)

    -Tom

  • @NWPipeSmoker Ha!

  • smoking pipes are the best!!!

    I think I'm addicted hahah

I don't care because I love it, love it, love it

  • I'm with you on the "addiciton" aspect of pipe smoking. Several times I've gone a week without smoking a pipe and never experienced a craving to light up.

  • Right on - if I was actually addicted like cigarettes, I wouldn't do it. Thanks for the comment - I'm enjoying your vids, Doug.

    -Tom

  • I smoked cigs for 13 years and quit. I went about 5 years without smoking anything until I started pipe smoking about 4 years ago. I can say that pipe smoking is a totally different creature than cigs. I can go days to weeks without the pipe. I could never have went that long when I smoked cigarettes.

  • Thanks for the comment! That's sort of what I'm thinking too - that pipesmoking is quite different than cigarette smoking.

    -Tom

  • I do smoke too much for the nicotine, but as an ex ciggie smoker, it's hard to break the chain. But for sure a pipe is way less addictive. Always a pleasure to see you puffing in the great outdoors...by for now NW. Nice weather, nice pipe, life is good.

  • Thanks, Dub - life IS good!

  • Well, it looks beautiful up there.

I agree on the addiction front, definitely don't feel the need the way cigarette smokers describe it.

  • You'll be back, sooner or later ... :)

  • By the by, you mentioned that it was "smoke smoke smoke" that that dinner. What that cigarette smoke? I believe cigarette smoke is just nasty, it makes my throat scratchy and yucky too. And there have been times when I was around lots of it that the same thing happened to me. I believe it is a different animal than pipes or even cigars. To each their own and let us all be free to enjoy as we may, but I HATE cigarettes. Cheers, Kel

  • Howdy Tom, what I love about your videos is how you seem express so perfectly my own thoughts and feelings about things. Like you, I would not smoke a pipe if it became an addiction that was controling me. In fact I will at times purposely abstain from smoking for a while just to make sure it isn't doesn't turn into something I don't want it to be. I love my pipe hobby, but I want it to be something I choose, not something I must.

  • You said that very well, Kel. Thanks for the comments!

    -Tom

  • Well, ...... and thank you for frequently expressing how I feel as a man about things in a way I cannot verbalize well. It's really great to hear.

  • I've always been curious about the tag "English". Where did this English name come from? The tobaccos that go into an "English" blend are not from England at all! The virginias can be from USA, Brazil and Africa. The latakias from Cyprus or Syria. The orientals from Turkey. Predominantly, what you have is a Mediterranean blend and not English!

  • Excellent question! My understanding is that England had tobacco purity laws which prohibited adding anything (including flavorings or toppings, defining an aromatic) thus 'English' blends were pure tobacco with nothing added. In order to be flavorful, generally they were mixtures that included Latakia, Orientals, Virginias, so those mixtures came be to known as 'English blends'. Those laws have since changed, but the moniker remains.

Now let's discuss 'cavendish' - a highly abused term!

  • Tell your borther not to give up and stick to the pipe it is better for him than chew. I used Cope for most of my life and i'am 54 and i finally got it down to one chew a day,and pretty soon none. Tom try this tobacco shop on line it is called MARS cigars& pipes, they Stokkebey Balkan Supreme $24.00 for 16 0z Shipping $6.00 They have a good bit of bulk tobacco.

  • Good advice Wolf ... and that's a great price on the Balkan Supreme. I'm on it! Thanks again!

    -Tom

  • Like you, Tom, I've never felt the signs of an addiction to smoking the pipe. I do it because I love it and not because my mind or body tells me I must. I'd be curious to hear what you think of the Stokkebye once you're sure of your taste buds having returned to normal. Tobacco Reviews does indeed list cavendish in it. Nevertheless, I ask because I, too, am on a balkan kick lately. Last I tried Pease's Caravan, though I'd prefer to find a good bulk. -Chris

  • Hey Chris:

See Wolfgray's comment above - I ordered some, we'll see how it is.

Cavendish is a much-abused term - my understanding is it could be any type of tobacco (often burley), usually cased with molasses or other sugar mixture, but really it's a wider ribbon cut. I like a 'cavendish cut' - they burn evenly and well, usually - but don't care for burley-based cavendish aromatics. A term that needs to be made more precise!

