  • I'm no PC fan, but at 3:28, this song becomes one of the most poignant and beautiful Genesis songs ever. "Though you hardly can recall, her face, her form, her memory lingers on." What a shame it didn't make the Duke album. Too much PC ego, I guess.

  • I used to cry over this song because it reminded me of an ex from 2003. I couldn't listen to it for a while as it even reminded me of driving through town, thinking of her while bawling. Fate occurred and I ran into the, and now we're getting married. I played this for her and told her the whole backstory too. :)

  • I used to get girls from singing to this and other songs like tears fr fears police Duran Duran ... And I'n Mex city to calling all stations, Mex gals love it... And my yoga instructor just here...well still got it...

Look for our new band 'smoking mirrors ' from S.F....

    Topher

  • I'll have to listen a few times before familiarising myself with this one. But interesting first time around.

  • Typical Banks brilliance! :)

  • @splicer45

Iam 100% with you. My dream for the future: A combination between banks and hackett

  • @splicer45 i like that banks brilliance.so true.

  • I think we all know "the girl from all those songs"...shame if you don't...

  • @urlord24

tell me, i dont know or iam stupid.

  • Thanks for uploading !!! Just found this great Genesis song back here. One of the best romantic songs ever recorded.

  • Thanks for uploading this!!! One of my favorites from Genesis. Sucks that I can't download it on I-tunes!

  • one of the good songs after hackett

  • Should have been in Duke instead of Cul-de-Sac!!

  • The night is clear, but cruel....amazing!!

  • I still cannotbeleive i didn't know this song till yesterday, i thought i heard it all!! I'm like stunned!!

  • Stunning Tony Banks song that proves how great an album Duke was that there wasn't room for it.

  • as lifelong genesis fan this is incredible but imagine peter gabriel adding a bit of flute to the music and it would make it perfect.Dream on i guess.

  • banks at his best.

  • ...instantly has become one of my all time favorite Genesis songs alongside "Taking It All Too Hard." It's always those old, locked in the vault songs that groups do that turn out to be gold. When artist put out albums or CD's, it's the un-hyped songs I always like..

  • Love this Genesis deep-vaulter! Still have the same "Three Sides Live" cassette I bought as a teen during Xmas '88 :)

  • When I hear this song....I can see the brown eyes and feel the taste of the hair of my very first girlfriend 30 years ago.

Greetings to all fans of this magical music of GENESIS from a berliner

  • best song of genesis after leaving peter and steve

  • I know this song from the "Three Sides Live" vinyl with LP2, side 2 consisting of studio tracks which didn't make it to the final records. This, I believe is from the Polar Studio sessions for the Duke album. I think this one of the very few tracks which 100% sums up the essence of the early Collins era Genesis which I love to death. Phil's voice and drums sound as if they were made of pure gold. And of course after a quiet intro at 43" that Genesis wall of sound comes in. Perfect!

  • This a fantastic song.

  • Sad omission from the incredible Duke,I'd have rather sacrificed Cul-de-sac for this!

  • @splicer45 I would have thrown out "Please don't ask" , which is a Phil tune without any of the sophistication we love about Genesis. I also would have thrown out "Misunderstanding", another Phil-composed track, but that was a catchy, accessible tune which (in oart) sold the album, so I spare that lame ind of 50s retro track by Phil.

  • Please don't ask was pretty good...Misunderstanding was crap! I agree, this should have made the cut. Duke is great album none the less.

  • Great tune that should have been on the album, for that matter any album!

  • Heathaze and Evidence Autumn are two wonderful songs and needs to be done with some decent video clip!!!

  • Several years ago I burned myself an alternate version of Duke with Evidence of Autumn and Open Door in place of Heathaze and Alone Tonight, respectively. It works great that way, I'd encourage anyone to try it. The final chord of EOA has a "cliffhanging" feel that makes a great way to close off the first half of the album, and the ending to Open Door segues perfectly into the Cul-De-Sac intro.

  • @jhillst Sweet perspective, and perhaps what the band intended, but were unable, due to vinyl restraints

  • @PuckRocker43 How so? Both of the B-sides are roughly the same length as the songs I replaced.

  • i think this is my fave genesis song.

    summer of grade 10.

  • I've loved Genesis for years, both Gabriel era and Collins (well, early Collins anyway...). From everything I've read about them, both favourable and scathing, they have a bit of a reputation as a nerdy man's band - the sort of man who appreciates good pure music. Collins' arrival saw them cross over into a broader audience and he built on this with his solo career. What am I trying to say? This is one of their more girly songs, well I think so anyway and I'm a girl (age 44!!)

