i have this guitar i really like the neck and action and everything but I'm getting tired of the thick grungey tone. I want to replace the pickups with semour duncans or emg's to give it more bite and clarity so i can get a good tone for thrash and grind ect. I dont suppose you can recomend anything can you? I'm somewhat a noob in these areas. I dont know what specifications would fit or what pickup set up would really work.
If you're thinking about going with actives I'd go for the Duncans over the EMGs. A lot of people including industry pros have been switching to blackouts. Or if you're doing a lot of down tuning maybe Dimarzio D activators.
wd i hav to boost this amp with a pedal to get a good metal tone? I cant play at volumes that are 2 high so that wd hav to be considered. great cover btw :D
Thanks man, You're fine without a boost. I don't even run the gain full on. Although it doesn't quite have the voicing for super heavy metal like Cannibal Corpse or anything.
Yes to all your questions. Although the stock pickups are a little thin sounding. They're sufficient but I dont' play the guitar enough anymore to merit spending money on it.
No Jackson, that Strat headstock one is a custom that I built out of Warmoth parts, the Ibanez is a cheap S370 that I paid $150 for and then got free Shaller pickups for it. The other one was my first real ish electric, and Epiphone SG Special.
Oh ok, actually its the stock speaker believe it or not, but if I had to guess I'd say mids 10- bass 9-10 treble 3-4 and then I've got the mids boosted as well as the bass with the EQ and the very high treble frequencies scooped out to get rid of some of the fizz. Also back off the gain a little bit. I like to turn the gain down and the channel volume up to get a tighter more percussive sound.
No idea. Basic idea is lots of bass, even more mids, not much treble and back off the gain a bit to tighten it up. Also I run a rack EQ in the loop to boost the mids and bass and to roll off the really high highs. It also boosts things a bit.
The pickups are a little weak but its got a big chunky sound so I think its pretty good for it. The amp plays a bigger role though. A cheap amp doesn't sound good for anything.
I don't know what I was using at the time. I change my EQ every couple of days. Besides, unless you've got the same rig as me theres no point. Please read what I said in my other post to you.

Yo that shit is heavy for a Marshall 401 niggah!
Are you running a (seems to be) studio DBX compressor?

tenaciousjp 2 years ago
Nope just an Apex 15 band EQ and I don't even use it anymore.

ive got the dsl401 just wondered how u got that sound, i know uve had a speaker change and EQ but just a rough idea? Bass 8? mids 10? treble 3?

what roughly would the gain and channel volume be? gain 6? channel volume 10?
varkunus 3 years ago
Maybe a little less volume. Its hard to say cause the rack EQ boosts it as well.

whats your EQ settings? And distortion?