  • Great Video as always.

Cheers from a rather Chilly NW Colorado.

    Brian

  • Growing up in Colorado, I remember that often Craig was in the running with Gunnison for 'coldest low temps in the state'. Keep your fire with you, Brian!

  • I've self learned some pipe smoking techniques for below zero temps ;) #1 keep pipe, baccy & lighter in your inside shirt pocket - I've had them freeze even when outside jacket pocket. My truck's defroster is handy for pre heating pipe, baccy & lighter.

    Cheers

    Brian

  • I agree pipe and cigar smoking can be controled, unlike cig's and snuff that was the stronge addiction i ever went through. Have a Merrry Christmas my Friend. Wolf.

  • My brother 'borrowed' one of my Jums and used pipesmoking to get off chew, though I noticed the other day he's on it again. He said it's the toughest of them all to kick.

  • m glad u reached such a mind peace abt ur pipe smoking,,for me if i smoked less than 2 bowls a day then either m terribly busy or there is smthing really wrong,,i llike how u always demonstrate ur passion concerning pipe smoking mk it even greater thing to do for me

have a great time my friend

    cheers

    ahmad

  • Thanks for the thoughtful comment, as always, Ahmad. Much appreciated!

    -Tom

  • Greetings and Best Wishes from Ontario. Often I go for several days without a smoke. However, on a friday night after dinner with a glass of brandy. A pipe full of english blend or a cigar is a must. I' am smoking a pipe full squadron leader

as I write this note. Cheers!

  • The country where your at looks awesome. How is the fishing up there? I love to always fish new spots...and I have never really caught trout / salmon. So I was thinking of taking a trip up to Oregon, Washington etc...and try camping.

  • Much fishing up here - salmon in the saltchuck, trout in the rivers and creeks. I loved flyfishing back in Colorado, but I haven't done it up here, though I always have good intentions. Good camping in the summer. Let me know if you make it up here and maybe I can show you around - maybe it will get me fishing again.

    -Tom

  • Tom, you got the right attitude ....but I don't know if i could do 2 weeks. good for you.

  • Aw, no judgement intended. I just thought it was interesting - I was expecting more of a reaction to the tobacco deprivation. In a way, I was more 'pipe deprived' than smoking deprived.

  • Hi Tom

    Great Video, great natural light.

Good topic, I am not addicted to pipe smoking but maybe all other aspects of it. Reading up on different tobaccos and pipes. Wanting to try many blends, or buy that next pipe but reluctantly not.

For me I have to be in the right mood or mind set, and after a weekend at a camp with many bowls I find I need a break from the pipe. I never smoked cigarettes so a good bowl or a cigar is more of a relaxing hobbie.

    Regards

    Mark

  • Hmmm...I go back and forth on the pipe smoking addiction question. I smoked cigarettes for 15 years, and I was certainly hooked on those. I stopped smoking cigs for 5 years beffore picking up the pipe, and while I don't really crave a pipe like I did cigs, I certainly do crave one at times. Now, it's nothing I can't control, and I don't turn into a jerk if I can't smoke a pipe. But I do hear the nicotine's siren song from time to time. It's a real thin line for me.

    Cheers,

    Crow

  • The thin brown line ... hmmm, maybe we shouldn't go there! :)

  • nice vid, great view!

oh ya, nice hackert! mines in the mail! thanks for the excellent review.

now i have to go smoke, i'm addicted you know!

  • You'll have to do a vid on it - I'll be interested to see which one you got.

  • oh for sure!

  • addiction? noooooo i can go to sleep without smoking pipe.

  • Addicted to cigarettes, as you described, never smoked a pipe. Colorful background and great lighting of this video. Striking, really.

  • Now Jack, if you enjoyed smoking the cigarettes ...

This was taken on the porch of the guesthouse. My poor little camera couldn't handle all that sunshine!

    -Tom

  • oh... and i forgot... you're welcome. LOL!

  • Great vid...thank you Canada haha, hey we have alot more winter too share with ya dont worry! take care

  • Yes, lots of winter to go around yet ... thanks for the note!

  • i don't seem to have any addiction either... i can go weeks or months without a smoke if i have to. i don't enjoy those times, but it's not like i get crabby or get the shakes or anything :D
