I personally believe that this song is about the massive progress that we made during the twentieth century. The song listed some of the greatest aspects of progress and events of that era. The "fire" represents that we are doing something great, something we've always been able to do, but never done until the 20th century. Example, our first heavier than air flight at Kitty Hawk lasted less than a minute. About 70 years later, we dropped a man on the moon and got him back. We are awesome.

Great video, congrats to Mr Allsop. One quibble though... the 'Davy Crockett' referred to in the song is the 1955 Disney film, which was one of Billy Joe's favourite childhood movies. It's not the 'Davy Crockett' tactical nuclear weapon, which came a little later and wasn't used by the military until the 1960s.
