That may be true on your continent, but over here in North America we have higher emissions restrictions that require more stringent controls (including in some cases exhaust gas urea injection to burn off soot).
You'd be hard pressed to find a modern smoking diesel here.
Now having said all that, you folks get all the good engines, and we North Americans get what's left.
@tsurmann I like diesel as well, but I'm afraid that's an erroneous fact. You see black smoke from just about every modern diesel under specific circumstances. I've seen black smoke from VW Passats, hundreds of Skoda Octavias (taxis mainly), Vauxhall vectras (cdti and dti), BMW 730d, my Grandad's A4 3.0TDI.... Even if you look carefully at the tv coverage of lemans this year, you'll see plenty of smoke when the diesels pass under the Dunlop Bridge and leaving the pits. Even the ultimates smoke!
Of course 335i... Real engine must have least 7000 rpm... Petrol power forever... Diesel belongs to stove... For example: ///M3 has real engine - no black smoke, no boring sound, just 8000 rpm, 420 HP and beautiful sound... But otherwise I love all BMWs :-)
@fubecabr I know, because diesel is more economical and it is important for endurance racing... By the way - technical rules for Le Mans LMP1: N/A petrol engines - max. 3400ccm or 2000ccm with turbo, diesel 3700 ccm with turbo... Can you see difference? Diesel may have 80% higher content than turbo petrol engines and 10% higher content than N/A petrol engine... Practicaly many more than 10% content, because diesel engine is turbocharged... Finally - I like petrol, you like diesel. The end...
I like petrols and diesels. For a car, I prefer a high-revving petrol engine with a 6 speed manual tranny. For a truck, I like a diesel.
Yes, the rules for Le Mans are different for diesel and petro. That's because liter for liter and kilo for kilo, diesel is at a distinct disadvantage for specific power output and power to weight ratio, especially if the diesel doesn't have a turbo.
@fubecabr Very good, exactly as you say. And that is the reason, that diesels must have benefits. Because they are heavier and less powerful than gasoline engines with the same content. So, if we had the same rules for diesel and petrol, so diesel is no chance... My opinion...

@snip84 More torque does NOT mean more performance. Two cars of equal power will perform identically provided they are both kept within their power bands.

