A crucial criteria for the Royal Variety Show in the recent years is that all acts have to perform LIVE. This is to keep the show's credibility and quality. I was there during the rehearsal and Leona was definitely singing Live.

The whole point in a condenser microphone is that they pick up ALL frequencies, whereas dynamic mics can only pick up what is being sung directly into it, which is why the bass bottoms out if you're as little as an inch away.
She's a good singer, but any REAL music critic will tell you Snow Patrol's was better. She achieved the download record off the back of BGT.

She's changed a classic song, which encompassed an arrangement of drums, voice, guitar, bass, and strings, into nothing but a showcase for her voice - which IS good - but she's too show-offy for me. Watch at about 1:57, when she sings AWAY from the microphone, her face is nowhere near and yet there is no change in frequency, compression, or "volume" (technically loudness).
Also, around the 3:04 mark there is a string of lyrics where she is obviously miming out of time with the music.
And when she's warbling around 4:00, she moves right away from the mic, again without change in frequency, compression, or loudness.

No it never did cross my mind that you know what you're talking about, mainly because I know what I'm talking about, and know that everything you've said is ignorant to music production. Yes, I'm a student, at one of the UK's leading music universities - Leeds College of Music.
I named the SM58, which IS an industry standard microphone. Having said that, ALL dynamic microphones have the same flaws which I named, and that somehow aren't present in this video.
I've also performed hundreds of gigs around the North East, and usually I'll use an SM58 microphone, or similar, and always if you step back from the mic, the frequencies change to be more top end (treble), due to dynamic mics having very little bass response unless you're literally kissing it.
Also, belting does not help that, if you've EVER sung into a dynamic microphone then you should know that.
I agree with kangootom and mr know it all if you're so certain that all mic's you must be upclose , explain to me why a) every single big vocalist in the industry leaves space between their mouth and their mic and b) every performer on every theatre stage everywhere, their mic is on their forehead , be a bit difficult to put your lip on it

Not all mics, just dynamic mics, and she's using a dynamic mic. The only vocalists who generally leave a space are the pretty vocalists because they'll earn more money if their face is not obscured, and they also mime generally speaking. Also in music videos generally you leave a space.
As for theatre performers, they'll be using condenser microphones, not dynamic microphones. I've mic'd up the Cleveland philharmonic orchestra on occasion, and we always used condenser microphones for our recordings. C1000s, Rode NT2s, Sontronics STC2s, et cetera, not SM58s.

I'm not one of the iPod generation, I refuse to buy one. I barely even use MP3, most the time it's AIFF, FLAC, or when I do use MP3, it's almost always 320 kbps, or at the very least 256 kbps. I also own a vinyl player, and around 250 vinyls.
The loudness, or 'volume', does NOT change, I just ran this performance through logic, and it's perfectly compressed. And there is no change in loudness either, it's not just my hearing that says so.

Her Tour will be in 2010 after she has her second Album come out in 2009, that way she can make her tour show will be long enough. Aaaah, I get it now! So they've decided to cleverly disguise a condenser microphone as a dynamic microphone, despite condenser microphones being about 3 or 4 times the size! And they went to all that trouble just to throw me off ;-). They almost had me, but thank you for pointing it out, otherwise I'd have made quite a fool of myself! Haha!
I'm not saying her voice ruins the song, I'm saying the fact that she only cares about the one instrument (her voice) is what ruins the song.

Yes I can tell what type of microphone it is from afar, I'm educated at the best music university in Britain!
The whole point in a condenser microphone is that they pick up ALL frequencies, whereas dynamic mics can only pick up what is being sung directly into it, which is why the bass bottoms out if you're as little as an inch away.
She's a good singer, but any REAL music critic will tell you Snow Patrol's was better. She achieved the download record off the back of BGT.

It was the x factor and she won it 2 years before the release of that record so go and spin a new one, actually leona's version was a hell of a lot more of a critical success than snow patrol's , and she is a hell of a lot more successful than most if not all music acts in britain today , and dont say thats off the back of the x factor because its not , all the other winners faded to nothing , she made music history

Get a £1 karaoke mic and try it, it's still a dynamic, you'll see, I'm right! Or buy an SM58, same thing happens.

All I'm saying is that on THIS DAY, at THIS moment, she was lip-syncing. I'm not saying she can't sing, look back and you'll see I said it a dozen times, she CAN sing. However! I don't like how she hogs the music and makes it just a showcase for her voice instead of emotionally attaching any feeling to the lyrics and arrangement!
The music is second in this song, it's merely a backing track to her voice, you see what I mean? Music should NEVER be just a background noise!

