This song takes me back to a time in my life, yes, in the late '80s, that was very painful, but the memory of Joan's music then, and hearing it again now, makes it beautiful.
If you do one thing in this life, let Joan Armatrading seep into your heart and soul. Her music is just the most incredible jewels of pure universal beauty that you will ever hear. There is a song for every moment, every emotion and you can use them to help you smile or to cry. I first found this lady when I was 16 and at 42 my love of her music has not diminished. Every concert I have been to see her in, she sat patiently and signed everyones items who waited and there were some long queues!

@ibpink2 Hi pet, thanks for your reply. :o) and if you type in joan armatrading home page you will find her and all her tour dates for the next year. You can subscribe to her from there. She is also on facebook. I hope this is useful to you if not contact me again and i'll try and send you some links. Good luck! X
For me this is one of the most emotional Miami Vice moments I can remember, too. Another one is Larry Zito being found dead in the shower musically accompanied by Steve Winwoods "There's A River". Even decades later those moments are so clear in my mind. Miami Vice truly was the first TV Show promoting amazing songs I never had heard before at that time but still are important parts of my music collection nowadays.
I heard this song on Miami Vice back in the eighties and thought it was amazing. I have since been looking for the song, thinking it was a male vocalist. Saturday afternoon I'm watching Miami Vice reruns and the scene with this song plays. My wife says "oh, that's Joan Armatrading". I cannot find the song on any of her albums. Anyone have a clue? And by the way, music (talent) like this cannot be diminished by inadequate sound.
@jhstudio64 Yes, definitely on the Secret Secrets album from the 80's, and the Willow - Joan Armatrading Collection is the best bet nowadays. Last week (Nov '11) this song was attempted on guitar at a local amateur open mic night in a wine bar in Northampton (the recording is on our channel). Obviously, Love By You sounds a lot better with piano, and with Joan! Thank you so much for putting this original NEC live recording up.
I first heard her on Miami Vice in the 1980's. You have to credit MV for being ahead of their time in regard to promoting music artists, Great song!!!
I heard this song first on Miami Vice back in the 80's or early 90's. I thought it was great then and still is great. She has a very distinctive voice and we hear far too little from her on this side of the pond.
The inimitable Joan. So talented, and such a beautiful song. I think "Strange" runs it close though, also from 'Secrets Secrets' - though I can't find a video of it. Anyone got a clip of "Strange" to share?
This is another beautiful song - it's so great seeing them again on youtube. They bring back so many memories- I must have seen her live 10 times over the years and every performance is superb.
How is it possible for such a wonderful talent as Joan Armatrading to have such a crappy sound system and keyboard? Ruined the whole performance for me.
I was at this live performance at NEC, and the sound was good for such a large venue. The BBC recorded the show, which was recorded by me on VHS tape, then from VHS to Camcorder, then on to computer to convert to a suitable format for Youtube. Then of course, how good is the amp and speakers on your listening system.
Everything else that I listen to on here and all of My Favorites have very adequate sound. It's not my epuipment, I have many decades of listening to great sound, great music and I am a musician myself. I know what poorly recorded music sounds like and I know all about the loss of fidelity during transfer. I also know a crappy sounding piano when I hear one and a poor sound system. This 'rental' system did Joan Armatrading no justice.
@jhstudio64 If you check my 'favorites' you will see quite a few videos. Not one of them has the poor sound quality of this one. It's not my speakers or my listening environment, all the other music that I listen to sounds fine, some better than others. To hjmcgil, there is a very large difference between quality of music and musicianship and the sound quality. Did you actually read what I wrote?
@AbbieHoffmansGhost I guess I'm no expert on keyboards and sound systems. All I know is that I have played this recording at least 40 times in a row just today, it's on my Facebook, and it's all I listen to. But you're probably right, it could be better.
@hjmcgill This piano sounds like a Yamaha CP80, which was an attempt by yamaha to make an electric version of an accoustic piano to save the need to keep having to tune it. Although not a good immitaion of an accoustic piano, it has it's own distinctive sound, which I like. It has been sampled by EVERY electric Piano manufacturer.
This is the only known recorded live recording of this song, so although not the best quality recording, it is performed perfectly by singer and pianist. So enjoy
Yeah, Secret Secrets, I love this album too. It's still with me even today. I remember that I watched on TV her performance of this song with Joe Jackson playing piano. It's such a superb song. Thanks for posting. I wonder why she's one of the most underrated singer/songwriter in pop music.
WOW! That takes me way back. I saw Joan sing this song at Radio City Music Hall during her Secret Secrets tour. Joe Jackson came out and played the piano for this song (and Talking to the Wall). It was a great show!!! (with some pretty cool light effects!)
Wow-- this is from my favorite Joan album, "Secret Secrets"-- never thought I would see this-- If you have more, I would love to see them all! Thank you so much for posting these!
I love you all. God bless you all!