I really don`t know what to choose among 335d or 335i if it costs the same price. each engine type has its unique advantages but diesel is away more expensive
335i sounds awesome. My dad has a 335d and it certainly shifts. Although sounds like a tractor on start up, has a pretty good engine noise for a diesel, and 35MPG!
nice i`d take the diesel...IT IS FAST ENOUGH :D i believe it has the same engine like the 535 that was on top gear compared to the 545...anyway it is a good allround engine...with a remap you get 359 ps/747 torque :D..a lot of torque and faster than the 5 series and i don`t think that 45 kg difference are that much in everyday use, what if i have 90kg or i have 60? and if the tank is full or not...now this are just theories for a circuit not on road
@weed46 hahah, the 335d i 0,4 seconds slower from 0-100 kmh, and it weighs only 45 kg more! Check out the facts before you write Mr., cant call that way faster and way lighter!
@rhoydal If knew anything about cars you shlud know that those 45kg are quite a lot, because they aren't in the center of gravity of the car, they are in the front, making the car understeer more. And more wight in the front also steals some of the sttering feel as well. and if you reprogram the ECU, or even more hard tuning, the petrol car can achieve much higher power output. Not to mention engine response and Sound
A shame this turned out to be an stupid testasteron discussion when it was meant to be a nice comparison vid of two awesome BMW's. I tried driving them both and now own the 335i DKG chipped to 383hp (550nm). Here some facts:
1. The 335i stock is faster (but not much)
2. Turbo engines (no matter if diesel or gasoline) are the easiest to tune.
Buy one and chip it !!!!! With DKG you have launch control - fantastic feature.
why did u put Vs in title, theres no versus anything here in this vid , and reving the diesel at start :) lol please dont do that u will scare the old people still respecting it ;)
it's easy for the 335i because he have 306hp, whereas 335d 286hp. But if he have a 335i 286hp and 335d 286 hp. Diesel win. it's just because the diference of HP!
so you believe, when you own a 335i you are going to be going for a 1/4mile record every time you set off? and that there is going to be a 335d next to you every single time with a boy racer driving that as well.. lol, if you live in the world of gran turismo then i see where you're coming form, other than that.. who gives a shit! this vid was to prove how far diesels have come, cant you see that?!
Wel the reason you buy a high performance car like these is for power delivery. The 335i does this best. Also when you bring the 335i to trackdays you can blow away the 335d. 335i is also easily tuned as it has been limited alot by bmw to seperate it from the m3. Just add a jb3 for 300 dollars and you've got an extra 80wbhp. Spend 300 on the diesel and your still getting nowhere. For 1000 you can have the 335i passing 420wbhp. The diesel could never do this
Well they do, a simple remap will see a 335d make 360 rwhp and thats not bad for a "dirty old diesel". anyway iv had Alpinas, M3''s, skylines scoobys etc..and i prefer a good diesel as an every day car.
I have an 06 r32 golf mkv and an 07 335i with jb3, dual cone ingen intakes, catless downpipes and a custom intercooler. r32- 310 bhp... 335i 420wbhp+. It leaves the e92 m3 in its dust. So yes I've had a driving licence 6 years.
nope because there is a newer model coming out too soon. How can someone with a 30000 euro vw and a 70000 euro bmw at 23 years old be cheap. You jealous shit. Stick to shity scrap boyracer skylines and slugish diesels.
why do you talk in dollars and now in euros, when you claim to be from the UK? no need to answer it was a rhetorical question, ps where do you keep these motors.. on XBOX live???
"a university lecturer in dublin" we would call that a man sitting a room talking to himself... how ever, Its evident you are full of crap, and as fun as this has been, ok i say fun i mean futile.. nuff said.
I have had the mkv r32 since i was 19. It's being sold privately! The 335i was a nice upgrade so it doesnt annoy me what you say... butttttt.... I bet your car at 19 wasnt so quick or brand new. And im not bothered if you say an already tuned out version of the 2.0gti will beat my 3.2.... I know it wont. Plus my r32 can be tuned alot easier than the 2 litre... I have only one lost a race in the r32 and that was to an e92 m3... Ive raced the same guy in the 335 and left him leghts behind
-The 335d is slower, just ask BMW or read their stats
-The 335d has no mods that can make any real difference in hp
The 335i can go from 0-60 in 4 seconds for under 2000 dollars.
An additional 80+ wheel hp can be added for 395 dollars
Anyhow why are you driving a poor mans audi...lol... and a tractor of a thing at that.... Who the hell cares how an old jeep performs. Plus they are ugly as hell. You should have saved for an x5 atleast.
You talk about the torque as if it has made a difference. The 0-60 time of your farmer mobile is 6.7 seconds.... Same as a 325i. When you get 0-60 in 4 seconds let me know. ha you make it too easy
And you bought another diesel. lol ha. Point proven,,,, You could have bought a petrol model but you couldnt afford to run it once again. I have a phd in Science and engineering so don't even bother arguing about missing lessons! When you get some quality education I will continue talking to you. And you bought a Touareg. lol Are you a bloody farmer.... Only a farmer would buy a diesel. No matter how much you tune the Touareg you still look like a farmer.... Go suck some cow tits
because 335d comes with automatic transmission and 335i has it like option that costs 3000 euros. Add a auto tranny to the petrol model and you have a retail price higher than the diesel model.
335i 0-62 in 5.5 seconds vs 335d 6.1 sec.............................. The 330i has the same accelleration as the 335d... 335i is in a different league especially when it comes down to tuning. How many diesel racecars do you know of vs ammount of petrol. Its ok if your into saving money and all with diesels but if your a driving enthusiast with the cash a diesel engined car wouldnt enter your mind. Id take a 325 or 330i before the 335d
You can claim to have as much torque as you want, it still wont make it quicker than the 335i. With just a tuning box 300 euro the 335i can produce 400 bhp. Add downpipes and an intercooler and your talking 450. So stock vs stock 335i wins and tuned vs tuned 335i sweeps the dirty diesel off the track. The 335d is more expensive new as the cheapskates will save overtime on fuel costs. When money is not an issue its the petrolall the way.
