  • still the best

  • It is bean in my City Sarajevo

  • Simply majestic <3<3<3.

  • I remember watching this in 1984, breathtakingly beautiful, passionately perfect performance by Torvill and Dean! This was burned into my memory forever.

    I never thought I would see it again--thank you--thank you--thank you!

The most incredible performance on ICE before or since!

  • Still, this many years later, the most beautiful Olympic Ice Skating performance ever. Just aboslutely perfect.

  • the only olympic event i have ever watched and its still fantastic

  • cant belive they didn't end up a couple, they are the best and my heros

  • Truly the skill and choreography here are beyond belief. And what a piece to dance to! I cannot stop watching the last 20 seconds - you have to see those moves to believe they're possible.

  • Torvill and Dean are hypnotising here. Such a beautiful dance :D

  • there must be 11 retards on here if they dislike this its perfect and nothing in the rest of my life in sport will beat it

  • How movingit is amazing how talented and close these two people are x

  • Well, here we are...almost 30 years later; and I swear that every time I watch this, I still get chills. How fabulous that they were so appreciated for being such a breath of fresh air that they could break the former Soviet lock on ice dancing. They were, and still are, the greatest!

  • absolute perfection, not out of time with each other once

  • Pure as ice, pure perfection. It brings a tear to my eye, it was the first Olympics I remember and what a way to remember it.

  • 27 év után is azt mondom: ez már nem sport, hanem művészet. Most is tetszik, de akkor nagyon bejött

  • wowoowowowowonderful progamme this was i watch it and still feels as if it was yesterday

  • They incorporated many moves and steps that were new and unique and original, so much so that they were so overused by ice dancers later on that they had to ban the moves from competition. Dancers may no longer lie down on the ice during the performance nor is pulling a skater by his or her boot allowed. Those are the only 2 I remember, though.

  • Every time I see this performance I still want to applaoud at the end of it. Perfection!!!

  • Frigid and Faggott

  • @Noodles37UK Christopher Dean has been married and divorced several times, allegedly because he had affairs with other women hile on tour.

Or were you boasting about yourself?

  • Hehe

  • What a joy to relive this fantastic performance. The choreography alone is absolutely stunning, memorable and convincing.

  • True artistry on ice I seen this performance and it still holds me in awe

  • Comment removed

  • I´ve just 5hit myself

  • I watched this myself that olympic year and thought it was the most memorable skating event ever.

  • It is interesting that Peggy Fleming disagreed with the scoring T&D got and compared their LP to that of the couple who did win the gold. It was not a good day for skating.

  • Surely the most sublime performance ever in an Olympic Games final.

  • Made in England, perfection.

  • WHO THE FUCK DISLIKES THIS!?!?

  • @Mrcookiecrazy123 IDIOTS DISLIKE BEAUTIFUL ART AND TALENT

  • Still brings tears. After all the years. Perfection does that.

  • Wow! Even after all this time, it does not fail to thrill. Bravo!

  • Torvill & Dean are still the greatest.

  • @JNagarya absolutely!!

  • YES THE PERFECTION WAS NOT IS ALREADY LIVING FOR EVER WITH THIS VIDEO

  • Perfect.

  • Still as beautiful as ever! And still brings tears to my eyes when those 6s go up!

  • stunning...

    enough said

  • My son was only few days old when I watched this. Few minutes during this performance was probably the only time in my life I forgot I was a mother! Breathtaking and never again repeated!

  • I remember being 3 years old watching this with my Mom. When she cried, I knew it was history in the making. Seeing it 27 years later, Still, tears to my eyes. Perfection.

  • I saw this on live TV too, videotaped it and watched it til I nearly wore out the tape! I'm so glad to find this on YouTube! Now I can watch it whenever I want to. Uh oh, I feel tears. This is sooo cool! :)

  • Perfection!

  • Remembering the 1984 winning performance on ice - 27 years back time :-)

  • i think i ight go deforst the freezer and put some socks on, then lets see who wins a gold medal LOL!

