They dont eat the Cicada I witnessed this many times I would hear Cicadas in trees buzzing real loud then stop then buzz again.Then one day I heard the sound then 10 feet away a cicada falls with the Hornet on top then I witnessed the Hornet sting him then eat a section on his throat area you could hear the Hornet crunching on the Cicada.

The difference here is that true Cicada killer wasps are totally non-aggressive towards humans. European hornets are not too bad either. If you bump a hollow tree or disturb their nest however, then European hornets will put the hurt on you and you won't forget it either.

I used to work on a farm in Illinois and every once in a while I would see a cicada bumbling around and then all of a sudden a huge wasp/hornet would come out of nowhere and slam into it. They would eventually kill the cicada and drag it away, never to be seen again!

The hornet wins in 2006 I was working in a wooded area, daily I would see hornets killing cicadas. They sting em then when they fall from the tree the hornet jumps on top of them and starts eating their throat. You hear the cicada buzzing at the same time you hear the hornet crunching on the cicada,he eats a big hole in the cicadas neck then he flys away I would see this 2-3 times a day all summer. I never saw anything like that it was better than National Geographic.