In the real world, 335d is faster than 335i. On a 600 mile trip, both cars will be going at about the same speed, providing about the same level of performance and comfort. However, while 335i driver will have to stop at the gas station, 335d will keep going...
how often do people go on a 600 mile trip i'in the real world'? nonsense. Diesels are for those without the cash for as. petrols are for power and speed loving car fans.
What a stupid comment. The petrol engine of the same size will have more horsepower EG 2 litre petrol vs 2 litre diesel.. Diesels are noisy tractor engines for cheapskates. Your comment is like saying 200kg of sand is heavier than 200kg of feathers.
Once in a few months, if you live in USA... I go visit my family for holidays, for example. And this is really a short trip - i'm planning a 3,000 mile trip early next year. I bet my 2010 BMW 335d will make it faster than most other cars, from Veyron to Prius lol.
Diesels are for those without cash? Considering diesels cost MORE than gasoline equivalents and they cost more in maintenance (i.e. need more oil and lubricants).
Buying a diesel car is an investment. Your investing in the reliability and longetivity of the engine as compared to a gasoline engine. The engines are made larger and stronger to support the much higher pressures that occur on start up and inside of each cylinder.
Think before you post such an arrogant statement next time
I agree plus the resell ability of diesels is better...
and.. compared (usually) with a "same power" petrol version, diesel has more low end torque wich makes them much better for everyday use and long trips....
only thing missing compared to petrol is the "sporty" sound but latest diesels are starting to have a more appealing sound as well...
Smart man here...even though I am a high revving gasoline engine lover there is no arguement that diesel engines are always more reliable stock for stock.
Well diesel gets a really bad name because of semi-trucks, dump-trucks, Ford and Chevy "dirty diesels". And it's true that these engines too, are reliable, but not many automakers are starting to make a performance oriented diesel...diesel has always been the workhorse engine.
Well I am apart of your "dirty diesels" but at the opposite end of this spectrum is the VW TDI's and this BMW TDI. Reliability is what you buy these engines for, not their acceleration. Oh and thier low end torque capabilities are a nice touch ;)
lol, dude you are talking on an empty head ! "Diesels are for people with out cash" Im pretty sure my 335d cost a lot more than what ever the fuck you drive!!
dude, if there were two of you, you would still only be half an idiot... ask your mother to explain what i said to to you... coz lord knows its beyond you're grasp...
wel what im saying is: the only reason you would want a diesel is because you cant afford to run the higher perfoming petrol model.... Give me a better reason why you would buy the diesel 335... one not related to running costs!
apologise for the delay, philyfree-been busy. I took the 335d as i do a 1000 + miles a week and I prefer torque over raw bhp, trust me you're obsession with stats mean practically nothing in the real world, when you grow up you may realise this.
Has more torque but is slower. How do stats not make a difference in the real world? Its fact that the 335i is quicker in every gear. So you grow up and accept that.
you asked why pick the 335d other than running costs, i told you when you have to drive a car for hours every day, you dont want something to have to cane the shit out of to make decent progress, and stats dont mean shit as, a car can only go as fast as the drivers skill level will allow, and i dont mean in a straight line with no other traffic. why do you have such a hard on for 335i's? Its just a nazi squad car after all.
diesel is cool but i now the BMW engineers are working on a project called dies otto . which is going to be gasoline compression ignition turbo direct injection. This new engine will have the torque of diesel and the RPM of gas engine will be able to run lean like diesel also it will be interesting times making otto cycle old fashion
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
its like comparing a tractor to a jet. Diesel cars are not made for speed. There just for those who cant afford to pay for petrol. Dunnno why anyone would want a noizy old diesel.
Diesel engines routinely out perform similar capacity petrol engines in bhp, torque, top speed and the 0-62mph test so beloved of us all.
OK, Turbocharge a petrol of similar capacity it might prevail, but given that no such engine is available from the same manufacturer it's a hypothetical point of yours. The problem with diesel now is that the fuel is pricey in the UK and the cars do require very prescriptive servicing.Diesel cars are quick and delightful to drive. Go and test one fo yourself
Man i can tell you in Germany, a Diesel inline 6 turbo can outrun and turn a V8 Petrol in to a pile of shit. But only BMW, Audi, Merc. I am not shure about other brands. The only downside is the clicky noise that comes from the engine.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I´m with you, diesel sucks and I hate to see people with diesel "sportcars"; that´s nonsense, if you want economy buy a small petrol or diesel(if you don´t like cars), but don´t try to save money with a sport car, idiot.
You're wrong. The 335i is also twin turbocharged. The difference between the engine layout is that the 335d has two turbos of different sizes, which are connected sequentially, whereas the petrol engine has two equally sized, small Mitsubishi chargers, each feeding three cylinders.
just pay for a jb3 and some downpipes on a 335i and it will smoke your alpina. M3's have proven to be faster than the alpina d10 yet a jb3 335i can smoke them
fuc* the extra torque. if i need torque i buy a truck. and round corners the 535d loses against the lighter petrol. thats it. sound makes more sense to me.
higher gear result in less torque to the wheel due to higher gear ratio. If you do the gear changes at 3200 rpm you use the area that has the most torque, but the torque to the wheel fall drastically as you more rapidly get to the higher gears.
Damn people are stupid.. Considering its Sporty, Luxurious, Sporty, Safe, Hanldes, Fast, and gets great MPG no shit its gonna be a hit. Look at BMW's sales (hence the 999% sales increase for the M3), and the orders of the 335d and you'll know that your negative opionion of the 335d doesn't mean shit.