  • wowowowowowowowowowowowo i watch this when it was on never 4get how much this moved me and always will

    heart warming

  • magical...

  • :O wow there well young there

  • oh my god! perfection! this still makes me tingle. is this the one we all in britain stayed up until about 3a.m. to watch live?

  • Perfect in every way. Such mesmerising artistry and grace. Balletic and gymnastic at the same time. This choreography ON ICE is just phenomenal. They really tell a story and are never a beat out of time with the fast paced tempo. This is pure magic. Body and mind in sync. I arree with HelenHish. It gives you goosebumps watching it. The best ever sporting moment.

  • I remember watching this live. My heart was in my mouth throughout it - even now watching it back i get tingles. Iconic.

  • often imitated never duplicated

  • LOVE IT! no matter how many times i watch this - i still get goose bumps! i wish i could be as good as them two!definitley one of the greatest sports moments in history, ABSOLUTLEY AMAZING!

  • Awesome!!!!

  • Such perfection! Of course they kind of spoiled it for everyone else ;>) I don't believe it can be equaled and, for sure, not surpassed!

  • @CATniteOwl

I believe the Olympics Comittee made a new Ice Dancing rule after this gorgeous performance, no more flinging yourself upon the ice. Sorry, too late, it was done, and it's astounding. The Beauty of skating has been taken away....especially in the pairs competitions. That's another story.....enjoy this.....

  • The individuals that run the sport of ice dance are like the individuals that run FIFA - back-slapping, small-minded, self-interested, toads. If this sport was run by people who actually cared about this sport, triple-spins by 13 year-old Chinese girls with no life would be seen for the artless, bone-grinding nonsense that it is!

  • This perfomance is timeless.

  • Love this, watched it as a child, they were brilliant. Zetra Stadium looked a lot different though from what it did in 1984 when I was there in 1996 with the British Army!

  • i don't even like ice skating but watching this still gives me goose-bumps .. the performance, the scores, the reaction .. utterly unforgettable ..

  • I never tire of watching them. They set the standard.

  • this was the ultimative ice-dance, it never will be beaten!

  • here here amazing performance

  • This is art in motion. Every move was like a brush stroke in the painting of a masterpiece.

  • so lovely !!

  • I remember my mother and I sitting up to watch this live. Happy memories :-)

  • I remember my mum staying up until about 4am to watch this!

  • i must see again,

  • are u mad?watch old judging, and tell me it is better?

  • I was an out-and-out tomboy as a kid, my heroes were cricketers and rugby players, but I will never forget being five years old, watching this, and wishing I had a purple dress and was Jayne Torvill.

I don't know skating, but what I do know is that this routine, even though it's over a quarter of a century old, still moves me, still leaves me in awe.

  • I love this routine, but I hate the crappy 80's Casio keyboard version of Bolero.

Music in the 80's had alot to answer for.

  • I remember seeing this - a truly magical moment in history.

  • The only unfortunate aspect to an otherwise great performance is the tinny arrangement of Bolero for what sounds like a cheap Stylophone.

  • Always had a passion for skating .. And i wonder why :)

  • This si Ice Dance - they were Great - even now for me they rest the first!

  • My friend's mum was ten when she saw this, she's in her mid 30s now (obviously) and she still says it's the most amazing thing she's ever seen in her life. This really is incredible. <3

  • @lilmisstoepix17

Your friend mother is my age. It amazes me how time goes by, that we now have kids of our own that are your age. The 80s were fun years.

  • @lilmisstoepix17 Feel like your friend's mum... (am about the same age, too) Will always remember this Olympic moment. So thankful that I could watch it again here on youtube.

  • most amazing routine ever. goosebumps everytime

  • I had no idea until now that they where English. England must be very proud to have had such amazing Olympians. I love watching them.

  • I don't think Virtue and Moir can even beat Torvill and Dean. These guys were great!

  • PERFECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The became the music. They were at one with the music.

  • T and D change figure skating for every after this it FAB i love it

  • I was 15 they were fantastic1

  • This Dance is amazing!

  • Like the music, they weave a spell & I'm entranced

  • Wow i really really REALLY want to skate like that. Right now i can only just skate and im 12

  • Just Amazing <3

  • Just amazing =) <3

  • I had the wonderful experience of seeing this live on tv. And when those 6.0's across the board came up, I'm sure my neighbors heard me cheering!

  • i just saw something about this on harry hill and i had to watch it pure class

  • Simply the best there ever has been in this sport. Jaw dropping performance that was appreciated even by the Soviet bloc judges - stunning!

  • I love watching the Olympics. There are moments that just stand out and they stay with you. This one of them for me - it's right up there with the 1980 US Hockey team's gold medal run. I held my breath during Torvill and Dean's skate and cheered like a madwoman at the end. I think I could be heard across the pond in Great Britain :-) A performance for the ages.

  • Amazing lifts.

  • They still can 'dance on ice' 26 years later......

  • You don't get ay better than this... You just don't. A true classic in every way.

  • yes, I remember this - and is and will always be my absolute favorite of all time - it was wonderful. Today's routines are good, but just don't seem the same somehow. Torville and Dean turned me on to skating and Bolero will always have a place in my heart.

  • Simply THE * GREATEST * SKATING * ROUTINE * EVER!!!!

  • Makes me wonder how that would be scored in the new system.

  • @bradhig not high. they lack some of the required elements that are now needed to score well in ice dancing.

  • wasnt he a policeman?

  • They were a rarity, and the rules WERE much more rigid (which is why this piece is so revolutionary - because Dean was able to build it entirely around all the loopholes he found in the rules), but I would have to say that the bar for technical sharpness is much higher; their form, though near perfect, is not quite as sharp as is demanded from skaters now. In an ironic sense, we have T & D to thank for bringing in the art - but also to "blame" for setting the demands for technical proficiency.

  • I largely agree, but I suppose, with less rigidity these days comes the opportunity to display much more 'technical 'sharpness' especially with the lifts and amount of space between the partners now allowed. I think routines look a bit less whole now and definately more 'pair skatey'. True mirroring of movement could be much more easily picked ot then and therefore penalised when it didn't happen.

  • @Autostade67. Yes, and one of those loopholes was timing. The full version of Ravel's Bolero lasts 17 min so they had it re-scored, but the arranger could not get it shorter than 4m 28s. The free dance must be 4m + or - 10s, so Christopher reviewed the rules and found the timing starts when skaters actually started skating. This is why they are on their knees at the start with skates off the ice. The timing begins when Jayne's blade first touches the ice 18 sec after the music starts.

  • I also saw it in 1984. I just watched it again after everyone in Vancouver had finished - and it is still without equal. The rules were much more rigid than they are today, and they are still better than everyone. If you've never heard this entire piece of music (longer than the 5 mins here,) please do. It is a beautiful, sexy piece of music!

  • I was fortunate to be in the audience at the World Championships in Ottawa when they won gold with Bolero. It was unbelievable. I was about 11 years old at the time, and was a figure skater, so I was in awe. I also got to attend a practice session earlier that week in which they were practicing their compulsary dance.

  • Either this or the 1994 OD Rhumba they did are the best ever in the history of figure skating.

They only took Bronze in the 1994 Olympics? SAD!!!

  • They only took bronze in the 1994 Olympics because of some rule change. They deserved the Gold there, too. I doubt any other ice dancers will ever equal T & D.

  • I heard the reason they were given a 0.2 penalty in their Technical Merit marks (when 6 was the perfect score) was for a 6th lift in the routine, the new rules permits 5. They were robbed though, yes. Better than the largely overrated Russians.

