@dm4shooter89 Hi! I marched the Cadets in 2011 and this year (2012) It honestly takes about 5 minutes. Our teaching staff is incredible, and you get used to it pretty fast. I even believe it improves your general technique. You break down everything you've learned about marching and build it up to, well THIS!
it was awful from day 1. why hoppy thought this was a good idea will always be a mystery to me.. it's like one of those 1950's educational films you saw in grade school. the corps is good but the book is just horrific..
well without the narration, this show wouldnt even make sense and they probably wouldve gotten 3rd or 4th place with the G.E. score. Think people, think.. FHNSAB!
i competed against these guys in 07 (the last of my 5 years of dci), fucking hate the narration in this show and in general, and am thoroughly opposed to almost all of george hopkins's "visions" regarding the activity....but this was maybe the best, and certainly the loudest, goddamned brassline i've ever heard in person. finals week scores in cali were a sham.
What I'd give to march with them. I have maroon&gold in my blood. I don't feel like I'd be good enough though. This has been my childhood dream! I play bass drum now and I've done it for 5 years but I don't know if it'd be worth it to give it a shot.
I marched 08, 09 Cadets and i am not a fan for the vocals especially in 08 but 2007 i believe vocals accented the show very well and happens to be my 2nd favorite cadet show next to 2000
hey! i marched the guard in 07 and 08. there was about a quarter inch slit cut down the pole top to bottom. the flags were taped to another mini pole inside the regular pole. when you pulled on one side, the other side rolled up. they were seriously the most INCONVENIENT aspect of drum corps life. if they weren't perfectly taped at all times, you were screwed! would give anything to do it all again tho :)
The Cadets are great- there's no denying that, but I just absolutely hate how they always use mics. It really bothers me that they need mics to put on a great show. Plus, mics are kind of lame in marching band. You shouldn't need them to tell the story-- that's what the music is for.
@Sheldon2point0 to me i think it makes me listen to the music more then if it wasnt there and sorry about jerk its more of a catch phrase for me but you dont know that because you dont know me
@paradiddlepedro I disagree. Half the time, I can't pay attention to the music because they're talking over it. Sure, that makes me listen to it harder, but that's only because I'm trying to block out the voices.
sure they can pull it off, but i think they should change it up. because year after year of the same thing gets monotinous. nothing is surprising anymore.
I'm sorry anyone that disagrees with me, but I think the mics, although a little overused, definitely have a purpose in conveying the message of the show.
The Cadets are w/o a doubt the most innovative corps. But the use of mic'd narrative was maddeningly distracting, and gave the show a cheesy, inorganic quality. okay so the show obviously relays the importance music plays in peoples lives. Good for them. But seriously, you DON'T need narration to explain that. If I wanted someone to tell me what music means to them I can do that any day. save the talking for off the field. The music, drill, coreography should be enough to tell the audience the story. I really liked this show. Not really because of the music or visually stuff, but because of the narration. It describes really well what music and band mean.
God I would have loved this show so much more if there wasn't narration. To the average audience member its just so distracting....The parts between words are just so great! "Music is that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent" If hopkins is such a artful thinker, how come he doesn't see this?

"we believe in crappy shows"
All the narration disrupts the musical flow, so all we get are snippets of music interrupted by cheesy lines. I used to like the Cadets. Feel free to thumbs down this comment all you want and see how much I care.

Didn't march corps. But I do have seven years of marching band experience in HS and college, including playing on hornline and drumline, and i'm 2 months away from having a masters degree in music performance. This box doesn't have enough room for my resume, but suffice it to say, I have enough musical experience to make a comment like I did on this performance. I don't have to march corps to make that comment.
I believe you need to shut the fuck up and not summarize my corps in one sentence.
I expected better talent from a graduate-level organist...how does that make you feel? I mean, since I have been accompanied by Anthony Newman, I'm a very good judge of character...and by that authority, I can safely generalize your entire playing career in one short phrase...you suck.
What a shame that you should criticize any other human being for any reason.
Just because it's not your style, or something that you don't even enjoy, doesn't mean anything. Especially since you yourself haven't ever marched. You have never seen the dedication that these people put in. Literally dead sprinting to reset their drills again and again. I've done HS and College marching, and I guarantee, nothing you have done compares. Please do not criticize the hard work of others cuz it hurts you
Yet again, another person who is stuck in 1985 and doesn't allow modern show designs in, much like all the has beens in senior corps. Let it go and embrace the new era, amplification, narration, singing (not that I like that one either) but its a new day and DCI and WGI are really intergrating more and more. If you refuse to embrace these new concepts, your groups will just float along and never really become any better...SH
I like what they did with the show. I like narration in their show. They have an amazing show. the narration adds another dimension to the show. To me the cadets have always done a show that is a little bit out different. The color guard is amazing. they executed their show very well. does any one know were i can find last years finals show. Thanks. I think that the narration adds another level of difficulties for the performers. I like the narration that involves the guard.
Actually, the founding drum major of The Cadets from 1934 came to see us on finals week since he lives around LA. Anyway, he had not seen The Cadets (called Holy Name Cadets back in the day) since 1946. He was so amazed to see the same corps he founded 61 years later and he enjoyed every minute of the show...no joke either.
Seeing the founding member of The Holy Name Cadets from 1934 was the highlight of my 2007 season, no lie.

