I was pondering the other day after watching "In a mirror, darkly" how the mirror universe got so totally fucked up, despite the existence of the "good" characters like Kirk, Archer, Sisko, et al. And then I thought, a good point where the universes diverged--the north lost the civil war and America fell apart and could not stop fascism from taking over in the twentieth century and corrupting mankind into a bunch of racist conquerors. A thought.

Actually it was stated in one of the DS9 mirror materials that this universe diverged when a radical idealist in Britain at some point in the mid-to-late 1800s started a crusade based in the principle that only strong should survive. He deemed empathy, and love as weaknesses that humanity needed to purge themselves of to advance. It was Charles Darwin, the father of the theory of evolution. It was to say that science without compassion is just as easily corrupted as anything else.

@PariahOfTheKOHLM That is absolutely ridiculous. They might as well have said Isaac Newton or Albert Einstein started the evil universe. Darwin is often mis-characterized as some kind of political ideologue by those who have an ideological need to resist the idea of evolution. Darwin discovered a biological process (which we now know far more about than Darwin ever did), he didn't write a damn sociological manifesto. People like Hitler and Marx did that--I like my idea better.

its a shame they never made a series based on the Mirror universe. I would have muched enjoyed watching a group of people trying to survive in such universe.