Driving my 335i yesterday and pulled up next to a 335d at the lights, looked over and knew the fella driving from 2 yrs ago.
He started going on "why didn't I buy the diesel cos it's faster (not sure why, especially as he's over 20 bhp down)"
Anyway I caned him off the lights and was about 30-40 metres ahead before we got stuck behind traffic.
Then we pull up next the each other and he's looking shocked. "How the hell did you get off so quick".
Didn't mention my double clutch transmission ;-)

@BobBooker123 hehe..good job. what's the standard power rating on your 335i?
silvergate3909 11 months ago
@silvergate3909 306bhp 400Nm torque and 0-60 in 5.2 seconds.
I have done a 0-60 in 5.0 seconds but probably wouldn't recommend it.
Put the DCT into manual-sport, pedal to the metal but don't change gear manually, it will automatically change gear when it hits the rev limiter.

nice i`d take the diesel...IT IS FAST ENOUGH :D i believe it has the same engine like the 535 that was on top gear compared to the 545...anyway it is a good allround engine...with a remap you get 359 ps/747 torque :D..a lot of torque and faster than the 5 series and i don`t think that 45 kg difference are that much in everyday use, what if i have 90kg or i have 60? and if the tank is full or not...now this are just theories for a circuit not on road

weed46 1 year ago
@weed46 hahah, the 335d i 0,4 seconds slower from 0-100 kmh, and it weighs only 45 kg more! Check out the facts before you write Mr., cant call that way faster and way lighter!
rhoydal 1 year ago

