I remember watching this in 1984, breathtakingly beautiful, passionately perfect performance by Torvill and Dean! This was burned into my memory forever.
I never thought I would see it again--thank you--thank you--thank you!
The most incredible performance on ICE before or since!
Truly the skill and choreography here are beyond belief. And what a piece to dance to! I cannot stop watching the last 20 seconds - you have to see those moves to believe they're possible.
Well, here we are...almost 30 years later; and I swear that every time I watch this, I still get chills. How fabulous that they were so appreciated for being such a breath of fresh air that they could break the former Soviet lock on ice dancing. They were, and still are, the greatest!
They incorporated many moves and steps that were new and unique and original, so much so that they were so overused by ice dancers later on that they had to ban the moves from competition. Dancers may no longer lie down on the ice during the performance nor is pulling a skater by his or her boot allowed. Those are the only 2 I remember, though.
Saw them do this live!!! Thrilling then, thrilling now. What people do not understand is that this was a break away from the traditional ice dance form back then......they set the stage for the ice dancing we see today.
It is interesting that Peggy Fleming disagreed with the scoring T&D got and compared their LP to that of the couple who did win the gold. It was not a good day for skating.
My son was only few days old when I watched this. Few minutes during this performance was probably the only time in my life I forgot I was a mother! Breathtaking and never again repeated!
I remember being 3 years old watching this with my Mom. When she cried, I knew it was history in the making. Seeing it 27 years later, Still, tears to my eyes. Perfection.
I saw this on live TV too, videotaped it and watched it til I nearly wore out the tape! I'm so glad to find this on YouTube! Now I can watch it whenever I want to. Uh oh, I feel tears. This is sooo cool! :)
Perfect in every way. Such mesmerising artistry and grace. Balletic and gymnastic at the same time. This choreography ON ICE is just phenomenal. They really tell a story and are never a beat out of time with the fast paced tempo. This is pure magic. Body and mind in sync. I arree with HelenHish. It gives you goosebumps watching it. The best ever sporting moment.
LOVE IT! no matter how many times i watch this - i still get goose bumps! i wish i could be as good as them two!definitley one of the greatest sports moments in history, ABSOLUTLEY AMAZING!
I believe the Olympics Comittee made a new Ice Dancing rule after this gorgeous performance, no more flinging yourself upon the ice. Sorry, too late, it was done, and it's astounding. The Beauty of skating has been taken away....especially in the pairs competitions. That's another story.....enjoy this.....
The individuals that run the sport of ice dance are like the individuals that run FIFA - back-slapping, small-minded, self-interested, toads. If this sport was run by people who actually cared about this sport, triple-spins by 13 year-old Chinese girls with no life would be seen for the artless, bone-grinding nonsense that it is!
Love this, watched it as a child, they were brilliant. Zetra Stadium looked a lot different though from what it did in 1984 when I was there in 1996 with the British Army!
I was an out-and-out tomboy as a kid, my heroes were cricketers and rugby players, but I will never forget being five years old, watching this, and wishing I had a purple dress and was Jayne Torvill.
I don't know skating, but what I do know is that this routine, even though it's over a quarter of a century old, still moves me, still leaves me in awe.
My friend's mum was ten when she saw this, she's in her mid 30s now (obviously) and she still says it's the most amazing thing she's ever seen in her life. This really is incredible. <3
@lilmisstoepix17 Feel like your friend's mum... (am about the same age, too) Will always remember this Olympic moment. So thankful that I could watch it again here on youtube.
I love watching the Olympics. There are moments that just stand out and they stay with you. This one of them for me - it's right up there with the 1980 US Hockey team's gold medal run. I held my breath during Torvill and Dean's skate and cheered like a madwoman at the end. I think I could be heard across the pond in Great Britain :-) A performance for the ages.
yes, I remember this - and is and will always be my absolute favorite of all time - it was wonderful. Today's routines are good, but just don't seem the same somehow. Torville and Dean turned me on to skating and Bolero will always have a place in my heart.
They were a rarity, and the rules WERE much more rigid (which is why this piece is so revolutionary - because Dean was able to build it entirely around all the loopholes he found in the rules), but I would have to say that the bar for technical sharpness is much higher; their form, though near perfect, is not quite as sharp as is demanded from skaters now. In an ironic sense, we have T & D to thank for bringing in the art - but also to "blame" for setting the demands for technical proficiency.
I largely agree, but I suppose, with less rigidity these days comes the opportunity to display much more 'technical 'sharpness' especially with the lifts and amount of space between the partners now allowed. I think routines look a bit less whole now and definately more 'pair skatey'. True mirroring of movement could be much more easily picked ot then and therefore penalised when it didn't happen.
@Autostade67. Yes, and one of those loopholes was timing. The full version of Ravel's Bolero lasts 17 min so they had it re-scored, but the arranger could not get it shorter than 4m 28s. The free dance must be 4m + or - 10s, so Christopher reviewed the rules and found the timing starts when skaters actually started skating. This is why they are on their knees at the start with skates off the ice. The timing begins when Jayne's blade first touches the ice 18 sec after the music starts.
I also saw it in 1984. I just watched it again after everyone in Vancouver had finished - and it is still without equal. The rules were much more rigid than they are today, and they are still better than everyone. If you've never heard this entire piece of music (longer than the 5 mins here,) please do. It is a beautiful, sexy piece of music!