It's mimed, note how when she moves away from the mic there's no change in how loud she is. I studied in music production, I know what I'm on about.
She's changed a classic song, which encompassed an arrangement of drums, voice, guitar, bass, and strings, into nothing but a showcase for her voice - which IS good - but she's too show-offy for me. There literally isn't 5 seconds where she isn't singing, and that to me says "I love myself", rather than portraying the lyrics like the original.

Yes, because she's not singing the lyrics with any feeling, she's just hitting the notes with perfect precision. I don't feel like I believe in what she's singing, I just feel like she's obsessed with her voice. She doesn't allow the music to do anything because she just constantly draws the attention to her voice.
Snow Patrol's is amazing, this version is just bland and boring, and has absolutely no feeling. It's just a person showing off their voice, I don't care, I want a song!

A quick search online actually shows that Leona Lewis does in fact mime most of her concerts, I can't hear her go flat in this rendition, and I don't think it is a rendition, I think it's a recording, and she's miming.
I'm sure the queen has nothing against miners, that aside, I'm sure she couldn't care less if she was at a concert and the singer was miming either. In fact it's probably MORE likely at a gig like that because there are so much nerves it must go perfect - hence, mime it.

She mimed "Happy" on a dancing programme over in the US last year. When Leona does mime she mimes to the proper track, not to a recording she recorded earlier. No the wonder the music industry is going down with "musicians" like you around....why would they let you into the best music uni in the UK if you don't know what you're talking about? BOOM.

Yes but you would hear a shift in frequencies so that the sound would turn more 'trebley', because dynamic microphones don't pick up bass as well once you move back from them. In fact you're supposed to keep your top lip on the mic at all times because the shift is so strong. And yet nothing happens when she steps back. Not even a loudness change.

I'm actually not bored with my life at all, it's pretty intense ;-).
And yes, lots of pop acts actually mime, just no good ones. And most decent acts sing with their top lip on the mic as well. The majority of Indie and alternative bands, as well as really all bands, plus all decent singers past and present from Amy Winehouse, to the righteous brothers sing with their lip to the mic.

hahaha, right okay, Leona Lewis has the POWER to stand away from a mic and still get a completely compressed, level frequencies, clean sound, where EVERYONE else would fail.
Why don't you buy an SM58 and try that for yourself? It doesn't matter if you're a shit or AMAZING singer, the moment you take your top lip off the mic, it gets tinnier in frequency.
Most singers performing live mime, especially if they're good looking because it allows them to step back and not have their face obscured.

Watch at about 1:57, when she sings AWAY from the microphone, her face is nowhere near and yet there is no change in frequency, compression, or "volume" (technically loudness).
Also, around the 3:04 mark there is a string of lyrics where she is obviously miming out of time with the music.
And when she's warbling around 4:00, she moves right away from the mic, again without change in frequency, compression, or loudness.

I named the SM58, which IS an industry standard microphone. Having said that, ALL dynamic microphones have the same flaws which I named, and that somehow aren't present in this video.

I've also performed hundreds of gigs around the North East, and usually I'll use an SM58 microphone, or similar, and always if you step back from the mic, the frequencies change to be more top end (treble), due to dynamic mics having very little bass response unless you're literally kissing it.
Also, belting does not help that, if you've EVER sung into a dynamic microphone then you should know that.

Not all mics, just dynamic mics, and she's using a dynamic mic. The only vocalists who generally leave a space are the pretty vocalists because they'll earn more money if their face is not obscured, and they also mime generally speaking. Also in music videos generally you leave a space.

As for theatre performers, they'll be using condenser microphones, not dynamic microphones. I've mic'd up the Cleveland philharmonic orchestra on occasion, and we always used condenser microphones for our recordings. C1000s, Rode NT2s, Sontronics STC2s, et cetera, not SM58s.
Now, back to Miss Lewis, she's miming, and you are in out of your depth arguing with me. I've already proven that it's mimed by running it through music software. Download Audacity if you want to see it.

I thought you said you knew what you were talking about? She's using an SM58, I can see that. Type in Dynamic mic on google images, and then type in condenser mic, and tell me which one she is using. Dynamic mics are the ones I'm talking about where if you step back the frequencies change.
Do you think the Queen cares if someone mimes? It's probably safer as there are no fuck ups if you're miming, and the sound can be pre-mixed to sound perfect. Also she can stand back and look pretty.

I'm not one of the iPod generation, I refuse to buy one. I barely even use MP3, most the time it's AIFF, FLAC, or when I do use MP3, it's almost always 320 kbps, or at the very least 256 kbps. I also own a vinyl player, and around 250 vinyls.
The loudness, or 'volume', does NOT change, I just ran this performance through logic, and it's perfectly compressed. And there is no change in loudness either, it's not just my hearing that says so.
Who mentioned the doppler effect? Shut the fuck up!

I think Leona might even be spinto. I like both singers but its pointless to compare in the respect that one can go higher or lower than the other.