  • This is not on Duke. Was originally found on the 4th (studio) side of Three Sides Live

  • this is incredible!!!!!!!!!!!! why isnt this on the album??!!! what other gems are out there???!!!!

  • DaMM this must to be in Duke!!!! I know this magniful piece 'cos I buy Archives 2....

Beautiful & Romantic song by the marvellous Tony Banks (word & Mus)

  • beautiful music,my spirit is very happy : )

  • Sooooo sweet! Very sensitive.

  • about time this was uploaded, brilliant! still got this as the b side 7"vinyl!!

  • left off of duke why??

  • @kkthekitty This track was first released as the flipside of the single 'Misunderstanding' in the UK in 1980. The early US releases of the album 'Three Sides Live' included 5 studio tracks on the 4th side (vinyl), where this could be found, along with 'Paperlate', 'You Might Recall', 'Me And Virgil', and 'Open door', material which had been left off 'Duke' and 'Abacab', but released in the UK as B sides ('3x3 EP', 'Misunderstanding' and 'Duchess' respectively).

  • @kkthekitty

To leave some space for other starshimmerings like Heathaze and Duke's travels :-)

It doesn't really matter whether it's on this album or that, does it? Just simply enjoy this brilliant masterpiece. Still goosebumps after three decades.

  • Mike actually was the first one to get the schmaltzy songs on the Genesis play lists before Phil was a writer. And not in a bad way, I mean.

  • Epic track. Because of songs like this they will always stay my favourite band.

  • @sauermusicDE Amen my brother, greatness is not measured in epic thrusts but in the quiet moments away from the glare - Genesis are quite simply the most musical / atmospheric band that ever found the common ground to come together - they bring music, but also grace, passion & thunder: what a band!!!!

  • @deadheroesclub1 Have you ever heard Porcupine Tree?

  • @deadheroesclub1 you have said exactly what I feel about GENESIS , they are more than a BAND ... bring us passion, storm in our souls, grace and all what resonates within who loves the kind of art they have spread all over ....

  • @deadheroesclub1 How very poetically and eloquently stated -- Hear, hear!

  • this song is like heathaze with a one for the vine bridge section...lots of chord changes, the kind that are complex and don't sell well...heh

  • Quite clearly a Duke outtake. Why did this get put behind such dross as Misunderstanding and the leadenly dull Alone Tonight? Replace these and I think we would have contender for best Genesis album. However, it never happened so Lamb is still the best! CASE CLOSED!!

  • @Penguinarmy69 : I think you meant SELLING ENGLAND's the BEST

  • @BassFranky : Except half of it is taken up by Battle of Epping Forest, which is toss. Otherwise, you would maybe have a runner up

  • @Penguinarmy69 Absolutely right , Collins and co lost the plot after Duke with a few exceptions, such as 'Me and Sarah Jane' off Abacab.

  • @charleslsegal : I think you'll find it was the baldy little tossers solo career cash in that ruined everything. "Look he's making shit loads off schmaltzy love songs. Let's do the same" said Mike. "But what about artistic integrity?" said Tony with fake disgust plastered all over his face. Then they both locked in cackling laughter rubbing their hands with glee and greed. Never again would good music be heard from his Arp Pro. And they lived richly ever after.

  • @Penguinarmy69

Absolutely, especially the arrogant baldy !

  • @Penguinarmy69 , check out Tony Banks solo albums. but for the first, they're all attempts at a hit single (and, IMO, not good ones). Mike R did the same, but his success with mike and the mechanics is well known.) This is not 'Phil ruins genesis' , this is a band decision to go pop.

As much as I love their eaarlier music, some of their later art isn't as bad as people present it..

  • One of my favourite songs from the "Genesis, Three Sides Live", album.

  • great song. what album is it from?

  • @MissMaryLocke

It is a B-side from a Single of the Duke album. Avalaible in the second Gensis Box set.

  • This has grown to be my all time favorite Genesis song & an example of how great Tony Banks is as a songwriter (amazingly touching lyrics!!!) I love it SO MUCH!!!!

  • This definately shouldhave been released on duke! Excellent music all around

  • @Progrose I completely agree. When I first heard this song I could hardly move afterwards...This would have fit the Duke story line perfectly between Please Don't Ask and Duke's Travels.

  • One of THE most underated songs from Genesis. A Masterpiece in song writing!

  • Amazing!!! Should have made the Duke Record. This is Tony Banks at his best in my opinion.

  • Great song!

  • Great song!
