The EL train line here (New Yorkers still call it the Subway, above or below ground) is serviced by the #2 and #5 trains. The lines split up at 180th street with the #2 line going north and the #5 heading northeast. Even back in the 70s when the Bronx was in rough shape, it was neat that so many conveniences (Churches, grocery stores, clothing stores, pharmacies, restaurants, toy stores, libraries, banks, public transportation were always near by. One could get by ok without owning a car.
Wow, vids like these make me so sentimental. I lives here in the 60s & 70s, yet it feels like yesterday. So many fond memories of cruising with my family in our 68 LeMans or on the subway and those GMC Fishbowl style buses. I admit, that on this vid the Bronx looks so much cleaner now! The Cuban Club on Prospect Avenue, south of the station so often played music like this. Right next to that Colony Chicken used to be Cordero's Pharmacy. Warm, friendly people back in the day. Thanks for this!
Thanks for the Great ride around the South Bronx! Up 149th st. down Westchester Ave. under the L Train (2, 4 & 5 Trains). And ending the ride at Casa Amadeo Record Shop! (786 Prospect Ave.) Thanks for everything!
