  • im 15 and my mom gave the 45 of this. Its warped and scratched but i still love it :)

  • NEVER THOUGHT IT WAS 2 VERSION OF THIS SONG

  • Phil Hendrie!

  • do you guys know that this first got offered to Cher, but she turned it down. its true

  • @wingman572 yeah it had something to due with sonny being worried that it will offend her she did not find out until years later ( thats what my billboards book said)

  • Me feeling ill...didn't like what I saw in the mirror...what day is it what time is it...guess I'm getting old...guess I'l go back to runnin' down a dream

  • I've liked this song since I was a kid, but for the life of me I could never follow the story it was telling until I watched your video. Thanks for posting the lyrics. It all makes much more sense now!

  • They should make a movie based off this song

  • @RememberDanne They did. Early 1980's, starring Mark Hammill and (I think) Kristi MacNichol. Look it up on IMDB, or a quick Google search for info ... and before you get your hopes up, it's not very good.

  • A song about an innocent man being executed in Georgia...Damn!

    An epiphany..

  • @crocfme I thought about this song every time i read something about the case

  • I think all of y'all commenting about how Reba's version is better ... even Reba would beg to differ. She loved the original and even sang it with Vicki on her show. The original 1973 recording is better than Reba's version. Vicki's then-husband wrote the song, after all. Of the two SINGERS, Reba is clearly the best.

  • Can someone explain the story to me please?

  • @NinjaJoBreanne

The singer had killed her brother's cheating wife and the friend she had cheated with, but the judge found the brother guilty and hung him. This is like the confession, I suppose.

  • Reminds what I'd do if one of my big bros was gettin' cheated on. Course, I wouldn't let him go down for it!!

  • @DarkBangle they're both about the same thing. Reba just did the music video a little differently.

  • Tanya tucker mother fucker!

  • This song is amazing!! :)

  • Reba is 1000000% better than this bull shit

  • I love this song my dad told me about the song

  • im righting a book based off this song in english class

  • @emjhubbard Really? Ask your teacher how to spell writing.

  • its to fast

  • LOL @ Skippin thru the backwoods

  • @don417 hehe---yeah I noticed that too---"skippin" kind of creates a different image tha "slippin"

  • @seleehwekim haha, gotta watch out for the pixies and nymphs in the "backwoods".

  • There is a video on here where Vicki and Reba both sing it and it's pretty good. Listen and enjoy.

  • My most favorit song.. Vicki was the first and best singer of this awsome song.

    ....

  • My most favorit song.. Vicki was the first and best singer of this awsome song.....

  • My most favorit song.. Vicki was the first and best singer of this awsome song

  • Reba is great. my wife seen her a few days ago at the palace . great great. she had a great time.

  • she sucks!

  • I'm so glad I found this version. Recently, it seems all I can find is Reba's video. She does a good job of singing it, but I hate the dialogue she adds. It completely changes the point of the song. In this one, the sister kills for her brother - noble, in a crazy southerner kind of way. This, of course, makes her brother's death all the more horribly ironic. In the Reba version, she makes it about her revenge on her fiance - self-serving. It takes away what I liked best about the lyrics.

  • Re: My last post IT WAS A JOKE-Ha Ha Ha....JOKE! You never know w/people anymore-and NO one should "shoot"anyone-tho saying shut- up is OK-sort-a-NO

No No not even saying shut up is OK (unless its to my ex)...Stop...STOP! Its like the scene in Animal House-where the Angel pops up on one sholder...the devil-YOU know that scene! So no- there "just" actors...do not shoot them-they have real names-real families! I just thought ON THE SHOW-it would make 4 a good ending! OK time 4 cookies & Milk

  • So many good songs on "THIS" topic. Its scary. "Andy should of kept his mouth shut-And the SHERIFF--damn-- I know that guy...just type in "HAZZARD-by Richard Marx, and he's There, too in " Who Killed Mary"?Then he sheriff & lil sis moved to Hazzard and got Mary...Catch that SOB! No Imiganiation...Like just ending Law&Order,C.I like tit just ends? After 8 years, of Goren Bla Bla-Aimes should have just pulled her gun,at the partners desk,YELLED "shut the F... UP!