I was fortunate to be in the audience at the World Championships in Ottawa when they won gold with Bolero. It was unbelievable. I was about 11 years old at the time, and was a figure skater, so I was in awe. I also got to attend a practice session earlier that week in which they were practicing their compulsary dance.
They only took bronze in the 1994 Olympics because of some rule change. They deserved the Gold there, too. I doubt any other ice dancers will ever equal T & D.
I heard the reason they were given a 0.2 penalty in their Technical Merit marks (when 6 was the perfect score) was for a 6th lift in the routine, the new rules permits 5. They were robbed though, yes. Better than the largely overrated Russians.
That routine hasn't and will never be matched. Truly amazing. Wish I could have seen it all those 26 years ago but unfortunately i wasn't born till another 6 years
Ah, what memories! I remember watching this live, 26 years ago; I would have been 15 at the time and was utterly mesmerised. It still gives me goosebumps to this day! I also watched this with my Mum and Dad, and when they won the Gold with all those 6s, it made me feel so proud to be English/British!
@BigBossCat - ditto for me. I was about 10 and my mother (a ballet teacher) made all of us get up at 3 in the morning to watch this live.
It's still amazing, and clearly puts artistry first (as it should be). Dean doesn't even use his skates until 45 secs into the routine. Pure and utter genius.
During my 67 years on this planet I have watched several Olympic dancing and skating competitions. I still say their performance is without a doubt the greatest of all time. I can only hope they have taught youngsters who have come after them. Theirs is a talent to be shared. They thrilled countless millions across the world that night.
@georger64 I have to agree with you 100% I remember watching it live and being astounded at the beauty and as you say 27 years later it is still magnificent
Absolutely stunning! Beautiful skating to lovely music. I've been watching Dancing on Ice with my mum and she told me to watch this, glad I did! And they make it look so easy, wish I could skate like that!
I too watched this with my mother ( I miss her so much); thank you for this wonderful posting. 26 years later, it is still the most beautiful skating that I've ever seen.
So breathtakingly beautiful it can make me cry. Looking back on it from this distance in time, there have been some terrific ice performances since then, but none can equal it.
I have watch the winter olympics since the early 50's and this performance, in 1984 by Torvill and Dean, has always been my favorite. It was then, is now and ALWAYS will be, THE BEST performance EVER !!!
Breathtakingly Awesome. Thank you for posting it and allowing me the opportunity to see it again
Just want to clarify my comments in case someone though I was watching Ice dancing in the 50's. I know Ice Dancing was not a part of the Olympics until 1976, but it has been a part of world's Figure Skating since 1952. This was Ice DANCING at it's best. Talk about SPELLBOUND!!!
I'm not an ice skater and even I can appreciate the beauty and perfection of that dance. Their synchornisation is phenomenal, absolutely breathtakingly mesmorising, couldn't look away fromt he screen.
This was ice dance as it should be. Now with all the lifts, spins etc its far too much like pairs.
With 'dancing on ice' they are still able to pull of, all be it shorter, fantastic bits of skating. If I can still throw myself round the rink when I'm in my 50s I'll be very happy.
The new rules mean that each couple seem to come out & try to tick all the boxes. This makes their routines more like pairs skating, lots of very obvious elements with a bit of side by side skating in between. The exception to this is the Canadian couple Virtue and Moir. They have worked out how to incorporate the elements seamlessly into their DANCE routines. Check them out, particularly their 2008 worlds free dance, you have a heart of stone if you are not moved by that routine.
I wish skating was still like this. I don't like the new rules, everything is pretty much the same. Watching this skate was a privilege, and I have never forgotten it.
Valentines Day 1984, remember watching this on TV, and 25 years later, got to see them do it live at Dancing On Ice 2009, I had tears in my eyes when the finished!
Thank you for posting this. I will never forget being 18 and watching this breathless. It is still beautiful after all these years. Truly gifted artists and athletes!
It is still spell binding even after so many years. So beautiful and moving! I am so happy that youtube allows us to be able to relive such classic moments again and again.
The perfect score says it all - it doesn't matter how many times I watch this, it always enraptures me. One of my friends recently remarked to me that they were like angels on ice that night, and I can't disagree with that!
It's OK??? First time you've seen it??? How old are you???
It was absolutely revolutionary. No one had ever skated to one piece of music before. No one had ever died on the ice before, no one had ever started a programme kneeling on the ice before.
So much passion and intensity. 24 million people watched it on TV in the UK. Their scores would be like finishing Ice Dance today with 250.00 or 300.00 points. It changed skating until 2004 when the new scoring system brought new rules.
This is ice dance, not Pairs Skating, so no throw jumps, only half a revolution allowed in a jump, restrictions on number of lifts and height of lifts.
As keithpl36 has said - this was a revolutionary routine. It changed the face of ice dance. Even the costumes were different!
There are no throws in ice dancing. In fact, ice dancing had just begun to change in 1984 to become more open to adaptation. Still, you aren't allowed to lift your partner higher than your shoulder and certainly not to do any throw jumps: that's for pairs skating. Things may have changed in the last quarter century, but I was skating with an instructor back then, so I know a little bit. Gosh, I miss it!
still the best

