  • this is valuable lesson

  • at 6:11 marty is so lost in where the solo took him that he grabs an imaginary trem arm....one of my favorite lead players, no doubt

  • ok how the fuk am I suppose to have good phrasing while trying to find the right chord tones at the same time.

  • "here's what i would do in the same situation" - and that marty is why you're a god

  • i hear some of slash in this video

  • @XxBFMV24xX Thats because Marty uses blues pentatonic scales here : Slash uses a lot those scales.

  • @XxBFMV24xX you here pentatonic scales not slash

  • @dvpkid ok slash used pentatonic scales too

  • thats it one of my fave!

  • Hi i'm marty friedman, and this is my instructional guide on how to make love to a guitar.

  • when it comes to melody... i think marty friedman is one of the best..

  • Control guys....Control....

  • 0:12eye , He's the man

  • People are talking about Kirk Hammett. Why do you all compare guitarists. They are both good. I saw another video where people compared Marty to EVH. All the guitarists in well known bands are good and have their own styles so stop comparing them. It's everybody's own opinion who the best is.

  • Someone tell me what amazing pickups he uses? ;D

  • Pero que cosa mas bella!

  • after he finishes playing click at 6:27 he says: "I never did that" ;DDD

  • man that is cool!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just one mistake when he talks about the relative minor chord to E...it's C#m and not Dbm as he says!

  • @Purplino Generally, people would say the proper term is C#m, as it is just the more common way to say it. But remember, the notes Db and C# are enharmonic, so they are the same chord.

  • @BlizzardRREVH Yes they are almost the same. With fretted and keyboard instruments they are exactly the same but with violin they are a bit different. Violinists play Db a bit lower than C# (or maybe it was vice versa, I don't remember). But if we have an E major scale, it has C# and not Db so it should be C#.

  • @Purplino C#m and Dbm are the exact same thing, it just depends on the context.

  • 4:48 sounds like pantera haha(X

  • 1 people dislike? kirk!! come on,...

  • im 15 right now and i know if i get a couple more decades of experience of guitar playing, maybe just, maybe ill be 1/10th as good as marty and i'm alright that :'D

  • @angelm151

If you play an hour a day with serious practice you can be pretty close to him in 3-4 years. Though it'd take like 10+ years to get that vibrato down.

  • Yah..um....im gonna stay in the key of E...somewhat

  • Fuck yea Marty at 4:15!

"Thats what im gonna do, and you're gonna check it out."

    Tell us what to do!!!

  • so inpiring

  • "people play aggressively when they use distortion so thats what im gona do" haha

  • 8:05 ... lol? XD

  • Awesome Lesson

  • this is the kind of stuff that sepperates him from lil kirk, marty goes all over the place on the fretboard, kirk does pantatonic runs and jus picks one section of the fretboard and uses it to death!!! some dont realise how much better he is then kirk.

  • @partynaked11 Hes basically jesus compared to Kirk.

  • @partynaked11 thats actually not true.lol kirk is great with exotic scales. he's just not as amazing as marty. what really makes marty great is he's he's less repetative(that part of what you said was true) and marty is far more impressive with bending and vibrato.

  • @codebabe - well name other solos besides eye of the beholder and where ever i may roam that he uses an exotic scale in. those are th only two. every other solo he uses th same scale. Please tell me cause im damn curious!!!!

  • @partynaked11 Throughout the And Justice For All album exotic scales are used. Not as extensively as Marty, but Kirk does use them. The beginning of the solo in One is. As well, parts of Cyanide are exotic.

  • I guess this video is about 1992

  • 4:16 " so that's what im gonna do, and youre gonna check it out." haha

  • Alright, Kirk Hammet is fast, and has a relatively clean technique. But that's all he's got going for him. Marty is fast, has great technique, and he's also extremely musical/melodic

  • when he played with the distortion I came.

  • awesome fuck'n guitarist.

  • what kind of bridge is that?

  • looks like a floyd with the bar disconnected to me

  • it does look like it. Could even be a Kahler

  • @ruffles272 Kahler fixed bridge with fine tuners.