    And Shot Goren-Tween the eyes!

  • @22dixiechick fyi this is Vikis song Reba resang it if yoir gunna critisize at least know your facts kay

  • Wait Vikki did it first but whatever Reba is still way better cause she has an awesome oaklahoma accent

  • @22dixiechick Learn how to spell my home state correctly.

  • @kitkatkittykat5000 Sorry, Oklahoma...

  • This is a great song but this chick singin it absolutly ruined Rebas song. Reba kicks butt

  • I really enjoyed this. Thank you.

One point though with the lyrics.

It's a slippin' through the backwoods.....

    not skippin'

    Otherwise , it's spot on.

I love story telling songs and this is a classic.

  • @trisan329 ya she did

  • Have any of you seen the movie with Kristy McNichol?

  • uum little detail its slippin through the back woods quiet as a mouse not skippin

  • I definitly think Viki's version is THE BEST

  • Okay that was rediclous and the worrrst singing ever they conpleatly ruiend the song and reba would diffely NOT like it who ever sings this jus needa stop

  • @ashleyEmorris1 reba dident do it origanly

  • Reba all the way pleeeeease get the good version

  • The SONG is awesome! There... no arguments :)

  • Reba better.

  • So... here's the thing I keep tripping on: How come Seth Amos got off scott free in this song? Andy was stupid enough to admit his involvement to the brother, but neither the sister nor the brother went after Seth. I don't understand that. Sounds like there should be another verse to complete the story. Don'tcha think?

  • @NuUTubeBabe I thought that forever! Ever since I heard the song I wondered why he was so lucky, it doesn't make sense.

  • LOL>..OMG...sounds SO much like the old South used to operate.

  • Regardless who has a better version, Vicki Lawrence's is the one that most of us grew up with. It's the one that brings up childhood memories, etc.

  • Ok, this would be great had the words been three seconds before the singer singing. If people do not know the words they need them a few seconds before hearing her sing it and they need them spaced just right in this song because it can be a follow through with the music.

  • Mate that was magic.

I was never really sure of all the words and it was brilliant to check out the story.

    Thank you.

  • Sweet song.......the way things should be delt with.........His cheating wife never left town, and thats one body that will never be found. I love it. :)

  • This song is unforgettable ! It brings me back to those far AM radio memories when I was a little kid of 7 years with my parents that that siad " Lets go to Florida .... ,Now !

We left at night a cold and freezing Detroit ........and well, just like magic I saw the summer in winter ! The palm trees the see and the oranges ,and of course Disney World!

My Mom and Dad , little Bro and Sister ........the whole family...

What a joy .....a very nice and unforgettable moment of my life !

    Hi Dad !!

  • This song just plain kicks ass!!!!

  • Reba does this song really well, but i still love the orignal, its what im use to(:

  • Vicki does this song, just great...ya do not need a big name for everything. Now I am waiting for Clay Aikens, gay version :-) No diss to Clay...you can sing...but when ya going to get a) some good material, b) not oversing each song....odd lifestyle choice aside

  • omgg reba is soooo much better. this made my ears bleed

  • Im confused. Who actually sung the version that was on the radio? What part of what year was it out?

  • @bikdav

Reba! Duh. I dunno what year it came out, but it's by Reba and thats what you heard.

  • @bikdav

Reba's version came out in 1995

Vicki's version was around the 70s

  • Found the only thing Daddy had left him and that was a gun! Say hello to my little friend Andy!

  • LOVE this song and Vicki's version is the best! Reba's is good too but I have to stick with the original. =)

  • rebas verson was from a diffrnt perspative. he confetion years later.baering her sole the hounting memeries she lived with all the years telling her sin befor she dies. awsom. i like both

  • Comment removed

  • this version SUCKS reba did it SO much betta!

  • @Greendaygirl200 YEAH! SPEAK THE TRUTH >:o

  • that is a great fucking song

  • Get to see Vicki Lawrence tonight in concert---Yay! And she has promised to sing this song..."If you have one hit record, you must sing it."

