Someone like Ricky Martin, Carlos Ponce, albeit Puerto Ricans differ completely from the likes of say Rosie Perez, Roberto Clemente who themselves are Puerto Rican. Same nationality but are racially different. The only original Puerto ricans are the taino(think I spelled that correctly) natives. The ONLY reason they have 'white' skin or 'black' skin is that either those tainos mixed with the African slaves that were dragged half way across the world on a boat or the mixed with the Europeans that brought them over. Many Blacks have european ancesry to some degree that is why the comlexion range among blacks is so broad. The point is that many times when someone has a mixed backgound that includes African ancestry they try to distance themselves from that while clinging to the European or other ancestry that they may have. And replying to your question, I have been conscience since about 15. I took it upon myself to educate myself on the people from which I am from, my parents did not inform, nor did any elders. It was the ancestors that brought me to our story.And what is Nigeria like? To sum it up, on one hand it represents the beauty of African culture and spirit, but it also is a place that represents what is wrong with so many African nations and that is fuc*ed up governments.

We do have our own identifications system based on Pride in our Indigenous roots (whether they be African or American Indian or both) as well as our Nationality.
