@ryohayashi No, there were a lot of female Kunqu actresses from the very beginning (600 yrs ago, Ming Dynasty). I think it was until the formation of Peking Opera in Qing Dynasty that no female were allowed to act (Qing Dyansty is well known for its harsh restriction anyway). Also, for other recently formed operas such as Yue Opera (100 yrs ago), there was no such restrictions (even females can play male characters, yay~).
@ryohayashi For me, Kunqu is kind of the most normal looking opera - females play females, males play males. BTW, although this is rare these days, in the past, a lot of male Peking Opera actors also played Kunqu (since Peking Opera is a descendant of Kunqu, technically speaking).
Kunqun is about singing and body language, the camera man obviously didnt know abt dat. only focusing on head making the whole art form into a MTV.... personally, it is a waste
Wow You saw her live performance? I have never watched any other operas live except Yueju opera. I'm not an expert on Kunqu.One year ago I was fascinated by Peony pavilion and fell in love with this beautiful art. I don't know if she sings well? I just love her costume and sweet voice.

Yes,that's the typical make-up and costume for Kunqu Opera and some of the other operas.
I like your profile picture, she seems to be a Peking opera actress.
