The end kind of made me mad too...Being pretty helps, but I know plenty of beautiful girls who have been cut because they were overtly rude, crude, or seemed dimwitted.

This is probably the most realistic depiction of recruitment I've seen on here. The reason the selection process is so hush hush is because, at least in my chapter, it's ritual. You can't just talk about it to anyone let alone PNMs. But they shouldn't be worrying about it anyway, everyone finds a house that fits them in the end.

When I went through rush in the 80s, I totally knew that's exactly what it was. Of course the prettiest girls have an advantage. Of course the rich or connected girls have an advantage. If any of these girls bothered to find someone in a sorority and talk to them (or attend a fireside, which I'm sure most of the dorms arrange/can arrange), they wouldn't be so "confused" about this whole process. There is only so much one meeting can give them - if they'd rather complain and snark about the process and their preconceived notions, fine, but they won't learn anything from that. Most of the girls I've met will happily tell a ton about the process.

I'm involved in so many other things on campus and my friends are not all in a sorority or fraternity. I have friends from so many different organizations, and so do all of my sisters. I don't know where the stereotype comes from that girls only join a sorority to 'but friends'.

Like I said, it's different at every school, but sorority life is something you really have to experience to understand. Fall of my freshman year, I refused to even give it a chance. I was really annoyed with the sorority girls at my school, but some of my friends joined and I saw how much fun they were having and I got a bid, so I decided to give it a chance.

Each chapter has its own personality and looks for different things in their PNM's. Our chapter looks way past looks and wants to get to know the real person inside. We do not want superficial girs, we want girls who are going to be fun, intelligent, involved, and devoted to the betterment of the chapter as a whole.

Greek life is different at every school, and I can't speak for Northwestern, because I go to a school with 1,500 students rather than 40,000, but it's not about paying for friends and finding a social blanket for most girls.

This "documentary" seems pretty skewed. Maybe this is how recruitment is done at Northwestern, but it's different at every school. Each chapter looks for certain features in those girls going through recruitment. Mostly chapters look for girls who are smart, have personality and will be dedicated to the chapter. By the way, the potential new members judge the sorority chapters too. It goes both ways, folks. I loved recruitment and I was happy with my choice.

I'm not stupid the very reason i didn't rush is because of some certainly shady things that went down between some sororities and fraternities not only at the college i attend but some neighbouring ones as well. So i know i can't stop you guys, but not everybody needs a blanket of social security to make it through college. My sorority life iin college was amazing and has followed me my entire life. I learned life skills and feel the whole experience was a positive event in my life. If people don't like the Greek system, it's more than likely they either A got cut from being in a good sorority, or B. have no clue what the hell they are talking about and have never been in the Greek system.

At University of Idaho, I rushed and I didn't feel they were as shallow as only basing acceptance on looks. At my school it seemed it was mostly based on grades and personality. As with anything, there is truth and distortion in this documentary. Apparently some houses rush on looks. In three years behind the scenes I never once heard that brought up in my house. We rushed everyone in our house and would NEVER have intentionally "hidden" someone on food duty.

Some sororities will put their least attractive members in the kitchen so that potential new members won't get a "bad" imppression of the sorority. It's important to remember that not ALL sororities do this though!

Clearly the brunette that says looks play a HUGE factor into admitting girls into a house is a member of one of the houses that DOES do that-but that's HER house, not mine (and no, I was not a member of the "lesbian" house - not true btw - or the "wasp" house - also not 100% true)

One more thing.....unless you are a theatre major around people with personalities, it is almost a must to join a frat or sorority at Northwestern because the social life is REALLY lacking (not true for everyone, but I'm just sayin...), and there are a lot of major, shall we say, "socially challenged/over-achiever" kids at NU that do nothing but study....so to meet people with other interests besides making all A's, I highly recommend trying out Greek life, and if you don't like it, drop out!

Recruitment really is about putting your best foot forward, because you only get around 30 minutes total to talk to girls that are (potentially) your sisters for life- good first impressions are a must. Again, you don't have to be the best looking girl in the freshman class, or even have the most expensive clothes. But if you look put-together and like you've put on your best clothes, sorority members will then be able to get to know YOU and not focus on your apperance.

If you come into a rush party looking like you just rolled out of bed, I can guarantee that you'll be cut from every single sorority.

What really interested me was the fact that they didn't talk about all of the reasons why sororities cut girls. They focused mainly on appearance. The truth is if you couldn't pull atleast a 3.0 in high school (some places 3.25) you will automatically be cut the first day. Also, no participation in activities will be a guarantee cut. Drama club, sports, dance, foreign language clubs, band. Anything that shows us that you didn't sit around for four years doing nothing.
