Anyway, its worth watching that doc. I also came across an alternative economic model called 'Participatory Economics' I havnt read to much about it but it looks interesting.

Is the whole world destined to become a sprawling metropolis, with all animals restricted to parks and zoos? Does EVERYWHERE need to sustain humans, grow crops, with electricity and plumbing, etc? If you live your life and do the things you do in a way that you can be respected, people will respect and sometimes even admire you without you actually striving for this. There is a distinct difference between striving to get to the top of your field (which I understand Archbishop Tutu is referring to as competition here) in other words setting out to 'beat' someone else, or just doing what you do and love best and thus ending up at the top... The difference is intention.

Of course not. Many deserve respect, but you don't need to become an archbishop to be respected (or acknowledged more to the point). And perhaps not all priests aspire to be archbishops...

Look, I don't know enough about Mr.Tutu to comment on what his intentions were or were not. I was just trying to clarify what I thought he meant (and apparently I failed miserably. ;-) and what I thought he meant was: Keep your focus on striving to become better at what you do, not on who you want to be.

frmo a religious point of view I understand what he is saying, but I don't think that is much more than wishful thinking. I would rather eveyrone did what is right, but my definition of right is dictated by the bible, and his may be otherwise, so how do we find a mutually agreeable concept of right that everyone can adopt ?

I don't think that is realistic. Only without choice could such a thing be enacted.

I see the UDHR as a thorwback to when idealism really existed in terms of government. I doubt any country would actually live by the letter of it. would be nice if they would, but few countries would cede enough power to make this a relaity. Religion is a misnomer, because people take leaps of faith, and support certain movements without any reasoned base upon which their belief is built. Humanity will always twist the "rules" in order to get what it wants, that is our way.