More torque but tonnes slower. The 335d lacks the needed hp. Dont even compare a dirty diesel to the m3.
philyfree 2 years ago
so you believe, when you own a 335i you are going to be going for a 1/4mile record every time you set off? and that there is going to be a 335d next to you every single time with a boy racer driving that as well.. lol, if you live in the world of gran turismo then i see where you're coming form, other than that.. who gives a shit! this vid was to prove how far diesels have come, cant you see that?!
datssumfunnyshit 2 years ago
Wel the reason you buy a high performance car like these is for power delivery. The 335i does this best. Also when you bring the 335i to trackdays you can blow away the 335d. 335i is also easily tuned as it has been limited alot by bmw to seperate it from the m3. Just add a jb3 for 300 dollars and you've got an extra 80wbhp. Spend 300 on the diesel and your still getting nowhere. For 1000 you can have the 335i passing 420wbhp. The diesel could never do this
philyfree 2 years ago
Well they do, a simple remap will see a 335d make 360 rwhp and thats not bad for a "dirty old diesel". anyway iv had Alpinas, M3''s, skylines scoobys etc..and i prefer a good diesel as an every day car.
Not as a track day car.
datssumfunnyshit 2 years ago

And im not bothered if you say an already tuned out version of the 2.0gti will beat my 3.2.... I know it wont. Plus my r32 can be tuned alot easier than the 2 litre... I have only one lost a race in the r32 and that was to an e92 m3... Ive raced the same guy in the 335 and left him leghts behind

philyfree 2 years ago
-The 335d is slower, just ask BMW or read their stats
-The 335d has no mods that can make any real difference in hp
The 335i can go from 0-60 in 4 seconds for under 2000 dollars.
An additional 80+ wheel hp can be added for 395 dollars
Anyhow why are you driving a poor mans audi...lol... and a tractor of a thing at that.... Who the hell cares how an old jeep performs. Plus they are ugly as hell. You should have saved for an x5 atleast.
philyfree 2 years ago
First of all the type r has no hp. Thats what makes it slow. Where are all these videos you speak of where the 335d beats the 335i?
philyfree 2 years ago
You talk about the torque as if it has made a difference. The 0-60 time of your farmer mobile is 6.7 seconds.... Same as a 325i. When you get 0-60 in 4 seconds let me know. ha you make it too easy
philyfree 2 years ago
And you bought another diesel. lol ha. Point proven,,,, You could have bought a petrol model but you couldnt afford to run it once again. I have a phd in Science and engineering so don't even bother arguing about missing lessons! When you get some quality education I will continue talking to you. And you bought a Touareg. lol Are you a bloody farmer.... Only a farmer would buy a diesel. No matter how much you tune the Touareg you still look like a farmer.... Go suck some cow tits

bebopmoptock 2 years ago
it's diesel. and has better fuel economy
mcorpus01 2 years ago
335i 0-62 in 5.5 seconds vs 335d 6.1 sec.............................. The 330i has the same accelleration as the 335d... 335i is in a different league especially when it comes down to tuning. How many diesel racecars do you know of vs ammount of petrol. Its ok if your into saving money and all with diesels but if your a driving enthusiast with the cash a diesel engined car wouldnt enter your mind. Id take a 325 or 330i before the 335d
philyfree 2 years ago

However, while 335i driver will have to stop at the gas station, 335d will keep going...
mitua604 2 years ago 9
how often do people go on a 600 mile trip i'in the real world'? nonsense. Diesels are for those without the cash for as. petrols are for power and speed loving car fans.

Diesel have the binary that petron cant make.
"Horse power sell cars, torque win the races" ;) put a 200hp diesel vs a 200hp petron on the same car and you see who wins
kal12345 2 years ago 2
What a stupid comment. The petrol engine of the same size will have more horsepower EG 2 litre petrol vs 2 litre diesel.. Diesels are noisy tractor engines for cheapskates. Your comment is like saying 200kg of sand is heavier than 200kg of feathers.
philyfree 2 years ago
But 2.5L engine diesel will consume less then 2.0 petrol.
Keep your petrol.ill take a diesel anytime

