Yes, some of the productions at the Bavarian State Opera can get rather nutty, but after years of MET Opera kitsch and mindless stage-junk, anything is better. Swan boats? Yes, I haven't seen one of those for sale in years......
@portoxali Sorry I meant to hit the thumbs up :( I totally agree with you---for the sake of his wonderful music I will watch these modern interpretations but end up tuning out the video but I have loved the the Ring Cycle in Valencia staged by La Fura Dels Baus--Zubin Mehta conducting and Nikolaus Lehnhoff's direction of Parsifal starring Christopher Ventris etc.
I am very disappointed that the production team did not ask Herr Kaufmann to wear the swan just like Bjork did.
If one feeds people enough junks, eventually it will be very acceptable. So keep having Richard Jones and all those extremely talented producers to come up with more junks!

I don't have special opinion on this stage design, but I listened to the cilps that macbeth0 uploaded, the tempo was really too slow, and sorry to say, kaufmann didn't suit this role. His voice was ok in the beginning, but in the end you can hear his voice fatique. (the "sieh da" was ... my god, not good)
Bayreuth should be easier for him since it's a better sound theater.
Kaufmann is not a specially big voice singer, I have listened to him in zurich opera house and royal opera house, the volume was ok, but not big really. if he has to sing lohengrin, it's good to do it carefully.
Come on, you people - what can you understand about the production from these clips? No chance of understanding what's going on, but see the whole thing before kneejerk response.
Yet another steaming pile of shit from people who obviously despise Wagner but insist on staging his works. I'll retire to bedlam!

Poor Wagner. How absurdly low performers have to fall in order to call themselves modern? Disgusting!

@lilloboss better than bad does not mean good!
Thank God for the singers in this ugly production.

IMO all those modernistic staging ruin the whole innermost Wagnerian concepts that stem from sacred medieval mythical archetypes.

@amfortas1978 maybe that's why Kaufmann sings the Lohengrin in Bayreuth now ?

This production is an joke bubbles all along and the singers only casted by look...
Nagano made the swan .... falling in the lake...
Frozen tears nothing what is in this musicphilosophy !
Not by the conductor not from the singers (all not well trained to sing now this parts) and the production has been like a piece at school
