You are correct. The shells are made from powdered magnesium, ignited by the powder charge.

And yes, that does mean that, however briefly, magnesium is burning at ±3500°F, inside your barrel, so use these sparingly, ideally in a cylinder bore, and never in a rifled slug barrel.

At a 45 degree angle or greater, they really don't go far; maybe 35-40 yards for the general "spray". There was a small "core" or something that traveled at a decent trajectory and went over 125 yds. I tried this on camera but it was dark and the footage wasn't good enough IMO to post.
