why does everyone say depth perception is possible because we have two eyes? I know a couple people who were BORN with only 1 functioning eye and they have great depth perception!!

Your friends with one eye don’t have depth perception, but the brain is good at making assumptions. If we close one eye, the brain starts guessing using “clues” like occlusion, vanishing points, etc. Try switching between using one eye and two, notice the differences. I have shown illusions to people with only one working eye. Some illusions are impossible for them to experience, like holograms, anaglyphs, and suchlike.

@jmccuen “Depth perception” and “stereoscopic vision” are not synonymous. Patients with monocular vision do not have nearly as good depth perception due to their complete lack of stereoscopic vision. However, there are many other cues their brains integrate in order to produce at least some depth perception: atmospheric haze, occlusion by other objects, lighting, accomodative focus of the natural lens, etc. Ultimately though none of them are as objective or effective as binocular vision.

@jmccuen the reason that i heard that we have depth perception is because our eyes face forward. it is called binocular vision and only humans and primates have it. it is basically where your eyes are on the front of the skull instead of the side like most animals. that is also why primates are able to judge which branch they can reach when they jump.

Quite honestly I don't think it would work in real life, because in real life you have two eyes and that give you a sense of depth, so it would just look like what it really is, and not a cube. Unless you use a pseudoscope of course, but that kind of ruins the point of the cube illusion, doesn't it?

Our depth perception suggests that it is hollow, but curiously our brain can still perceive the three dimensional cube with two eyes. Especially at far distances, the disparity between left and right eye gets smaller, so the illusion is easy to see in real life.
