  • why do you need subtitles, just ask me!

  • He could of given some credit to Half-Life/Valve, but no matter, this test has served its purpose, and that is to attract attention.

  • Wat een sukkel dat kale mannetje met z'n "love interest" idee.

  • 9 min better than 99 hollywood movies

  • this guy could go places

  • Okay, this is awesome for a film idea, and his idea for how he wants the perspective to be done is genius. And the base storytype look being Half Life-esque is awesome. I only hope that when he is done with it, it doesnt look like Cloverfield did a year before.

  • Shame that he doesnt say thats its based from Half life but oke..

  • hoe komt Hollywood aan zijn nummer??

  • I made a POV helmet that works just like his. Its amazing. Watch my videos ;]

  • look at tim's face at 8 :29 loool

  • LOL!

check out the guy in the background at 0:40

  • okay so what is this whatsinthebox dot nl thing?

  • I think a lot of people missed the general reason for this film, This is just some guy showcasing his ability to make and animate digital pictures, Where he got his sounds or inspiration from dosent matter. And lets be honest, gasmask guys were just as such because those costumes are cheap and easy to make uniform.

  • why doesn't he just say "the sound effects are from half life 2".

  • You Do Realise That They Must Thank Valve For The Sound Files right?

  • Awesome! Thank you much for the upload and translations!

  • Come on people. Everyone is complaining that he didn't mention Half Life. 1st: It's a more or less 7 minute interview. 2nd: Look at the people talking and the audience. How much do you wanna bet, that none of them even heard of Half Life? And also: What the fuck is it with all this "Somebody had an idea earlier! That of course means nobody should ever use the same idea again!" With that thinking, 99.5% of books, music and films wouldn't exist. Even the fucking bible was based on older ideas.

  • @blackicede HE could have said: "Half Life was part of my inspiration and for anybody who doesn't know what Half Life is, it's a video game". Wouldn't have taken that long to say.

  • It was NEVER him, who made the film. it was valve and they paid these douchebags here to say it was their idea and keep this whole thing a bit cool

  • @DarkwalkerLuke then why is this filmed in the Netherlands ...

  • @DarkwalkerLuke Dude, you are 15 years old, don't say stuff you have no idea of.. cause it sounds lame

  • @sethismess

No, I'm 16. Just don't care about comments on YouTube and don't try to justify yourself. Please have your own opinion on the things as I do. It also is possible to change your mind so your opinion changes, too. You got that? Ok.

  • @DarkwalkerLuke

    uuh good one...?

  • @DarkwalkerLuke you are the douchebag, i live in this neighberhood where it's filmed. it is in 3 differtent parts of the city Nijmegen... but you keep on dreaming buddy...

  • @Koosiey You didn't read the comment which I wrote after the comment you are referring to, could that be?

  • On their website they explain that they have no claim to the sound effects from half-life. And it's not like the first person genre is copyrighted or anything. It's a great idea.

  • Thibaut is a douche, jealous as balls haha

  • if this guy was the director of avatar it was the best movie in history with the lowest budget ever!

  • Good work guys on getting this video for us!

  • .... why wont this dude say where he got the idea from? just say half-life already and stop saying that you came up with everything. [=/

  • It's an ARG at the current moment. Probably more. Sounds like the announcement or release is going to be October 20th, 2010. Aka 10 20 20 10. I suggest doing some googling on the series... there's 4 videos out right now.

  • Yeah I;d like to see this but subtitles dont work. Yes I read the descript clikced the link. Nothing happens. ALl that pops up is the url

  • Alright, but what... They made a website only for a test film(even though it is superb)?

  • Wow, the test movie had my eyes absolutely glued to the screen!!!! Every second of those 9 minutes were absolutely amazing.

  • Jealous of this dude, big time.

  • They should keep "What's in the Box?" as a short-film.

  • And maybe have different sequels, but not an episodic show/production or movie.

  • Their film will add more depth to the Half-Life continuum.

  • :-) it´s a copy of half life from valve and not a new idee...but it´s really good..y.eah

  • Since when does half life have a box?

  • it doesn't.

  • My point exactly...

  • Orange Box.... I also believe that they were close to releasing a diet version of Orange Box called 'Black' Box, but that never fell through. Maybe this creator was playing along those factors? You can definitely see the heavy HL2 influence!

In a perfect world, he would get together with Valve to conjure up a film!

  • I want to see the movie when its done its so good!!!

  • It's an interesting film... I'd like to see the entire thing.

What one used to call a "cliff hanger" & it creates curiosity & tension in the viewer.

    Good luck to these guys.

Hope they don't get ripped off... or talk too much about HOW they did it.