  • Brother does not go a-skippin' through the woods....he goes a-slippin' through the woods. By the way, this is a great song.

  • Vicki's version is my favorite. I grew up on it so I'm biased. Reba did a good job too but I'll stick with Vicki. Yeah it always gave me the chills too.

  • i like reba better

  • dudes why are you fighting over whos better? its not that big of a deal. we all apperantely like the song so who cares if its better?

  • Kudos

  • First off to everyone who's saying that Rebas is worse can't beat the original.... Rebas is the original! Isn't it? Cause it the only one I've heard and seriously Reba has the country twang. I like hers better I get more emotion out of it...

  • No this is the original Reba was a remake :) Howerver the lyrics are not fully correct but well done just the same :)

  • No this is the original. It's either from the 60's or 70's.

  • no the origenal is this one her husbend wrote it she did it befor i was born i saw it looked in the video like she was the age of the time she did carol burnet i wish thay had the one i saw on tv it was on like carson or something but i saw it as like a music video

  • i was teriffied of this song when i was little

  • @mewmewkazy45

Me too. This and Hotel California. lol Come to think of it even though this is a damn good song, I definately need to be in the mood for it.

  • Such an excellent song.. I was just a little kid when my dad introduced me to it and I loved the story it told. I see there's quite the dispute going on in the comments here and, this being the internet, I just have to throw in my two cents: this is the first version I ever heard and my favorite by far. You can't beat the original. :3

  • Yeah you guys are awful, she isn't bad, but Reba is most certainly better than this.

Reba was the best female singer ever to live. Only to be rivaled by Dolly.

  • this is the better version of this song. Reba's version is lame, she cant do this song like Vikki can.

  • I agree 100%, don't let the thumbs down people affect you. Vicki is definitely the better of the two.

  • Does anyone here on You Tube remember when Vicki Lawrence was a regular on "The Carol Burnett Show" along with Harvey Korman and Lyle Waggoner? Forget "Mama's Family" this was 10 to 15 years before then.

  • I remember The Carol Burnett Show. We would laugh so hard when it was on. Tim Conway made us laugh a little harder when he was on. Just like music, t.v. shows keep changing--they're not quite the same anymore.

  • Cool, an Old-Timer like myself. Tim Conway was during the final years of the Carol Burnett Show. Yes, Tim Conway was very funny. Was he not?

    R.I.P.: Harvey Korman.

I am talking back in the Early 70's of the Carol Burnett Show. Back then, I remember the show being on 11 P.M. on Saturday Nights on CBS-TV. Harvey Korman was a Natural in Sketch Comedy. Vicki Lawrence worked better with Lyle Waggoner. Dannysallstarjoint, you are awesome! Keep in touch.

  • yah dudes. reba rocks this song. it is so much better than vicki

  • I'm gonna disagree with you. I think Reba does a great job with it, but I like Vicki's version more.

  • Yes.

  • I love this song and think that Vicki is a wonderful singer and actress. This song has got a wonderful twist to it! Just found out it was written by her husband (of two years) Bobby Russell who also wrote "Saturday Morning Confusion" and "Little Green Apples"...he was a talented writer.

  • when i was a kid i thought they said "Andy Warhol said hello" and wondered what the heck Andy Warhold was doing in this southern gothic melodrama!

  • THIS SONG MAKE SENCE NOWW(:

  • reba is so better i dont like vikki..you all got a problem setle it

  • I agree, Reba is good, but you can't beat Vicki!!

  • if you need kick as eighties country, the Highwaymen are def. one of the best sources to find one

  • would anyone happen to know if Reba's version was from the 80s? I need to find a kick-ass country song from the 80s by Wednesday, and I really wanna do this one. Plz let me know :)

  • 1991

  • better, not better whatever. How about we go with "different"

Can't we all just get along

    :)

    Cher'

  • Ahhh Vicki.

I'm 21 years old, and 2 months ago, I didn't even know who Vicki Lawrence was. To me, Carol Burnett was only "Miss Hannigan"

Then I did a search for Lily Tomlin, landed on the skit she did on the Carol Burnett show- saw Vicki as the "ditzy cellmate" and have been obsessed every since.

