  • SKA is 10000 times more powerful that what we have now and will produce more information than today’s computing can handle. This is amazing, lets hope Australia and New Zealand get it.

  • I think Australia/New Zealand is definitely the better safe option considering stability, wider coverage with less pollution, high quality standard and far less corruption ( 1 of best in world).

  • South Africa would be an ideal place for this array. Perhaps it is time the world trade in their baised judgement and use some scientific sense...South Africa launched the meerKAT project which puts them ahead in the bid. My university, the University of the North West, are one of the top oppurtunities in astrophysics in the southern world. The site in the Karoo would be far from settlements, at a favourable altitude, climate and far from disaster areas -and also close to Cape Town...its perfect

  • @Drageo3108

Insiders know the SKA will be built in Australia/New Zealand. Based on science alone it is the superior choice as Australia's outback is uniquely isolated with low radio pollution, provides a longer east/west axis and the ideal longitudinal position to complement extant radio telescopes in South America and maximise southern hemisphere coverage. The global consortium behind the project prefers entrusting the SKA to two stable, friendly governments than a hodgepodge of African ones.

  • @Drageo3108

(cont) Australia's Pathfinder project to develop technology for the SKA is much more technically complex than meerKAT. Besides the overall technical/political superiority of our bid is the fact Australia has been a pioneer in radio astronomy. The best university in South Africa (Cape Town) is ranked 340th in the world, while your alma mater is only ranked 25th in Africa and 3,175th in the world. Australia's best university is ranked 72nd, and we have 15 in the top 500 versus your 1.

  • @Shakesdicke

And South Africa's universities and technology will not climb in rankings unless they are given opportunities. You will be lying if you said Australia acheived it all on their own - they were given opportuinties. If I'm not mistaken, Australia was a prison at first, was it not? It has had much time to develop. South Africa's democracy is only 16 years old, and all research done before 1994 was sold or lost. Maybe Aus is better, but I assure you South Africa is capable.

  • @Drageo3108 I never said SA was incapable, just that Australia was a better site for the SKA because of the technical considerations. If SA was incapable it would not have been shortlisted. However, Antartica would probably be the only place in the world with less radio pollution than the deep outback. The site we are proposing for the SKA is bigger than Belgium, but has only 150 residents.

Everyone was very pleasantly surprised by how well South Africa hosted the World Cup. Olympics next?

  • They are bidding for olympics, but many believe it would be better not to, and rather use the funds for development or science. I tend to agree, but if it comes it will be welcome. But back to the point, the Northern Cape has been declared a radio astronomy reserve - there is no pollution, it has a high altitude, yet it is accessible with a set infrastructure. Regardless of where it lands, it is an incredible endeavour and a great opportunity. I will be happy to get involved someday either way.

  • Amazingly cool, it is shaped like the milky way too haha

  • Let's just hope they make the right choice of location for this awesome array.

Western Australia would be a far better choice than South Africa given the political instability that seems to plague all of Africa.Geologically very stable and the locals would definately welcome it.

Can't say the same thing about South Africa.

    Good vid.

  • @BCT071 Agreed =D

  • @BCT071

I am getting impatient with all the negative feed on the net about South Africa... I am turning 20 this year, lived in rural South Africa all my life and I have never been so closely affected by instable politics. I study at the University of the North West and I am looking to do my phd in Astrophysics. My professors have told me about SKA, and also that SA is LEADING in the bid for location because of their meerKAT project amongst other things...I may yet become invloved personally.

  • @Drageo3108

An out of control crime rate and on the verge of a Zimbabwe style race war.

Does'nt sound like a very stable place for this kind of investment.

  • @BCT071

Do not believe everything they tell you in the media... journalists seldom look for good in Africa, or any developing countries, because it is simply not what people from developed countries want to hear. The fact is South Africa is ahead in that bid, these crimes that are allegedly frequent here have never affected research here & we already have the SALT telescope which can see a candle flicker on the moon.... and South Africa has 11 cultures - there can be NO Bob Mugabe! Gudday mate!

  • @Drageo3108

The media is not my only source of information on this matter.

Western Australia has the largest population of white ex-South Africans on the planet.

I have spoken to quite a few of them recently and they have all left out of FEAR.

Fear of car-jacking,Home invasion and Murder.

And all of this seems to be racially targeted.

And there has also been some talk among the ANC about land re-distribution.

    Just like Mugabe.

  • @BCT071

I will not deny that South Africa has obstacles...huge obstacles, but they are no bigger than the potential and abilities of our people. The developed world oppresses Africa - denying them opportunities, and if they didnt they might have the finances to keep people from crime...and give them jobs - proper ones like SKA would supply. The gov bites, but I will not let them cause ppl like YOU to stand in the way of something great like SKA which could mean a job for ME! I will not leave...

  • @Drageo3108

ultimately I am here...I am seeing whats happening. I do not fear. And if the rest of the world have nothing good to say, let them stay there but in silence - along with those who left! The blight will reach them too one day. My path is certain, and SKA will be wise to send it here...for we are ready. Of this I will say no more.

  • @Drageo3108

    My my quite the rant.

Do you want a standing ovation now?

Nothing i or "people like me"(whatever that means) will have any effect on the choice of location.

Only the facts on the ground are relevant in determining this.

The project is far too important and expensive to be decided by the wants of you or "people like me".

You have personalized this issue beyond reason.

    I merely stated my opinion.

You have taken it much further.

Take a deep breath...and grow up.

  • @BCT071

There there fellas... I believe master Drageo3108 has a valid point. If South Africa can do it, why deny them that? I admire his patriosm, though bit aggressive, at age 20. Telling him to grow up is out of line! As for BCT071, food 4 thought...but SA can do it. Fifa 2010 most certainly proved they know how to handle large projects. Australia have plenty other projects. SKA wont make a mistake with South Africa, i wager.

PS the crime's not that bad there!

  • @GalileoHouseArrest

    Lets be honest.

Wherever the SKA ends up it's not going to be there because of the talents or abilities of the local population.

    It's location location location...as always.

Whether South Africa is the best geographical sight i don't know.

As far as political and social stability are concerned Western Australia wins hands down.

  • @Drageo3108

    Quite the fighter...admirable.

Tell me, do you have a theatrical or film background? U sound like you might - and by that I mean no offense or refer not at all to your argument. I'm merely curious.

  • Thanks for posting, very exciting stuff.

  • Thanks for posting this. The video on the SKA site is a bit big to download. It's great to see a video that doesn't rely on overuse of special effects and sound effects. Hope Australia gets chosen, but good luck to South Africa too.

  • 2012 SKA Pathfinder telescopes completed Start of Phase 1 construction 2014 Early science with Phase 1 2015 Production readiness review 2016 Phase 1 completed (15-20% SKA) 2020 Phase 2 completed (full array for low- and mid-band frequencies) Start of Phase 3 system design (high-band) 2022 Start of Phase 3 construction lol nibiru would of come and gone by then and the alians would of had time to have a drink with us and go back to there home world. (if there is a nibiru)
  • They better hurry up, or all they'll be looking at is Nibiru.

    5*'s

  • thats awesome!
