  • I might be the only one, but I prefer Tolstoy's short stories to his 3 big novels. Death o Ivan Ilych, Master and Man, Father Sergius are my top 3 Tolstoy fiction stuff. I love his Confessions. I prefer Jean's Confessions, but Tolstoy's is certainly a step up from Augustine

I just got 3 plays by Tolstoy. Excited to read it--I as disappointed by his trilogy, childhood, adol...Hope this pans out better

Oh, by the way, I hate his What is Art? Thought the great soul missed the point

  • My favourite Tolstoy novels are War and Peace, Resurrection and Anne Karenina.

My favourite Dostoevsky works are Devils, Memoirs from the House of the Dead and Crime and Punishment. I got along reasonably well with The Idiot, but I hated The Brothers Karamazov. Like C.S. Lewis, I respect Dostoevsky's religion, but please, Fyodor, don't stick it down our throats.

  • I think that it's unfair to compare Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. They were two very different author who wrote in two very different fields, as anybody who's read them will know.

  • thanks for posting this. i love tolstoy's work, both the long and short stories. for newcomers to his ideas and incomparable gift for detail and psychological description, check out The Death of Ivan Ilych, and the Kreutzer Sonata. Both are fairly short, very entertaining, and intellectually provocative.

I also like Dostoyevsky alot. Too bad the two writers never met in real life.

  • tolstoy is angel dost is fucktard, thats the different

  • Just finnished WnP, amazing piece of work. Nikolai Gogol is another great, a writer these guys respected also, I love his work.

  • Sorry, I prefer Dostoevsky.

  • @3439uahset

I don't think you have to apologize..What Fyodor did is echo the voice of this age. Tolstoy would have been hailed as a monument in the middle ages---But this age, we are all the children of Byron, and Dostoevsky understood that. Like Lermontov, Pushkin and Goncharov, he brought forth Byron in his books--and we love him for it

  • why im a given thumbs down when im only quoting Tolstoy, i didn't even comment.

secondly what have you people got against Islam?

  • and he also said: "if a person is given only two choices: to adhere to the Orthodox Church or Islam, any sensible person will not hesitate about his choice, and anyone will prefer Islam with its acceptance of one tenet, single God and His Prophet instead such complex and incomprehensible things in theology as the Trinity, redemption, sacraments, the saints and their images, and complicated services"

  • your saying tolstoy was a muslim?

  • nice

  • What a glorious writer. Few could match his ability to describe in detail the most mundane of objects and activities. His life was so paradoxical and even hypocritical. He aspired to live an almost unreachable Christianity and yet treated his wife very poorly. An enigmatic character, to say the least. If his longer books appear daunting, dip into his short stories. You will not regret it.

  • Read "The Brothers Karamazov" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. There is to many great writers to name one as thee finest writer. Bulgakov, Kafka, Dostoyevsky, Moliere, Gogol etc who's the best??

  • Agree.

  • You can say who is the best depending on how you enjoy each author's creations, and your personality as well.

If you know depression, than you may like kafka. If you like inner "mind" paradoxes, than you may like Dostoievski, and so on.

But if you like poetry, than definably: Fernando Pessoa is the best. :D

  • GREAT video ! He is the most gorgeous writer I have ever read ! After reading Anna Karenina I bought every book about him I could get my hands on ! His life was as fascinating as his writings, and he based a lot of his writings 'on' his life.

I even had his picture as background on my laptop for a year ! Would have loved to meet this man....was good looking in his youth also.... Nobody's writing satisfies me now, after reading him.....

  • You would´ve loved to meet this man? YOU ALREADY HAVE, THROUGH HIS WRTINGS!

I´m reading "Hadji Murad" right now. Beautiful story.

  • the greatest writer of all times, yes

I am happy to see Him :)

    THANK YOU.

  • I was wondering where is Tolstoy, it's a shame you only see him for a few seconds, nevertheless Amazing video brother...many thanks from a HUGE Tolstoy fan..

  • I would love to see the "other" footage of him that's mentioned...this is why YT is cool. Thank you for sharing this!

  • this is great . thanks for posting.

  • there is more footage of him... a few more minutes anyway... you can buy the 5 disc ruscico version of war and peace directed by bondurchuk - disc 5 is special features and there is some footage as well as biographical information on tolstoy..

  • im fairly confident that there is stock footage of him on his deathbed....in a train station in russia in 1910.....dont quote me on that though i havent seen it myself but there have been a few people who have told me they've seen it on documentaries and such

  • The greatest write ever in history.

  • i do not think i saw him at all until the very last few seconds

  • I think you're right: LT is only in this at the very end. There is at least one other clip of him, though; he's very old, of course, and walking about.

  • is that on youTube? i would be interested to see it

  • I don't think it's on youtube. I remember seeing it on a PBS thing many years ago.

  • omg I didn't know his image existed.

His wagon is very simple unexpectedly...

I wish i could read russian.

Cossack and Youth are my favorite.

    Thx for posting!

  • nihat-genc . com ÖZGÜRCE DÜŞÜNENLERİN NOKTASİ...

  • Thank you very much for posting this video. I'm from Russia and love Tolstoy very much. This is really rare video, I have several audio records of Tolstoy, photos from Yasnaya Polyana (modern, made by me), and if someone want it, write me at mbpolyakov_at_gmail com

  • what did tolstoy's voice sound like?

  • I've read that indeed there was a voice recording made by Tolstoy; also that he wasn't all that happy with doing either the film or the voice recording.

  • He was a great man and a giant author. Thank you very much for this video. :) Have you got more?

  • Heyy.. How did you find it?

  • I think he is the one in the end of the clip?

If he is on that video at all...

  • yes, this is the footage from 1908, shot on writer's 80th birthday.

  • NE MUTLU TÜRKÜM DİYENE

  • Cheers man. How did you get this?

  • Ohhh it is so fine video klip. Is it real?

  • Thank you so very much for posting this video clip. I had never seen it and enjoyed it very much! May I ask? Where did you find it? Do you have any more clips of Tolstoi and his family? Thanks again. What a treat!!!