Once in a few months, if you live in USA... I go visit my family for holidays, for example. And this is really a short trip - i'm planning a 3,000 mile trip early next year. I bet my 2010 BMW 335d will make it faster than most other cars, from Veyron to Prius lol.
mitua604 2 years ago
Diesels are for those without cash? Considering diesels cost MORE than gasoline equivalents and they cost more in maintenance (i.e. need more oil and lubricants).
Buying a diesel car is an investment. Your investing in the reliability and longetivity of the engine as compared to a gasoline engine. The engines are made larger and stronger to support the much higher pressures that occur on start up and inside of each cylinder.
Think before you post such an arrogant statement next time
Big2000Powerstroke 2 years ago
I agree plus the resell ability of diesels is better...
and.. compared (usually) with a "same power" petrol version, diesel has more low end torque wich makes them much better for everyday use and long trips....
only thing missing compared to petrol is the "sporty" sound but latest diesels are starting to have a more appealing sound as well...
mosquiton001 2 years ago
Smart man here...even though I am a high revving gasoline engine lover there is no arguement that diesel engines are always more reliable stock for stock.
Sevenstringster 2 years ago 3
Thank you! Everybody i seem to talk to always think of diesels as their 1970's counterparts...falling apart at the slightest pothole.
Big2000Powerstroke 2 years ago
Well diesel gets a really bad name because of semi-trucks, dump-trucks, Ford and Chevy "dirty diesels". And it's true that these engines too, are reliable, but not many automakers are starting to make a performance oriented diesel...diesel has always been the workhorse engine.
Sevenstringster 2 years ago
Well I am apart of your "dirty diesels" but at the opposite end of this spectrum is the VW TDI's and this BMW TDI. Reliability is what you buy these engines for, not their acceleration. Oh and thier low end torque capabilities are a nice touch ;)
Big2000Powerstroke 2 years ago 3

philyfree 2 years ago
apologise for the delay, philyfree-been busy. I took the 335d as i do a 1000 + miles a week and I prefer torque over raw bhp, trust me you're obsession with stats mean practically nothing in the real world, when you grow up you may realise this.
datssumfunnyshit 2 years ago
Has more torque but is slower. How do stats not make a difference in the real world? Its fact that the 335i is quicker in every gear. So you grow up and accept that.
philyfree 2 years ago
you asked why pick the 335d other than running costs, i told you when you have to drive a car for hours every day, you dont want something to have to cane the shit out of to make decent progress, and stats dont mean shit as, a car can only go as fast as the drivers skill level will allow, and i dont mean in a straight line with no other traffic. why do you have such a hard on for 335i's? Its just a nazi squad car after all.

its like comparing a tractor to a jet. Diesel cars are not made for speed. There just for those who cant afford to pay for petrol. Dunnno why anyone would want a noizy old diesel.
philyfree 2 years ago
Diesel engines routinely out perform similar capacity petrol engines in bhp, torque, top speed and the 0-62mph test so beloved of us all.
OK, Turbocharge a petrol of similar capacity it might prevail, but given that no such engine is available from the same manufacturer it's a hypothetical point of yours. The problem with diesel now is that the fuel is pricey in the UK and the cars do require very prescriptive servicing.Diesel cars are quick and delightful to drive. Go and test one fo yourself

Just to let you know. The 3.0 inline 6 in the 335i is normally aspirated.
The diesel engine in the 335d is TWIN turbocharged.
So you cant really compare them.
If you were to twin turbocharge the engine in the 335i, you would probably get 350-450 bhp out of it.
adamY2K 2 years ago
You're wrong. The 335i is also twin turbocharged. The difference between the engine layout is that the 335d has two turbos of different sizes, which are connected sequentially, whereas the petrol engine has two equally sized, small Mitsubishi chargers, each feeding three cylinders.

higher gear result in less torque to the wheel due to higher gear ratio. If you do the gear changes at 3200 rpm you use the area that has the most torque, but the torque to the wheel fall drastically as you more rapidly get to the higher gears.
kjaks 2 years ago
!?!? why the early shifts!?
at least try to redline it a little before picking another gear.
