Also this theme....with its dramatic... deep sense of loss, doom and defeat would fit any human war..... Because every war that starts is a defeat for humankind.
Ran really is the quintessence of the frailty....brutality...sadness...folly...cruelty and nonsense of the Sengoku Jidai and of all human wars.... driven by an insatiable thirst for power and ambition wich in the end cause the fall of everything: families...countries...worlds... Kurosawa made a picture of what the past..present and future of umanity is and will be...at least if we will continue to be slaves of our istincts.
The scene where his mistress's kill themselves always makes me cry a little. The whole battle, or massacre scene really, is one of my favorite sequences in a film ever. This film is really important. It's important because it's one of the last times you'll ever get to see the work of full blown genius working with total creative control. You just can't find a film this large with that kind of scope that will allow it's director that kind of freedom anymore.
Eerrie...Haunting...Beautiful...Moving...Gripping...so many words that describe this piece. Thank you for posting. I just wish I can find the soundtrack to this favorite film of mine.
@2007friends I read somewhere that Kurosawa asked Toru Takemitsu to compose something like Mahler's piece. And it is obious that he was inspired by "Das lied von der erde".
Am I imagining things, or are there traces of the first movement of Mahler's 10th symphony in there as well?

My favorite film score. Takemitsu and Nino Rota are the two greatest composers in the history of film.

Thanks RabelaisPanurge, this was wonderful. Sounds a bit like a hommage to Gustav Mahlers "Das lied von der erde" (Der Abschied)

No martial sound effects could have been as powerful as this soulful music for the moonlight attack on Hidetora's stronghold.
This recording seems slightly flawed; the recording on my Criterion DVD is better.