  • That routine hasn't and will never be matched. Truly amazing. Wish I could have seen it all those 26 years ago but unfortunately i wasn't born till another 6 years

  • Ah, what memories! I remember watching this live, 26 years ago; I would have been 15 at the time and was utterly mesmerised. It still gives me goosebumps to this day! I also watched this with my Mum and Dad, and when they won the Gold with all those 6s, it made me feel so proud to be English/British!

  • @BigBossCat - ditto for me. I was about 10 and my mother (a ballet teacher) made all of us get up at 3 in the morning to watch this live.

It's still amazing, and clearly puts artistry first (as it should be). Dean doesn't even use his skates until 45 secs into the routine. Pure and utter genius.

  • During my 67 years on this planet I have watched several Olympic dancing and skating competitions. I still say their performance is without a doubt the greatest of all time. I can only hope they have taught youngsters who have come after them. Theirs is a talent to be shared. They thrilled countless millions across the world that night.

  • I totally agree with you....they were a rarity! And we were honoured to have witnessed it at the time.

  • There has been nothing yet to match this. Whether you love physics, artistry, music, athleticism...this has it all. Still gives me chills.

  • You might like Boxing, rugby, football, athletics, or any othe sport, but this is one of the great sporting moments in history

  • I watched this live and STILL come to YouTube every so often to see it again. Perfection is right!

  • Did they choreograph it themselves??

  • lucymn1,

I believe Dean did all their choreography but I'm not 100% sure.

  • @lucymn1 yes, mainly by Chris. Not bad for a former police officer.

  • Perfection.

  • @whyjoin52, Yes They Did, they did all their choreography themselves!

  • amazing didnt you just want them to get married on ice and have ice skating babies!:P

i genuinly thought they were togteher!

  • this routine is fantastic, it's mesmerizing, they glide across the ice angelically, beautiful <3

  • fantastic! 26 years later and we still have positive and overwhelming feelings about their routine, wow!

  • That was fantastic. They are from Nottingham, my home town, which makes me even prouder.

  • I saw this live back then, and could have cried... the gracefulness, the beauty, it took one's breath away. And still does, after 26 years.

  • @georger64 it was magic i saw it live to, they could cleaned up the olympics for years after this but they went pro.

  • @georger64 I have to agree with you 100% I remember watching it live and being astounded at the beauty and as you say 27 years later it is still magnificent

  • Absolutely stunning! Beautiful skating to lovely music. I've been watching Dancing on Ice with my mum and she told me to watch this, glad I did! And they make it look so easy, wish I could skate like that!

  • I too watched this with my mother ( I miss her so much); thank you for this wonderful posting. 26 years later, it is still the most beautiful skating that I've ever seen.

  • I was 13een and my Mom said, "Don't leave, watch them". I was a boy, wouldn't know anything about icedancing!

But these great performance i enjoy.

  • So breathtakingly beautiful it can make me cry. Looking back on it from this distance in time, there have been some terrific ice performances since then, but none can equal it.

  • perfecto, el mismo maurice ravel estaria orgulloso de esta ejecucion

  • best i've ever seen ever , these guys are the king and queen of ice dancing SIMPLY AMAZING , SPINE TINGLING MUSIC

  • I have watch the winter olympics since the early 50's and this performance, in 1984 by Torvill and Dean, has always been my favorite. It was then, is now and ALWAYS will be, THE BEST performance EVER !!!

Breathtakingly Awesome. Thank you for posting it and allowing me the opportunity to see it again

  • Just want to clarify my comments in case someone though I was watching Ice dancing in the 50's. I know Ice Dancing was not a part of the Olympics until 1976, but it has been a part of world's Figure Skating since 1952. This was Ice DANCING at it's best. Talk about SPELLBOUND!!!

  • * PERFECTION !! *

  • 1st time cn dis icestaking at its best a well deserved gold medal wow just breath taking

  • Ice dancing does not get any better than this!

  • i was looking their performance on TV at

    that time.

it was so beautiful and marvellous!

