I don't know how but my older brother managed to get us (my other brother, 13, & myself, 9) into this movie, summer of '74.There was nothing else like it in the entire world of entertainment. It made quite a statement & was quite ahead of it's time, to say the least.I remember laughing so hard I nearly vomited. When something is so new, SO cutting edge, it always remains a brilliant piece in your mind, heart & soul. The Groove Tube is that piece, in mine. Thanks for uploading this wonderful opening
My mother had to tell the ticket person that it was okay for my friend and I to buy tickets, then she left us to see it. I was probably 11. WIld stuff.
This was the very first movie I ever went to see -- at a drive-in in 1973 (sorry that rhymed, didn't mean it to). Absolutely hilarious! Don't make 'em like this anymore....
Another comment: Did the actor and actress from the VW become famous? The guy looks like Daniel Stern, and the girl looks like Ali McGraw (of "Love Story") fame. And I love Mayfield's tune!
The hitchhiker is legendary singer/songwriter/actor/graphics artist and activist Buzzy Linhart, famous for classic songs like "Friends", "Talk About a Morning", "The Love's Still Growing" and many more. To my knowledge the free-spirited young woman's career pretty much went nowhere after this short but memorable role.
When I saw this film back then in the theaters, I thought it was the coolest thing and that, therefore, I was the coolest thing. I tried to get friends to go but no one would. In the 80's, I rented it and invited it and they resoundingly gave it thumbs down. But I loved it! Was something wrong with me?
I remember when I first happened to catch this movie ( on late night cable television ). I actually thought it was 2001; A Space Odyssey at first,.. then that television set appeared ( at 2:46 ) and I was like " Huh ?!! " . Didn't realize until then that it was a spoof. Really well done movie !
@Skulldini The exact same thing happened to me;I was finishing high school when I first saw this{on cable}---not yet realizing I was watching a parody,I thought,"Gee,those ape suits are terrible---you'd think Kubrick would've demanded a little more from his makeup artists!"
@ctdsnark Those apes are pretty ugly and scarry looking I think, .. particularly their faces. Though the suits look pretty tacky in close-up shots. Good location there. Wonder where they went and filmed ( maybe the Arizona or Nevada desert, .. or posibly even Death Valley ) ?
Through my rose-tinted goggles trhe woman was blonde. Still an absolute classic - i think it's why I started hitchhiking in the early 1990s. Never happened tho ;-)
AAAAHHHHH HAHAHAHA This was my very first time seeing the male "organ" I was like 7 I think....I had VHS and my sister and we kept pausin right on his ....stuff I know we were little pervs...Ha Ha Who am I kiddin I still am a perv hell I got it paused RIGHT now LMAO!!!!
The instrumental opening-- was that added by the movie musicians or was it by Curtis. I've never heard it attached to the album version of Move On Up. It fits perfectly.

I saw this movie as a kid, and this intro is still probably the most memorable one I've ever seen in a movie.
