Caught Freddy Cole do his thing at The Manor in WO, NJ a few yrs since, cool, very cool. Would that he could check out this song on myyspace - Wm Chas Cooke - SABRINA
In my opinion he is more talented. He was nominated for a Grammy this year for best jazz vocal album. He was edged out by Esperanza Spalding which is still a win for Jazz. Please join us at the Atlanta Jazz Party in April for what is certain to be a memorable event including a reunion of Freddy Cole and Bucky Pizzarelli along with nearly twenty other living legends of jazz.
I'm sure that many people just see Freddy as the brother of Nat King Cole who is trying to be like Nat. He probably hears that all the time. That's why he wrote this song. Freddy should be known and appreciated for his own contribution to music, but unfortunately, he will always have to live in the shadows of his brother.
@tommiexander I basically agree. But it would be natural for him to leverage a bit of the association. After all, he could have let his last name remain "Coles" instead of changing it to "Cole" like Nathaniel and oldest brother Eddie. Doesn't matter now. He's his own man. BTW, his voice and approach is somewhat different from Nat's. I think we just fill in the gaps with what we want to hear and see.
I have heard Freddy Cole in Chicago (his home town) and I am THRILLED that he is back here to play The Jazz Showcase this week (May 6-May 9 2010). Freddy is a GREAT singer!!
I was in the jazz for teens program at william patterson (Wayne, NJ) during the week of the 23rd and we got a workshop with him plus free admission to the concert. He is great! Especially since I'm a piano player.
I would love to see Freddy live. So much personality. And just a little Nat (genetics). But Freddy is not his brother. His love of music shines through and he deserves all the respect in the world.
Excellent musician. I had the opportunity to see him in a show here in Brazil about 10 years ago. Here, the great song "I Loved You" performed by him was a top hit in 1978.
Just found out Freddy Cole and I both graduated from The Juilliard School. Sweet!