Giving away their secrets doesn't seem like the thing to do in this situation.

  • i got science, fiction and film.

  • ondertussen al bijna 2mil keer bekeken

  • Thank him for not writing the annoying, screaming, stereotypical damsel in distress into his script. I absolutely hate movies that do that. It's a cheap and over used gimmick.

  • Your princess is in another castle...

  • To see subtitles you have to enable them in the bottom right corner menu. Thanks.

  • all so dutch

  • What's in the box was interesting but to all those saying things about valve copywrites valve sorta works on the "as long as no greenbacks are involved we don't give the Burnt tip of a rats ass what you do,an if money is involved we want an equall usage profit share in simpler words VALVE ENCOURAGES CREATIVE FREE USE OF THERE COPYWRITED MATERIAL that's why hl2 mods are so many in number and easier to make than say... A mod for red faction or rainbow6

  • Valve respects their customers.

  • Valve pwns

  • This guy is better than PJ Balkenende

  • yo dude valve doesent care about copyright, like there are like 50 game mods based on their engine and they are cool about it, i think they admire other peoples work too with their principles

  • They do, they helped the player made mod CS turn into a full sellable game!

  • this guy can turn the film "avatar" into a 35,000$, 17 pizzas and 34 red bull film

  • What's in the box???

  • his d*ck. its so massive it shoots lazors when provoked.

  • ROFL

  • why didn't you say dick?

    why do you censor...

  • i dont speak dutch, but i didnt hear these punks once mention half life. whats in the box is a blatant viral half life trailer and essentially the intellectual property of valve. they want to be careful talking about hollywood or 20th century fox etc. not unless they want their arses sued.

as a youtube fan vid its fine.

  • You sir could not be more wrong. If you did a little research and perhaps paid attention you'd have noticed that he mentioned that the sounds and music were used because they were 'on hand', or in other words, easy to find and use. Also, as much as the test film resembles the Half-Life world, there are several key differences that seem to disprove the general thesis that this is a Half-Life video of any sort. For one, the 'plug-it-into-your-brain' handheld device that gave him that wicked HUD.

  • Well you did had the hazard suit which gave gordon freeman that wicked HUD.

  • @infernoacid Well, yes and no. The HUD was more gameplay mechanics as opposed to what Gordan really saw. But I acknowledge your argument.

  • u could've turned subtitles on ;)

  • Its more about that he did it. Not where he got his inspiration from. The tech.

  • Well the audio came from lost tv show which is owned by FOX. Fox is the ones who called them up and gave them the movie deal. So I guess we will see a future movie by them I hope its good.

  • the gasmask dudes where from halflife and most of the sounds where from it too, Valve wont do anything unless they take put their ideas in the movie

  • A ton of it also came from Half Life 2. I like how he didn't actually credit those sources.

  • 150 euros? What about the software he might of used? Legal?

  • Perhaps he didn't count that in the 150 euros. (he might have these software for many years, but only counted the money to create the additional stuff in this video)

  • So if it wasn't about Half life 2... then why on the bottom of the news headlines, it said "Biggest Accident since Black Mesa"...

  • It does?

  • Can't valve sue this guy, The film was great, but 99 percent of the audio comes from them, they need SOME credit.

  • possibly but then they would have to sue the purchase brothers to

  • No thats different, they told valve about the movie they are making, and the movie is entitled: Escape from city 17 and they tell the movie is based on half life, how can you even use that as an example? valve even told them they have to make more and that they loved it.

  • you're wrong. Those are the Purchase Brothers.

  • what?

  • PurchaseBrothers

  • Valve usually doesn't mind these things, I'm pretty sure most people refer to Valve as soon as they hear this, so they automatically get their publicity. Valve isn't as butthurt about people using their sources as Viacom or WMG.

  • Yes, I know that. Its funny their like: ye take it, we made so you can take it. But thats not whats irritating me, 50 percent if not more of the people who watch that, thinks he made everything himself.

  • yep, smart people on the internet are rare

  • Yeah, but you see, Valve aren't massive dicks, and actually like seeing fan videos.

And the guy even says he didn't make a lot of the audio.

As long as he's not really making a profit, there isn't really a problem.

  • fucking idiots do not hear anything from half life 2

  • i can almost understand them... im german

  • The subtitles link is dead.

  • it's working. just tested

  • If anyone deserves success, it's this man for this effort. He provides hope for anyone out there to knuckle down and produce knockout material.

  • Hij is er wel erg relax over =D

  • dude hl2 sounds cheetrz

  • it really is a great vid my mind was blown the whole time

  • For those who don't know how to activate subtitles, you just need to go over the arrow that points up. It's above the numbers of views and on the bottom right of the screen that you are watching

  • ah he is cute!!

