People are talking about Kirk Hammett. Why do you all compare guitarists. They are both good. I saw another video where people compared Marty to EVH. All the guitarists in well known bands are good and have their own styles so stop comparing them. It's everybody's own opinion who the best is.
@Purplino Generally, people would say the proper term is C#m, as it is just the more common way to say it. But remember, the notes Db and C# are enharmonic, so they are the same chord.
@BlizzardRREVH Yes they are almost the same. With fretted and keyboard instruments they are exactly the same but with violin they are a bit different. Violinists play Db a bit lower than C# (or maybe it was vice versa, I don't remember). But if we have an E major scale, it has C# and not Db so it should be C#.
im 15 right now and i know if i get a couple more decades of experience of guitar playing, maybe just, maybe ill be 1/10th as good as marty and i'm alright that :'D
If you play an hour a day with serious practice you can be pretty close to him in 3-4 years. Though it'd take like 10+ years to get that vibrato down.
this is the kind of stuff that sepperates him from lil kirk, marty goes all over the place on the fretboard, kirk does pantatonic runs and jus picks one section of the fretboard and uses it to death!!! some dont realise how much better he is then kirk.
@partynaked11 thats actually not true.lol kirk is great with exotic scales. he's just not as amazing as marty. what really makes marty great is he's he's less repetative(that part of what you said was true) and marty is far more impressive with bending and vibrato.
@codebabe - well name other solos besides eye of the beholder and where ever i may roam that he uses an exotic scale in. those are th only two. every other solo he uses th same scale. Please tell me cause im damn curious!!!!
@partynaked11 Throughout the And Justice For All album exotic scales are used. Not as extensively as Marty, but Kirk does use them. The beginning of the solo in One is. As well, parts of Cyanide are exotic.
Alright, Kirk Hammet is fast, and has a relatively clean technique. But that's all he's got going for him. Marty is fast, has great technique, and he's also extremely musical/melodic
since when did music have rules? anyway thats what breaks your standard diatonic tonalities.
thats what i love about friedman one minute you hear a Flat 7 then suddenly a Natural 7 or a sweet passing tone that just creates the right tension at the right moment.
I totally disagree with Marty when it comes to scales. He says you don't need to practice them or really know them, but the fact is that there are established modes consisting of many, many patterns of intervals that people have thought of over the years...he didn't "make up" anything...he discovered a particular mode. Believe me, theorists have thought of these things, and my point is that if you learn them out of the gate, you won't have to waste time "discovering" anything.
yes but to your average "theory bores me" guitarist.hes giving them the best advice suited for them.
as for advance players and musicians they understand what hes getting at.
besides unless your going to be playing modal jazz, the normal rocker who just wants to solo over a stanadard diactonic prog wont care whats what as long it sounds good regardles if its Major with a sharp 5th or a lydian with a flat 7.
as long as they can hit notes that dont create tension their happy.
The only guideline I have as far as what I do improvisationally is that I play what I hear in my head. Usually if I can hear it in my head, what I play will be connected, and probably won't sound bad. I see scales and theory as a way of understanding how and why things sound good. Theory allows you to to develop an understanding of what sounds good, and use that understanding to expand your horizons. But even if you do or don't know theory, it still comes down what sounds good.
"Discovering" something is part of developing your own style. You piece it together in any way you see fit so that it's as genuine and as true to you as it can be.

im a kirk fan and i like kirk better but marty is amazing also and yeah he does play pretty fast..when he was with megadeth he played some blistering fast stuff.
because kirk doesn't have anywhere near the musical knowledge or ability to improvise as marty friedman. Once again remember we're speaking from a musician's standpoint. And its fine if you like him more...just gotta remember to give the respect to marty when its due

Ok I see this same thing in a diferent way. Split a ionian box pattern into 3. I mean every 2 strings. Dude, Marty's playing is awesome. NO ONE can deny he's got his own style and vocabulary, a real achievement in modern popular music.
From the strictly theoretical point of view, he's REALLY limited: he barely uses dominant seventh chords or really basic relative minor arpeggios... but man HE KNOWS HOW to use that!
if you google marty friedman melodic control, the third link down is a link to 'filestube'. you can download the .mpg files tehre. If you don't have much internet, i'm going to download the .mpgs and re-ecode them to make the files smaller.
