People fail to realize that blue helmets are not ordered or train to fight back, the weapons they are given are simply for self defense. The UN has been naive to think that international law and UN operations are respected. By de facto, this zone was not supposed to be touched by Serbs because it was a UN safe zone and under the Geneva convention. That was their "weapon" per say, and Serbs did not respect that. Tanks against 400 rifles would not have done much.

They shot down a couple of fast jets, so your helicopter would get blown away before it could even see the enemy.

I am saying in the division that engaged srebrenica, there wasnt one single vehicle that could engage a MODERN attack helicopter at the operating range.

I agree that the AH64 and abrams tank are very advanced vehicles but as a single unit they will perish extremely quickly against even a small force. Were not talking about engaging targets on an open field. Aerial units don't have the same type of cover that infantry have. The same goes for tanks. Getting back to what you originally said, a single vehicle cannot take on an entire division of fighters.

Why the Dutch, they had 400 ill equiped soldiers that were basicaly abandoned there with no support what so ever, the Serbs had a few thousand troops plus armor and artillery. If the Dutch tried anything they would have been wiped out along with the rest of the town sadly.
That is a very stupid way of fighting a war, you should only fight a battle when you have a decent chance of victory, your tactic of fighting the enemy is flawed, the best example of why would be Germany during WW2. Instead of retreating and then fighting battles they could win, they barely ever retreated and got massacred when the Soviets crushed the isolated pockets of resistance with overwhelming force.

The military have a system of hierarchy. The army leaders make the decision on if to go to war or not. So was the case in Germany. The Dutch soilders were sent in by their leaders, to act or not to act was a personal choice of each individual Dutch soilder.

People fail to realize that blue helmets are not ordered or train to fight back, the weapons they are given are simply for self defense. The UN has been naive to think that international law and UN operations are respected. By de facto, this zone was not supposed to be touched by Serbs because it was a UN safe zone and under the Geneva convention. That was their "weapon" per say, and Serbs did not respect that. Tanks against 400 rifles would not have done much.

@salloalex No, it's the other way around. It was the UN that had no responsibility, thinking that the mere presence of blue helmets would deter any violence. They were wrong and the Dutch were obliged to stand by and watch. If the mandate would have allowed them to carry adequate weaponry, instead of boxes filled with pencils and a few guns, things might have been different. They observed atrocities and reported them, but it went unheard. They couldn't do enough without further help from the UN

@803brando Anti-tank armed infantry would destroy your one abrams tank in about 5 minutes. In that kind of terrain, tanks are fucking useless because they have to stick to the roads. Easily ambushed. AS for your single Ah64, forget about it. Stinger missiles, SAMs, whatever. The serbs had it all. They shot down a couple of fast jets, so your helicopter would get blown away before it could even see the enemy.

@Rotpig the weaponry the serbs had were old stock pile from the fall of the soviet union, they were weapons that could not counter modern counter measures.abrams engage at over one mile. the AH-64D engaged multiple targets on rough terrain(roads & trees) at 4.5+ miles,the TADS & PNVS system was ahead of its time, it could track over 250 targets at once. the ITT SIRCM system was also ahead of its time.those "jets" you say they shot down were NATO jets of inferior quality,1960/70s phantoms? lol

@803brando It seems you don't even understand basic counter tactics of warfare. Tanks are fodder to anti-tank weaponry, esp in this terrain. You are trying to say that the serb forces could not overcome a single abrams tank or a single ah64. That is utter lunacy. Fire enough anti-tank weapons at an abrams and it's all over. AH64s are extremely vulnerable to anything more than a pistol. Sustained small arms fire, as well as 50 cal machine guns will utterly ruin helicopters of all generations.

@Rotpig you seem to not understand the basic operations of the said vehicles. you cannot place rounds on an aerial vehicle at 4 miles away. not possible, as soon as an ah64D is picked up on any kind of radar, the TADS & PNVS system has already painted it. 20 seconds within them picking up the ah64d, they themselves have been eliminated. I am saying in the division that engaged srebrenica, there wasnt one single vehicle that could engage a MODERN attack helicopter at the operating range.

@803brando A single AH64 can't outgun 1000's of infantry with heavy machine guns. I agree that the AH64 and abrams tank are very advanced vehicles but as a single unit they will perish extremely quickly against even a small force. Were not talking about engaging targets on an open field. Aerial units don't have the same type of cover that infantry have. The same goes for tanks. Getting back to what you originally said, a single vehicle cannot take on an entire division of fighters.

That is a very stupid way of fighting a war, you should only fight a battle when you have a decent chance of victory, your tactic of fighting the enemy is flawed, the best example of why would be Germany during WW2. Instead of retreating and then fighting battles they could win, they barely ever retreated and got massacred when the Soviets crushed the isolated pockets of resistance with overwhelming force.
If anything, NATO should be blamed for this, they could have bombed the serbs

The military have a system of hierarchy. The army leaders make the decision on if to go to war or not. So was the case in Germany. The Dutch soilders were sent in by their leaders, to act or not to act was a personal choice of each individual Dutch soilder.

That's another thing that really bothers me too. Why be there only to stand by and watch? My old troop commander was posted over there during the really bad times and he said basically what you said. And there's not 1 day that goes by where he wishes he could go back in time and do what they should have done: protect the civilians and use whatever force necessary to stop the Serbs. Blows my mind.