  • Thanks for posting this!

  • Where is the subtitle????

  • i cant understand him

  • Haha, check zijn gezicht op 3:24 ongeveer... Echt zo van "Ach... doe ik effies"

  • Comment removed

  • im really surprised he didnt mention inspiration from HL2 because geez, this is on IGN under HL2 vids, its kinda like fan made, maybe if fox does want to do somethin with him he can direct a halflife movie or somethin

  • I completely agree, seeing as how one of the obvious news streams mentioned the incident regarding black mesa, lets not forget the obvious sound effects and the overall atmosphere, when I first saw this months ago, HL was the first thing that popped in my head. I have so much respect for him though, he deserves to make a movie about it. It is very reminiscent of Neil Blomkampf though, as far as his art direction and camera style.

  • Thanks for the subs

  • ich liebe diesen film!!!! die jungs sind echt klasse :D

  • waar is die ondertiteling dan? :P

  • subtitles plz

  • I just wish he had at least mention HL2 as some sort of inspiration or something. I don't know.

  • yeah

  • second it.... he really sould have mentioned half life especially the singularity effect which was overly shown on episode 1

  • whats that

  • those mothafockas didnt mention hl2

  • is sounded like the guy took all the the credit for finding the sounds

    what an ass

  • @SKAMANDO i agree he didnt even mention it AT ALL :( it wasnt his own idea the destruction of the tower is allso from halflife so it wasnt even his hole idea...

  • @juriaan92 The TV-show could also have told him not to mention anything about "half-life" since it would be a sidetrack and for someone who does not know anything about video games or "half-life" for that matter it would mean nothing. He says that he did not make the sound effects, that's good enough.

  • What really irks me is that he never once said that he got his sounds (all of them almost, maybe even every single one) from HL2...

  • I wonder why?

  • yeah me too

  • He's just soaking up all the attention, not giving credit where it's due. Seems conceited. He wouldn't have this kind of "vision" if it wasn't for HL2. But well done effects, nonetheless.

  • Idd.. it's very HL2..

  • half life 2 the movie roflmao XD

  • I enjoyed the short film but he should have mentioned that he took sounds from Half Life 2 and LOST. Also, the whole atmosphere is very HL2-esk. The European streets are awesome.

  • loool this is incredible really... must be an honor to be called by hollywood... one thing i noticed though... they use the "khhh" more than it is used in a normal arabic conversation :P

  • They can get sued by valve if they don't give credit....and they used alot of things for half life so valva could make big bucks

  • Valve COULD sue, but I don't think they WOULD. I've never heard of Valve suing someone because they made something in GMOD and put it on youtube, so I think Valve's thoughts on this would be more, "Wow that's awesome, how he used sounds from our game," and less, "Grr, he didn't mention us."

  • I think Valve will sue if this (by a miracle) becomes a hollywood production. So far it's just a fanfilm and that's homage but if he's going to make the film and profit from it (Hollywood or Holland)then Valve should sue. Im Dutch myself and he did a fantastic job but this is HL, you can argue that it's just an experiment but he should have mentioned where he got the concept from, especially when they started mentioning ''the girl'' side kick. Its as if Huijbregts (the bold guy) knew the source.

  • Why would Valve sue. He used the sound effects from Half Life in the TEST FILM. I'm sure if he made the actual thing he would his own made sound effects. This isn't Half Life, there is no mention of City 17 the Combine or anything like it. Yes there are the logos from Black Mesa and Aperature Science on the site but he's just using them to create more hype. If it does turn out to be Half Life then I apologize, but he claims he has an Original story.

  • you forgot to mention the citadel, also the singularity at the end. I'm not saying valve has a chance at winning a case, but as far as the test film goes, it is not an original story. It has half life written all over it.

  • In the test film, when the lights go off at 2:03, you can see "...since Black Mesa." in the bottom left of his CBI (Computer Brain Interface)

  • "Greatest single collapse since Black Mesa" is the full sentence.

  • He doesn't mention Valve, because this was just an experiment, to see if he could do the special effects himself. I'm sure he would use his own sounds and stuff when he starts making it into a longer film project.

  • Exactly! He didn't even expect that he'd get this kind of attention, never mind being called by 20 Century.

  • What software did he use to do the explosions, motion tracking and stuff like that. Was it 3DS Max?

  • yes and After effects

  • I find it odd. So much is like Half Life 2, even the second movie clip on his site called " Last Footage." I want to be excited if it is but I know I'll watch it even if it isn't.

  • Ship fires missile can you say over kill? Then they do not even kill him in the end?