  • I'm not an ice skater and even I can appreciate the beauty and perfection of that dance. Their synchornisation is phenomenal, absolutely breathtakingly mesmorising, couldn't look away fromt he screen.

  • It's so amazing! One of the greatest sportsmoments in history.

  • Can't take my eyes off them!! Lovely

  • Just beautiful. Moves me every time! (How could anyone rate the tech. at 5.9?!) Still amazing and still utterly awesome. :)

  • I wonder what would be harder not falling over or remembering every single move/step.

    sensational!

  • This was ice dance as it should be. Now with all the lifts, spins etc its far too much like pairs.

With 'dancing on ice' they are still able to pull of, all be it shorter, fantastic bits of skating. If I can still throw myself round the rink when I'm in my 50s I'll be very happy.

  • they are the best for ever

  • so beautiful,so perfect,I love t and d for me the best skaters

  • The new rules mean that each couple seem to come out & try to tick all the boxes. This makes their routines more like pairs skating, lots of very obvious elements with a bit of side by side skating in between. The exception to this is the Canadian couple Virtue and Moir. They have worked out how to incorporate the elements seamlessly into their DANCE routines. Check them out, particularly their 2008 worlds free dance, you have a heart of stone if you are not moved by that routine.

  • so romantic,so beautiful,so perfect,I love for ever

  • Sex on Ice. it's all I can say

  • the best skaters for ever

  • Oh, take my breath away!

  • I wish skating was still like this. I don't like the new rules, everything is pretty much the same. Watching this skate was a privilege, and I have never forgotten it.

  • Valentines Day 1984, remember watching this on TV, and 25 years later, got to see them do it live at Dancing On Ice 2009, I had tears in my eyes when the finished!

  • I still remember watching them adter 25 years!

  • Dittos, plus goosebumps, LyssaMayJellybeans! ;-)

  • this was the best ever. i might have been because i was high being a new moma. you were only a couple months old!

  • breathtaking! 25 years after it is still perfect:-)

  • such a beautiful dance!!!

  • Brings me to tears. Every. Single. Time.

  • Thank you for posting this. I will never forget being 18 and watching this breathless. It is still beautiful after all these years. Truly gifted artists and athletes!

  • I saw them skate this on their dancing on ice anniversary tour and i couldn't breath for the opening minute. absolutely unbelievable.

  • An AMAZING piece of history!

  • this is amazing!

does anyone know who the commentator is?! thanks xx

  • It is still spell binding even after so many years. So beautiful and moving! I am so happy that youtube allows us to be able to relive such classic moments again and again.

  • The perfect score says it all - it doesn't matter how many times I watch this, it always enraptures me. One of my friends recently remarked to me that they were like angels on ice that night, and I can't disagree with that!

  • mmmmm.....its ok.....i spose..........

lol, first time iv'e seen it all, it is pretty amazing, but no throws? or is that a new thing??

  • It's OK??? First time you've seen it??? How old are you???

It was absolutely revolutionary. No one had ever skated to one piece of music before. No one had ever died on the ice before, no one had ever started a programme kneeling on the ice before.

So much passion and intensity. 24 million people watched it on TV in the UK. Their scores would be like finishing Ice Dance today with 250.00 or 300.00 points. It changed skating until 2004 when the new scoring system brought new rules.

  • Even my fiance (at the time; I later divorced him) was spellbound, and he hated stuff like this!

  • This is ice dance, not Pairs Skating, so no throw jumps, only half a revolution allowed in a jump, restrictions on number of lifts and height of lifts.

As keithpl36 has said - this was a revolutionary routine. It changed the face of ice dance. Even the costumes were different!

  • throwing is illegal

  • There are no throws in ice dancing. In fact, ice dancing had just begun to change in 1984 to become more open to adaptation. Still, you aren't allowed to lift your partner higher than your shoulder and certainly not to do any throw jumps: that's for pairs skating. Things may have changed in the last quarter century, but I was skating with an instructor back then, so I know a little bit. Gosh, I miss it!