I believe Dean did all their choreography but I'm not 100% sure.

@lucymn1 yes, mainly by Chris. Not bad for a former police officer.

I saw this live back then, and could have cried... the gracefulness, the beauty, it took one's breath away. And still does, after 26 years.

I was 13een and my Mom said, "Don't leave, watch them". I was a boy, wouldn't know anything about icedancing!
But these great performance i enjoy.

I wonder what would be harder not falling over or remembering every single move/step.
sensational!

This was ice dance as it should be. Now with all the lifts, spins etc its far too much like pairs.
With 'dancing on ice' they are still able to pull of, all be it shorter, fantastic bits of skating. If I can still throw myself round the rink when I'm in my 50s I'll be very happy.

they are the best for ever

so beautiful,so perfect,I love t and d for me the best skaters
The2104martine 2 years ago 14

The perfect score says it all - it doesn't matter how many times I watch this, it always enraptures me. One of my friends recently remarked to me that they were like angels on ice that night, and I can't disagree with that!
NekoBazu 2 years ago 3
mmmmm.....its ok.....i spose..........
lol, first time iv'e seen it all, it is pretty amazing, but no throws? or is that a new thing??
robydog9 2 years ago

Even my fiance (at the time; I later divorced him) was spellbound, and he hated stuff like this!
binkle1 2 years ago 5
This is ice dance, not Pairs Skating, so no throw jumps, only half a revolution allowed in a jump, restrictions on number of lifts and height of lifts.
As keithpl36 has said - this was a revolutionary routine. It changed the face of ice dance. Even the costumes were different!
Vienna81 2 years ago 3
throwing is illegal
rosey232 2 years ago
There are no throws in ice dancing. In fact, ice dancing had just begun to change in 1984 to become more open to adaptation. Still, you aren't allowed to lift your partner higher than your shoulder and certainly not to do any throw jumps: that's for pairs skating. Things may have changed in the last quarter century, but I was skating with an instructor back then, so I know a little bit. Gosh, I miss it!
