  • 0:45 is too close.

  • two questions. where did you get that needle squirty bottle, and what starter is that?

  • @funkawitz The prime bottle is actually a device used by fishermen to inflate worms so that they float on top of the water. I ground off the sharp tip before using it as a prime applicator.

The starter is made from old, electric power parts. The motor and gear box are enclosed in a plastic pipe, plumbing connector, with a switch and end cap added.

  • i feel gay

  • @xxxbmxerxxx1 o-k-a-y,,, and,,,

Oh, I get it. Don't be afraid. All of us in the hobby of miniature engines don't discriminate against those who have a chronically, happy and enthusiastic approach to life. Welcome to the club but don't chuckle or laugh when one of us crashes,, m'KAY ?

  • these motors suck :P

  • I thought ducted fan motors were safer.

Thanks for the (finger) tip !

  • cold start? with the fuel almost burning on carb? come on

  • Please read the info to the right. It states that the prime was boiling in the carb due to the fact that it's 80% ether. Ether boils at a VERY low temperature.

The HEAD was certainly cold and the ice cube was to demonstrate this fact.

However, if you're stll skeptical, try this yourself.

The point of the video was that even a no ether fuel can be made to start with lots of ether in the prime and the use of an electric starter.

I've accomplished this with other makes of engines.

  • im no rc wiz but in the automotive world ether injected into a vehicle (gas or diesel) is a reat way to get them startedbut at the same time its drying out your cylinderwalls as it ignites. wouldnt it be better to use a glowplug for starting??? diesel combusts on its own under conression but it will combust even sooner if you heat up the fuel/air

  • I tried that and it didn't work. I can't post a link here, but one of my experiments included an adjustable, contra-piston with a glow plug installed.

But this is a model engine, glow plug, not in any way similar to the glow plugs used in full size, diesel engines.

  • yes and no, they are both heating elements. sorry for typing, did that in the dark. but i take your word for it. it was just a suggestion

  • Not a problem, your suggestion was valid and that's why I tried it. But no, in fact, the glow plug in a model engine doesn't work by heating the mixture per se. The platinum element, when heated, acts as a catalyst to fire off the methanol based fuel. Other elements, when glowing will do the same but won't continue to glow when the power is stopped. Platinum, due to the catalytic effect with methanol, WILL continue to glow and initiate combustion.

  • There's no methanol in diesel fuel so the catalytic effect isn't there to initiate combustion. HOWEVER, adding some methanol to a diesel fuel may allow this to work. That's something to try. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • @hopeso i tryed to mix methanol(rc fuel) with diesel. it wont mix. apparently my rc fuel is water based lol.

  • what did you squirt into the carb?

  • good no ether, wont make u fall asleep!!!

  • nope but u can get pretty fucked up sniffing it

  • What is the electric starter that you are using? Is it a commercially-available one? What voltage?

  • Fuel.

  • what you put in the carb

  • i dont get what the compressor screw is for

i do understand diesels but not these

  • easier starting

  • i know right? why not just leave the spark plug in? i mean that should work for a commpression screw

  • and why u start the engine with full throgle?

    its no good that

  • No glow plugs are being used when running these engines as diesels. Combustion is strictly by compression alone.

  • Are the plugs being energized or it just starts spontaneously?

  • Ask YouTube. I've inquired about it and asked for a fix but no go, they can't do anything about it. The originals are in sync so I don't know what the problem is.

  • How are you compressing the videos? What program are you using if any before hand? I suggest you do, Use Windows Movie Maker. Uploading FULL videos to youtube can cause some problems.

  • I'm not compressing the videos as far as I know. I have a digital camera that takes one minute video clips. I load those to my hard drive and there, the audio is in synch with the video.

When I load them to YT exactly as instructed, I get this problem.

It's vexing because the whole point of the series is in getting these small engines to throttle well.

The audio lag defeats my purpose and distorts the success of my work.

I'll have a look at Win Movie Maker though, thanks.

  • Why on all of your videos does the sound not follow the video?

  • A glitch with YouTube, they said they'd try to fix it but so far, no luck.