Yeesh. I just watched the second half. Jumpin' Judy Garland on a pogo stick, this is awful. I mean, there's nothing wrong with being gay, I guess, but this isn't your garden-variety gay. This isn't even Freddie Mercury gay. This is serious, weapons-grade gay.
Symphonic Movement and Blue Shades are some of my favorite pieces. I feel like Symphonic Movement was just way too fast...but I understand that they are trying to fit all the music within the time limit. Also, the trumpet solo is originally on clarinet and I think it should stay on clarinet. No offense to this soloist whatsoever, I'm just not a fan of it on trumpet...especially since a lot of the solo is cut out. And I'm with most people on the narration, I think it takes away from the music
This show is incredible but the talking ... uhh ... I love the music and the drill, I can almost bet my life that if the removed the vocals for finals they would have been the 2007 DCI Champs. And Im a die hard BD fan.
lol, Sorry bro ^_^ just speculating. You would know much better then i would since in fact you marched with Cadets this past. Congrats on the great sound that you guys had. My favorite hornline of the year.
I'm guessing most of the people commenting on this are still in high school, and/or have never marched in a finalist drum corps. So everyone who's getting bent out of shape by the haters, just smile and nod HAHA. They know not what they say.
wait wait wait, you're the soloist that played at the part where the one guy says "alright, now lets try something with nooo voice" !?!?!?!? no effin way! i loved that solo, it was amazing, i wanna learn it so bad. mad props man. that was AMAZING. i loved this show.
Come on guys...Cadets have NEVER rested on their laurels - they've always been innovators. (Z-pull in '83 and layered music themes in '89 come to mind) With that comes the negative vibe because we all want it to stay like it is. Look at Star in '93 and how so many people "hated" that show. Go back and watch it now and see how many aspects from that show have been utilized in drum corp ever since.
You CAN'T hate the Cadets...Even as a BD alum that's just lame.
Dude? You CAN'T be serious!!!!! How can ANYONE hate The Cadets? It's one thing to say (like everyone else) that you hate the narrations or even that you hate this show, but to hate The Cadets???? That's like saying you hate air or food. That's just crazy. I mean I'm a DIE HARD Crown addict but I have much respect for The Cadets. Bottom line: if you hate The Cadets, then you hate DCI. Seriously.
really?? cus i love coats, bd, and cavies. by saying i dont like this corps im saying i hate the direction. i never said i didnt respect them, i respect any corps that wins as much as they do, i just dont like everything they do.
Well since you hate narration so much, you're in luck: a few corps are working together to get DCI to create a rule banning it all-together. They're also trying to outlaw pit amplification and use of electronic instruments. (I agree with the third proposal) I just wish that everyone weren't so afraid of change. I mean I know The Cadets' '06 show was a bit out there, but that's what makes them unique. I mean it's not like their music has suffered with all this change.
I hate that narrative crap but I love The Cadets. But that narrating just takes all the "natural" out of it. I hated that singing when they came to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta too. I wish they'd do it the old way.
Am I the only person on earth who LOVES narratives? Kudos to the Cadets for being different. That's exactly what drum corps need nowadays; new and innovative ideas. And besides, without the narratives the show title wouldn't have made much sense.
The music and drill were fantastic, but I think there are more interesting ways to be avant-garde than telling the audience how you're achieving it. 10/10 to the performers, but the design team should let the art speak for itself.
Well said -- I concur. Brilliantly performed show, though. And oddly, I like watching the run-through more than the actual contest performance. Fewer distractions, I guess.
Since we never did full runs on show days, we run through chunks of the show...this video is simply all the chunks pasted together so it appears like a run-through. That's all...
Since we don't do run-throughs on show days, we run through chunks of the show. Basically the guy who was recording this took all the chunks and put them all together so it looks like a full run-through....
Was that Mozart's piece "Dies Irae" at 8:32? i saw this show in murfreesboro, i wish i would have recorded it. It kinda tells my story as a trumpet player.
Absolutely amazing video! I used to be like "man the cadets always talk in their shows". But MAN! This is just plainly amazing. Wow. Definetely impressed.
No - you are both correct actually. Cadets don't do run throughs on (most) show days. However - if you look closely, you can see that this is just a bunch of short clips patch worked together. Obviously - the corps chunked through the show - so when you hear Gino tell the corps they are "ready for tonight" at the end - he was referring to Semis.