    She is simply brilliant!

  • I love this by Vicki. Thanks for posting it!

  • It's based on a true incident that happened back in the fifties if I remember correctly.

  • i like how you made the song!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I still like the origional, remember it well from '73. It doesn't matter who sings it, it's a song you can't deviate from. Oops,

I ended that sentence with a preposition.

  • Reba does it better. She nows how to make that song "her" song

  • How anybody could say Reba did it better ,wow I don't no what there smoking . I guess they like that bubble gum country pop with synthisized sound effects. does anybody remeber real country Hank Williams ,Jennie C Rielly, lefty Frizzell,Hazel Dickens,Johnny Cash ,George jones,Patsy Cline,Loretta Lynn.Tammy Wynette and many more to many to list.Dont ever forget what true country music is!

  • youre completely right

  • For people like me, it's not a matter of who did it better: this was a great 70s song back when we were in junior high school and Vicki was a regular on Carol Burnett. A Great Song! Thanks for posting it!!

  • yeah i agree reba had more soul in it

  • This is a KILLER CLASSIC!!!!! The sound quality is Beautiful!!!!!!!

  • Thanks a lot, I love Vicki's version of the song best, always have. :D

  • I love this song... although some of the words were wrong.

  • Vicki Lawrence is gr8 don't get me wrong, she's 1 of the best... but reba sang this song betta.

  • BOOOOOOOOOO! YOU STINK! >:(

  • this is good but not as good as reba!

  • i beg to differ but that is just me...:)

  • personialy i like reba better. she sings it with more emotion and a little lower.

  • OMG! Why'd SHE do it!?

  • what are you talking about. The sister?

  • she sucks

  • uhhh...i dont like it very much to high 4 me

  • Ew. This isn't Reba.

  • What tipped you off? The by Vicki Lawrence in the first 2 seconds should have been a tip off....;)

  • Yeah sure, but I don't watch the video, I just have music playing in the background of what I'm doing.

  • Well then I guess you would be in for a surprise then...;)

  • I do that too!

  • this song is good but its kinda creepy :P

  • I have to say that the first person o these comments you says a women cant shoot is wrong i can out shoot any guy and i would be proud to show you

  • wow thats so wrong! my twelve year old girl even has a nice aim!

  • Annie Oakley, hello?

  • sexist r we?

  • Comment removed

  • LOL commando...someone got his balls handed to him.

Women rely on guns more than men do because men fall for the stupid belief that brute strength counts for anything in this day and age. For that precise reason, women are BETTER at marksmanship.

If anyone ever puts it between your eyes, it'll be a lady.

  • Yup. To be less then politically correct anyways.

  • ...actually, reading these comments it seems several ladies ALREADY got you metaphorically between the eyes.

  • so who killed andy?

  • vivki lawrence See, little sister don't miss when she aims her gun

  • thanks seth!

  • his little sista annie, duh

  • i found out a month ago..DUH

  • Thank you for posting the original studio song!

  • Reba's is "Better"?? I think Not! Wanna know why Reba even DID this tune? Because she Liked Vicky's version in the 1st place!

  • Then she perfected it.

  • Lol- ridiculous thing to say because it's very faithful to the *original*. I didn't hear much deviation from it at all.

Why? Because Reba & the producers thought the *original* was fine the way it was. So "perfected it"? I think not. More like- straight-on remake.

I do think Reba's version lacks the air of "mysterious creepiness" of the original. Vicky's has orchestration & that added touch makes a difference.

  • i like this

  • this is a verrrrrrry good song. MY SCIENCE TEACHER SHOWED US THIS but it is pretty good. im puttin it on my iPod nano.LOL

  • Lawrence was so excited she had a hit with this because she was always just a part of the show. What's nice about her is she admits it, without ego.

  • My lil' sis would do the same for me.

  • This is far better than the remake.

  • good vid =) like the song, pretty sad tho lol

  • when its says when the lights went out in georgia it sounds werid

  • Reba sound better