  • the thing i like about marty is, still while maintaining his theory knowlege in soloing he uses actual felling outside theory as well

  • The explanation is awesome, but I think my computer got stoned from waching you. Must be too much bong Wong LOL.

The sound is way off to the images. Thanks anyway, great help.

  • Man I wish I could play like him.

  • Kiddies, learn your Chromaticism.

  • Ho-lee shit. Marty Friedman sounds like Dr. Katz...no lie

But he is still the most awesome guitar player ever

  • Marty Fried--Man...get it?

    I heart Mary Friedman.

  • What a great solo! 5:02 gave me goosebumps. He kinda cheated though by modulating the key...

  • since when did music have rules? anyway thats what breaks your standard diatonic tonalities.

thats what i love about friedman one minute you hear a Flat 7 then suddenly a Natural 7 or a sweet passing tone that just creates the right tension at the right moment.

the guy is a amazing musicians

  • I totally disagree with Marty when it comes to scales. He says you don't need to practice them or really know them, but the fact is that there are established modes consisting of many, many patterns of intervals that people have thought of over the years...he didn't "make up" anything...he discovered a particular mode. Believe me, theorists have thought of these things, and my point is that if you learn them out of the gate, you won't have to waste time "discovering" anything.

  • i agree with u.

  • it doesn't matter how you learn it as long as you figure it out

  • yes but to your average "theory bores me" guitarist.hes giving them the best advice suited for them.

as for advance players and musicians they understand what hes getting at.

besides unless your going to be playing modal jazz, the normal rocker who just wants to solo over a stanadard diactonic prog wont care whats what as long it sounds good regardles if its Major with a sharp 5th or a lydian with a flat 7.

as long as they can hit notes that dont create tension their happy.

  • The only guideline I have as far as what I do improvisationally is that I play what I hear in my head. Usually if I can hear it in my head, what I play will be connected, and probably won't sound bad. I see scales and theory as a way of understanding how and why things sound good. Theory allows you to to develop an understanding of what sounds good, and use that understanding to expand your horizons. But even if you do or don't know theory, it still comes down what sounds good.

  • "Discovering" something is part of developing your own style. You piece it together in any way you see fit so that it's as genuine and as true to you as it can be.

    Besides, it's more fun.

  • lol this is harmonic minor...sounds kickass

  • Yep...it's pretty cool. It's actually a D harmonic minor scale built on the 5th degree, A.

  • Marty, you amaze me!

  • when he started to play with distortion it was like a mixture of lynard skynard, slash, and a small bit sounded like john petrucci

  • slash? Really? Slash?

  • He is so good..awesome.

  • the key word here's C O N T R O L

  • too good for megadeth

  • I love Marty, hes just so original.

  • Marty sounds kinda like a metal version of jerry garcia but more accurate and faster.

  • marty isnt really fast but he is awesome, he has sayed it himself that he never really picks fast

  • Kirk? So young and sooooo much to learn.

  • The same sonsense everywhere. Why can't someone like kirk better than marty without instantly "becoming" ignorant?

  • because kirk doesn't have anywhere near the musical knowledge or ability to improvise as marty friedman. Once again remember we're speaking from a musician's standpoint. And its fine if you like him more...just gotta remember to give the respect to marty when its due

  • because kirk hammet cannot compare to marty's ability in any area of guitar playing.

  • oh stop it...kirk is great...his solos fit metallicas song perfectly

  • thats true but does that make him a superstar shredder like most people think he is

  • so what...still is great...guitar isnt all about speed

  • I'm talking about Kirk Hammett u no that right?

  • ummm yes!

  • oh ok I no but wat I meant was he's a lil overrated because he's in metallica and fits their style but he doesn't compare to Marty Friedman

  • perfect to learning

  • Broder wongsmokesbong How is the name of that DVD?...

  • ANybody know? (i dont rofl). Perhaps the link given in the video information helps a little

  • marty friedman - melodic control

  • @wongsmokesbong the name of the video its "melodic control"

  • listen to dragon's kiss or rust in peace you guys. fucking phenomenal work from marty.

  • just learn some chord bit scales not too much theori that makes your head explodes martys explains it good just put some mind to what you like at times you dont need any theori at al,at times you probably dont even know if your doing a maj or a min7 or a extended 3 fault tone etc.make up a rythem and jam over it i thinks that the best.

