The goalkeeper is always at a disadvantage in a penalty situation, he has less time to react than a baseball player does when facing down a 100 MPH fastball. Just because he didn't get any of them this time doesn't mean the best goalkeeper in the world (then and now) can't save penalties.

A dream come true. I watched the match with my sister, her husband to be, his family, and my girlfriend at the time who'd never really been around soccer fans much. We as fans of Italy were indeed lucky to witness the 2006 World Cup team. Who knows if there will ever be a team as calm, composed and as dominant. To give up only two goals in regulation time (one on a questionable penalty call) is just amazing. What composure they had during these penalty kicks. 5 for 5 is just amazing and I will never forget who I was with or where I was when I was watching this. Simply amazing!

@ZlataNLeoN1. I agree with you about "facci cantare", but phrases such as "make us sing" or "sing victory" are not used in (American) english. Instead of directly translating into something that would not be understood, I decided to substitute with a clearer phrase--"lead us to victory". Another possibility would have been "win it for us, Buffon".

We as fans of Italy were indeed lucky to witness the 2006 World Cup team. Who knows if there will ever be a team as calm, composed and as dominant. To give up only two goals in regulation time (one on a questionable penalty call) is just amazing. What composure they had during these penalty kicks. 5 for 5 is just amazing and I will never forget who I was with or where I was when I was watching this. Simply amazing!

@PagsandRags Agreed, but they thought it was too easy in 2010 against Slovakia and only pressed in the last 20 minutes. If they played like that the whole game they would've dominated. It was unfortunate, but hey, there's always Brasil 2014 to look forward to. I love the Italian commentators btw, they are the best. I also hope Buffon makes a return in 2014, but I doubt it will happen.

im australian but this was an awesome moment, the italians deserved to win the world cup, with all the scandals in italian football everyone was saying italian football is corrupt and no good but they went and won it all, they even had a player in their team who was born on the same day they last won the world cup in 1982 ,alberto gilardino, who must have been like a lucky charm :)

A country like the US would never appreciate what winning a World Cup would mean. My family is from one of the poorest regions in Italy and this win literally lifted almost everyone there.If the US wins a World Cup, it would be weekend news.