I really liked this show. Not really because of the music or visually stuff, but because of the narration. It describes really well what music and band mean.

Narration is horrific. I am not interested in seeing the rest of their show. It's corny and takes away from the music.

The narration is what makes this show...

i actually kinda like the narrations =] but i like the old cadets better :/

well, i like this show. really cool.

What drum corps did you march for?
betaomega04 4 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Didn't march corps. But I do have seven years of marching band experience in HS and college, including playing on hornline and drumline, and i'm 2 months away from having a masters degree in music performance. This box doesn't have enough room for my resume, but suffice it to say, I have enough musical experience to make a comment like I did on this performance. I don't have to march corps to make that comment.
bradtaylor32 4 years ago
I believe you need to shut the fuck up and not summarize my corps in one sentence.
I expected better talent from a graduate-level organist...how does that make you feel? I mean, since I have been accompanied by Anthony Newman, I'm a very good judge of character...and by that authority, I can safely generalize your entire playing career in one short phrase...you suck.
Keep your words to yourself.
betaomega04 4 years ago

I like the narration that involves the guard.

so is this the corps that is going to use water and amped brass and all that gay shit they passed.......just wondering.....
JINLEY99 4 years ago
I didn't see any water being used, nor did I see any of the brass players amped... just sayin'
Patrick6410 4 years ago
they didnt do it this year obviously.
hopkins just got those allowed on the field like last month. they'll be using them sometime in the next couple years.
Pinkfairy72 4 years ago
I agree completely. The founding fathers would also be appauled w/the narration. It takes away from the show...let the horns speak for themselves.
sparkypat427 4 years ago

This is serious, weapons-grade gay.

ya... that solo should definitely be on a clarinet.

and yes i know drum corps don't have woodwinds. haha
klarinette728 4 years ago

You, my friend, are WRONG in all caps.
If narration kept us from beating the Blue Devils, then how did we win DCI West in their backyard?
Explain that for me, won't you?
wilsonkm 4 years ago
lol, Sorry bro ^_^ just speculating. You would know much better then i would since in fact you marched with Cadets this past. Congrats on the great sound that you guys had. My favorite hornline of the year.
katome1 4 years ago
The only reason i like this show is because of the flat-out awesome sound of the players.
I think that if any other corps had talking in their show this year, they would have been terribly bad.
DCIRules 4 years ago

You CAN'T hate the Cadets...Even as a BD alum that's just lame.

chopstixbms 4 years ago
Seriously.
drmbeaufort 4 years ago 3
really?? cus i love coats, bd, and cavies. by saying i dont like this corps im saying i hate the direction. i never said i didnt respect them, i respect any corps that wins as much as they do, i just dont like everything they do.
chopstixbms 4 years ago
Well since you hate narration so much, you're in luck: a few corps are working together to get DCI to create a rule banning it all-together. They're also trying to outlaw pit amplification and use of electronic instruments. (I agree with the third proposal) I just wish that everyone weren't so afraid of change. I mean I know The Cadets' '06 show was a bit out there, but that's what makes them unique. I mean it's not like their music has suffered with all this change.
drmbeaufort 4 years ago
I hate that narrative crap but I love The Cadets. But that narrating just takes all the "natural" out of it. I hated that singing when they came to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta too. I wish they'd do it the old way.
bigdap100 4 years ago
Am I the only person on earth who LOVES narratives? Kudos to the Cadets for being different. That's exactly what drum corps need nowadays; new and innovative ideas. And besides, without the narratives the show title wouldn't have made much sense.

loho174 4 years ago
The music and drill were fantastic, but I think there are more interesting ways to be avant-garde than telling the audience how you're achieving it. 10/10 to the performers, but the design team should let the art speak for itself.

Well said -- I concur. Brilliantly performed show, though. And oddly, I like watching the run-through more than the actual contest performance. Fewer distractions, I guess.

Since we never did full runs on show days, we run through chunks of the show...this video is simply all the chunks pasted together so it appears like a run-through. That's all...
wilsonkm 4 years ago
Since we don't do run-throughs on show days, we run through chunks of the show. Basically the guy who was recording this took all the chunks and put them all together so it looks like a full run-through....
