I'm no PC fan, but at 3:28, this song becomes one of the most poignant and beautiful Genesis songs ever. "Though you hardly can recall, her face, her form, her memory lingers on." What a shame it didn't make the Duke album. Too much PC ego, I guess.
I used to cry over this song because it reminded me of an ex from 2003. I couldn't listen to it for a while as it even reminded me of driving through town, thinking of her while bawling. Fate occurred and I ran into the, and now we're getting married. I played this for her and told her the whole backstory too. :)
I used to get girls from singing to this and other songs like tears fr fears police Duran Duran ... And I'n Mex city to calling all stations, Mex gals love it... And my yoga instructor just here...well still got it...
Look for our new band 'smoking mirrors ' from S.F....
as lifelong genesis fan this is incredible but imagine peter gabriel adding a bit of flute to the music and it would make it perfect.Dream on i guess.
...instantly has become one of my all time favorite Genesis songs alongside "Taking It All Too Hard." It's always those old, locked in the vault songs that groups do that turn out to be gold. When artist put out albums or CD's, it's the un-hyped songs I always like..
I know this song from the "Three Sides Live" vinyl with LP2, side 2 consisting of studio tracks which didn't make it to the final records. This, I believe is from the Polar Studio sessions for the Duke album. I think this one of the very few tracks which 100% sums up the essence of the early Collins era Genesis which I love to death. Phil's voice and drums sound as if they were made of pure gold. And of course after a quiet intro at 43" that Genesis wall of sound comes in. Perfect!
@splicer45 I would have thrown out "Please don't ask" , which is a Phil tune without any of the sophistication we love about Genesis. I also would have thrown out "Misunderstanding", another Phil-composed track, but that was a catchy, accessible tune which (in oart) sold the album, so I spare that lame ind of 50s retro track by Phil.
Several years ago I burned myself an alternate version of Duke with Evidence of Autumn and Open Door in place of Heathaze and Alone Tonight, respectively. It works great that way, I'd encourage anyone to try it. The final chord of EOA has a "cliffhanging" feel that makes a great way to close off the first half of the album, and the ending to Open Door segues perfectly into the Cul-De-Sac intro.
I've loved Genesis for years, both Gabriel era and Collins (well, early Collins anyway...). From everything I've read about them, both favourable and scathing, they have a bit of a reputation as a nerdy man's band - the sort of man who appreciates good pure music. Collins' arrival saw them cross over into a broader audience and he built on this with his solo career. What am I trying to say? This is one of their more girly songs, well I think so anyway and I'm a girl (age 44!!)
@kkthekitty This track was first released as the flipside of the single 'Misunderstanding' in the UK in 1980. The early US releases of the album 'Three Sides Live' included 5 studio tracks on the 4th side (vinyl), where this could be found, along with 'Paperlate', 'You Might Recall', 'Me And Virgil', and 'Open door', material which had been left off 'Duke' and 'Abacab', but released in the UK as B sides ('3x3 EP', 'Misunderstanding' and 'Duchess' respectively).
To leave some space for other starshimmerings like Heathaze and Duke's travels :-)
It doesn't really matter whether it's on this album or that, does it? Just simply enjoy this brilliant masterpiece. Still goosebumps after three decades.
@sauermusicDE Amen my brother, greatness is not measured in epic thrusts but in the quiet moments away from the glare - Genesis are quite simply the most musical / atmospheric band that ever found the common ground to come together - they bring music, but also grace, passion & thunder: what a band!!!!
@deadheroesclub1 you have said exactly what I feel about GENESIS , they are more than a BAND ... bring us passion, storm in our souls, grace and all what resonates within who loves the kind of art they have spread all over ....
Quite clearly a Duke outtake. Why did this get put behind such dross as Misunderstanding and the leadenly dull Alone Tonight? Replace these and I think we would have contender for best Genesis album. However, it never happened so Lamb is still the best! CASE CLOSED!!
@charleslsegal : I think you'll find it was the baldy little tossers solo career cash in that ruined everything. "Look he's making shit loads off schmaltzy love songs. Let's do the same" said Mike. "But what about artistic integrity?" said Tony with fake disgust plastered all over his face. Then they both locked in cackling laughter rubbing their hands with glee and greed. Never again would good music be heard from his Arp Pro. And they lived richly ever after.
@Penguinarmy69 , check out Tony Banks solo albums. but for the first, they're all attempts at a hit single (and, IMO, not good ones). Mike R did the same, but his success with mike and the mechanics is well known.) This is not 'Phil ruins genesis' , this is a band decision to go pop.
As much as I love their eaarlier music, some of their later art isn't as bad as people present it..
This has grown to be my all time favorite Genesis song & an example of how great Tony Banks is as a songwriter (amazingly touching lyrics!!!) I love it SO MUCH!!!!
@Progrose I completely agree. When I first heard this song I could hardly move afterwards...This would have fit the Duke story line perfectly between Please Don't Ask and Duke's Travels.
indeed. i have searching for this for months! now i just need "you might recall" that is my ultimate fav. poor guy in this song lost his chic with a note she left behind. byatch!

Mike actually was the first one to get the schmaltzy songs on the Genesis play lists before Phil was a writer. And not in a bad way, I mean.