  • they where going to but the sound thing stopeed them and that thing from the portal

  • its half-life 2 and he doesnt even mention it, Loser

  • It contains Half Life 2 sounds and ideas, it aint Half Life 2.. But i agree, he should have mentioned he borrowed sounds from Valve

  • Its not half life 2, its based on Half Life 2. He never mentioned it because they never asked how he even got the idea of the movie. At 1 point in the movie it says "Biggest disaster since the black mesa incident"

  • Give credit where credit is due, this movie is about HL2, possibly the seven hour war or its immediate aftermath

  • no credit to lost either....the music is from lost, he even has a hanso foundation logo on one of the sites....

  • I heard they were making a half-life video... I suppose the fps view is a testing of how they're going to put the movie in?

  • i like that he nevers mention valve in the hole thing not from the sounds the refrence and the fps view that he chose for the movie

  • Really? This whole movie has almost everything related to Half-Life, and he's saying he just wanted to make a random sci-fi movie for the heck of it?

There is definitely more to this than he is explaining.

  • hij voelt zich helemaal de man, dat hij deze film heeft gemaakt. hij laat zn vriend tim oliehoek niet eens uitpraten. wat een arrogante nerd.

  • Fabulous stuff, I really hope he gets the chance to make his film.

  • Ze hadden Oliehoek dr niet bij moeten zetten, die jongen had zelf alleen moeten praten over zijn half-life/film prject

  • He doesn't even mention half life! The combine and assorted equipment, the Black Mesa reference, etc. Surely he must give Valve credit.

  • thats what i was saying,i love his movie bit im a bit furious that he dosent show credit to valve

  • Citadel...

    Heb je het spel gespeeld?

  • ja half life 1 ,2 ,ep 1, ep 2

  • Nicee

  • What is the password for th site?

  • now wait a minute.. what about all the domains they opened up to also raise hype? theres like 6 domains i found that are related to the whats in the box video and half life... wtf

  • ... if you want to do something bigger (like serious large-feature movie), you will need some time for it.

During this you need eat, drink, pay electricity etc. ... and if you need it to be done in some time, you will need few more people. And time. And nothing is free. People. Time.

So 150 euro is pointless here, because it was done for fun, for free, in freetime.

But still cheesy test movie, i hope someone will give this guy a pack of money so he will go big! :)

  • i dont believe whats in the box is anywhere near over just yet

theres a new part btw, click to watch the high def video of the original, and theres a link underneath to a brand new video

    x

  • thanks, but dont give kisses to us man! unless you can prove you're a hot chick then its allrite;)

  • haha sorry habit

  • LOL OMG! xD

  • This guy owns. I really think he can make an awesome movie.

And all the people who say its a ripoff from Half Life, It was his idea, maybe he had been playing HL when he came up with this, but he shouldn't have to credit it or something.

  • The main source of the sound-effects are from a game --> Half life 2

** the voices are from the "civil protection"

    ** the area-voice (7:40) that is saying: "Warning.. 1 minute ..."

** the carrying of that black hand-weapon

  • the movie is really awesome but they shud hv at least given some credit to half-life2...i mean its all over the video!! the sounds, the effects, even the super-portal!! They didn't even mention it once in the interview.

  • I'm sure in near future they'd be able to add some sort of interactivity too. Otherwise action cinema is dying. Most movies are so lame comparing to video games these days.

  • I have been dreaming about first person perspective full feature film for years now. Only went to see Doom because I saw that FPS sequence in the trailer.

I am sure it will be a challenge but I believe a serious attempt on tributing the video games. Since most of the single player fps gaems are roller coasters anyways, a movie might do the trick.

  • no subtitles wtf?!

  • bottom right of the vid the little arrow put your mouse over it and click CC

  • can i ask why you all think he's arrogant, i mean i saw the film and it really was good!

so, i dont see your point!

  • i,m the teacher there

  • beetje arrogante jonge -.-

  • i got to the school where he went when he was 12

  • Can i touch you. :-)

  • not a single word about where he has the soundfiles or inspiration from. dumbass. arrogant idiot.

say you stole the idea from half life 2!

  • that would be advertising, you cant really make advertisements like that on our television..

and besides you (nor i) dont know what he has in mind for the longer version, this might look like a half life 2 ripoff (the soldier voices from hl1 btw) but we dont have enough info to say that now.

he might look arrogant, but that could also be his mannerisms, i sometimes to the same :P

  • sehr schwer für mich zum verstehen v.v aber schon mehr oder weniger verständlich x) ist übrigens n geiles video das mit der box!!

  • i wanna know what's in the box!!!!

  • i undre stood that love intrest nononononononopnononono you balled baster shut the mother trucker up
