Harnesses can actually chafe the top backs of the dog's legs at the chest if not fitted perfectly. The nylon martingale with the chain loop is a very humane way of adding in a correction when needed. It also helps eliminate pulling. A dog will follow its head and the martingale pulls the head in the position you want it to go - then immediately release the pressure when the desired result is obtained. The chain loop releases quicker than a nylon one. Good demo.

Dogs are safest and most comfortable wearing a nylon harness, not a collar, when out walking.

Harness' are only good after the dog has been trained and is leash reliable. Using a harness before a dog knows how to walk on a leash only encourages pulling.
