Evangelion, DID have a happy ending. People just probably weren't paying attention through the whole of EoE, to find out that Shinji's rejection of Instrumentality, meant that he everyone could bring themselves back. It just happened to be only Asuka and Shinji who had done so at that point.

But Asuka died as well, she was mauled by the MP Evas, and she came back. So, who is to say that Misato can't come back. Who knows, we'll just have to see what happens in rebuild.
