I think the director was trying to convey a certain kind of message. Maybe one of vulnerability. Also, a lot of the time when there is a visual of an adolescent boy being portrayed naked/half naked the message is vulnerability by sexualizing the imagine. Sexualizing something so innocent is taboo and wrong, thus what you see is unsettling.

At least that's what I get. This interpretation is taken from years of cinema studies on my part - so don't take my word for it. Its just what I see, lol.
