The Irish is not taken out of this song, its just giving in a taste of some backwoods U.S.A.. These individual artists did this song in the opinion of an Irishman a HELL of a lot better than Metallica or Think Lizzy. They kept it slow and unique without changing the original too much although the Irish version is still the best without a doubt.
Jerry Garcia was one of the best talents the world will ever see, along with "Fats" Waller, Groucho Marks and some others I can't bring to mind! Oh, Einstein....
the melody is the only thing in this thats whiskey in the jar. the rest is all different. ok version but doesnt have the same black humour as the irish version and thats what makes whiskey in the jar.
the mandolin is so beautiful...my grandpa tried to teach me...my hardheaded ass wasnt easy to teach..I miss him...lol, he would have loved this song if he didn't know it was Jerry Garcia :) sleep well Pa
I think those who appreciate ballads sung in the usual Irish style would probably prefer to hear Whiskey in the Jar in its original form but those who aren't already familiar with Irish music would enjoy this very much for what it is - i.e. they won't know what it is not!
@THEbadGENO hey motherfucker if metallica suck a million dick your mama has all the holes full of cocks right now. metallica did a cover of a song, so if you don't like it why are saying that they suck? fuck stupid buddy
well, Metallica did NOT bring me here, but I've heard their version and it is damn good, in fact every version of this song I've ever heard is great... mark of a good song I think .... for someone to equate listening to a certain band and drugs.... well, that's just someone with THEIR head up their ass... gonna listen again and have a couple shots !
I like this version like I like the Dubliners version. I still think I like Thin Lizzy's better though... just for the more rockish sound. They're all great though. it's hard to screw up such a beautiful song COUGH metallica
Springbank,Glen Fiddich,Bushmills,Jack Daniels,Wild Turkey,whisky in the jar!
kudos to Garcia for taking it on love it, as old as the hills of ireland covered by all the great irish bands,& just about everyone else a masterwork of traditional folk music, ideal for a wee dram single malts rule!
What amazes me 1) is that you believe Garcia, and Metallica and Thin Lizzy and the dubliners and about 2000 other Musical groups were the ones who recorded/ Played the song first The song is about 350 generations old .. and 2) that ya think Jack Daniels and a couple other brands is the Crap they're talking about in the jar..LMAO
can someone explain to me how jerry garcia could have "stolen" this song from metallica if he died befor metallica even recorded the song? not to mention its not metallicas song to steel thin lizzy made this song famous but it goes back long befor thier time and theres several versions of it it is an old irish folk song. >aleoffs2468 get your facts befor you post accusations and take you negative energy somewhere else.
This is an old Irish song. Metallica heard Thin Lizzy do it and thought they would give it a shot. I like all the versions, depends on what mood I'm in. If you don't know of Thin Lizzy you should dig into them and check them out, they had some of the best musicians there have been and definitely have their own style. I'm sure the guys from Metallica agree 100%.
@keepntyme i know i was just being sarcastic, im actually a huge dead head, and an even bigger metallica fan so when i saw they both covered the same song i almost shit myself and i feel like i have over the past 2 hours heard every freakin artist in the world cover this song lol it is actually a great tune.
i like this version..... ,i do, its great....., but i like more metallica or thin lizzy version, it must be because i heard them first, but i listen all types of music, and this is very good, it go to favorites.......Great song!!!
@ruthlessone3k I never would have heard or liked this song if I didn't hear this version years ago. When I heard this song I found out about the both the dubliners and the pogues. I found out that I love Shane McGowan, I mean I found out he even existed.

I hated Metallica's version, and I'm a Metallica fan. But I love Jerry more.

Metallicas version is great if you like distortion and yelling better than harmony, musical depth and richness of tone.

@doit420sdf Metallica is SHITE, thin lizzy is the only real rock version, metallica just took a traditional song and fucked it up
atomic116090 1 year ago
@doit420sdf It might be yelling and distortion for your ears, if you listen to the song and not judge it automatically by its genre I think you'll find it's quite a decent cover.