  • but how about if you wanna sound phrygian over a chord prog? or dorian, etc?

  • Yer Marty's lessons are certainly more intuitive than Yngwies lol.

Testiment to the fact that he hasn't got a big ego and just wants to help people learn, instead of show off. And just like you said , he has helped me also so much with the way he explains things

  • i think i should get a jackson kelly

    then i'll be great

  • how much is one of his guitars

  • depends

the starter levels are 300 dollars

    intermediates are around 500-700 dollars

there are some that are 1000-2000 dollars

  • Good luck finding the KE-1, which was Marty's signature Kelly.

  • Ok I see this same thing in a diferent way. Split a ionian box pattern into 3. I mean every 2 strings. Now look where the root is ... , In the first set o 2 strings it starts from the 1st note, in the 2nd set of string it starts from the middle note, in the 3rd is on the last note. Also the first set of 2 strings is major, the 2nd is dominant?!, and the 3rd is minor. That mean that when u go up in octaves the root looses 1/2 step becoming minor.

  • So there is 3 diferent way to aproach chords when improvising. Which brings 3 diferent feels at solos.

  • yea

  • there are actually seven different modes, so there are seven different ways to approach solos, for major chords use ionian pattern that travel all the way up the guitar neck, for minor aeolian is often used

  • I like how Marty breaks things down into simple stuff instead of going in to boring music theory.

  • OH i forgot.

this vid was made just after the "Countdown to Extinction" 1992 (?) record by Megadeth, and just after-in the meanwhile the recording of Marty's second solo album, Scenes. (which is absolutely great!)

  • oh man! this vid brought so many good memories to me... i remember watching this video 10 years ago... GREAT!

Dude, Marty's playing is awesome. NO ONE can deny he's got his own style and vocabulary, a real achievement in modern popular music.

From the strictly theoretical point of view, he's REALLY limited: he barely uses dominant seventh chords or really basic relative minor arpeggios... but man HE KNOWS HOW to use that!

    GREAT FEEL, GREAT SOLOS.

  • hey i downloaded the video, and the audio isnt in sync.

i got it on quicktime player.

    can anyone help me?

  • Try VLC media player

  • @wongsmokesbong how can i download the video? sorry i'm very bad at these things... ;) thanks

  • @bigcaruss

if you google marty friedman melodic control, the third link down is a link to 'filestube'. you can download the .mpg files tehre. If you don't have much internet, i'm going to download the .mpgs and re-ecode them to make the files smaller.

There is also a booklet accompanying this (tabs) floating around the internet, you can find it by searching "melodic control .pdf" on google

  • @bigcaruss

kay i uploaded it, updated this video's information with the link (look up^^^)

  • he is the best!! awesome

  • damn great lesson

  • for scales you still need to know what is sharp or flat. he knows the fretboard so he can almost do this without thinking. Just giving people some help.

  • Was this before or after he joined Megadeth?

  • hmmm... not sure.

  • during, b/c Marty didn't use Kelly's before or after he was in megadeth

  • @topraman517 during he was in megadeth

  • @topraman517 after, i think. im pretty sure before he joined, he played carvin guitars.

  • Hey Marty O genki Deska?

  • how can he pick like thatn and still so cleanly, the strigns are not making any noise

  • he's playing clean anyway..

  • Thats the reason he plays like that, so when he picks, he doesnt hit any other strings, it also gives him a different attack..

  • Wow, he is fantastic. That was lovely.

  • that was so funny when he kept saying "control"~~~

  • wow... ive always had guitarist with far more yrs under their belt tell me to put my solos in Key.. but i do waht this dude does.. i fallow my chords and then ill change it up with a solo in key.. but its just my own style.. makes me feel a bit better i want to be a rebel..

  • does anyone have the complete version of this video? I have been trying to get one that is not cut for a long time. I am talking about the missing part at 8:05 in this video (the triple run part). Any help in finding the video is appreciated.

  • lol didn't notice the cut before. My version is cut! My version is also the vhs version...

  • here is an uncut version: video id uSaTAGsIBEI

  • All versions are cut i think, I have that on mine too
