  • i like joan mitchell..but hate this video

  • Maxfield Parrish said it best when he commented, "Abstract-Expressionist art is 75% explanation, and 25% I don't know what."

  • I like Joan Mitchell. I don't think she is overrated. On the contrary, I think she is underrated and only now getting her due.Her paintings from the 50's and 60's are some of the greatest of post-war US art (paint handling, light, colors).

  • what an absolute thrill - thank you for being so kind to share with us

  • There is some good work here though I don't think think all of this is her best. I must say though that her best work is, in my humble opinion, on a par with the very best of the New York School. The work I refer to is her larger oils on canvas.

  • 7:30 and 7:45 are so awesome

  • what may seem like random color and meaningless swishes to one may be meaningful and moving to another. when you understand that you'll understand art. there is no standard, no blueprint only expression and the appreciation of it. it all comes down to taste at a personal level and as soon as you create a standard for "good" abstraction you miss the whole point.

  • I agree. People like it because of the setting. Cheim and Read is an elegant space in a posh part of New York. Walk Mitchell paintings a few blocks over and place them in the entrance to the public housing and no one would laud them. In fact, most people, even highly educated ones, would think that they are the works of amateurs or children. Education is about transparency, not indoctrination and intimidation. Mitchell's success is not from her obvious skill, subjects or composition.

  • you seem overly concerned with something you obviously despise.....yawn

  • What I wonder is how anyone could like it. It's like applauding a train wreck. Moreover, how could you yawn at my comments and not yawn at the pretense of Mitchell or Cheim and Read? It says a lot about you. Signing off on nonsense is not a marker of intelligence.

  • you used my 'yawn' line on a Pollock vid. Do you hate and then 'take' always? I don't spend my time wondering why people like things I don't. You are young and angry, that's fine, but your rage seems gratuitous and absurd. You don't know me, but your sweeping opinions say a lot about how little you really know.

  • Its always the people who like modern art who cannot make an argument for it without insulting someone. Its the same thing with religious zealots and extreme ideologues. The point is that no one can distinguish Mitchell or Pollock from any host of amateurs, children or animals. It makes no difference how many nasty comments you make. It will not change what they did or make you appear any more discerning.

  • artworldpirate......."The point is that no one can distinguish Mitchell....animals." What were you saying about insulting someone? It is not 'nasty' for me to disagree with you. You are consistently presumptive in your opinions, you don't know what i like. It is you who is acting like a religious fundamentalist, spending your time (ON MANY ABSTRACT ART VIDEOS) telling everyone they are idiots for liking Abstraction. Your statements speak for themselves:)

  • No. There is good abstraction. Just not Mitchell. Really, if you cannot see that her random color and meaningless swishes of the brush are bad, then you are in a morass of some sort. It is getting to the point that vocal proponents of this kind of thing are the minority. It carries about the same weight as space alien abductions and acupuncture.

There really is great art to enjoy. Mitchell is overrated, to say the least. And spending millions on it is immoral.

  • ....and..............yawn.

  • non objective work is unmeasurable - There are variations of lines such as bold, whimsey, natural, twirled, hard edge, broken edge, notations of squiggle, of dashes, of splats of hairline scratches. Line can describe form and perspective. Line can do a lot, but in this work it's reduced to one type which is scibble, like strumming the same out of tune chord over and over and over. It has no relationship, it is random and therefore not creative or intelligent. Big thumbs down - lazy work.

  • yawn................

  • Ha. Its like the Republicans claiming that gays are bad or the Faith Healers claiming doctors are ignorant.

  • you are a member of the church of entitled tv viewers who think that your 'American Idol' opinion of Art is relevant. If you don't like Joan Mitchells work , fine, but move on. Go yell at cars!

  • And I will get your pretty dog too, Dorothy.

  • How horrid to know that such uneducated and crass people can comment on great artists. You obviously don't have a clue. about what or who this great woman is or the amazing body of consistent and brilliant work she created in her life. you fool.

  • why so concerned with hating? Is this how you deal with your lot in life? condemning those whose only job is to express. bitter, bitter, bitter, bitter......

  • This stuff is pure crap.

    YouBetcha10 -are you being sarcastic?

  • Oh, I forgot to mention the silly men who promote her. Don't they have a brain?

  • Oh lord. Mitchell is the biggest fraud. If talentlessness had a advocate, it would be her. Completely awful. I feel so sorry for women. They need better representatives.

  • thanks

  • i like your 1/2 ass approach, you set it up as a quick look that inspires me to investigate her work more. nice job! herr2cents

  • Thanks so much for showing us Joan Mitchell's work. What a painter!

  • thank you, very nice

  • mrs mitchells drawings from the 60's and bill jensens withdrawl from the camera speak volumes about our situation now, thank you james for the insight

  • FANTASTIC! And as a added bonus I got to see what Bill Jensen looks like. Thanks James!

  • thank you thank you!

  • Really appreciate this video. Thanks.
