I can sing along with this song completely and it's so emotional. The lyrics, the tune but mostly her voice and her gestures. She is complete awesomeness.
I've never heard of this woman in my life and this my first time seeing her b/c someone named Kyuhyun covered her song in concert and it was heartbreakingly beautiful as is her original rendition. I feel like crying and I don't even understand what she's saying!
I saw her in concert in Yokohama back in 2002. I didn't know who she was. My friend just asked me to go with her to a concert. I've been hooked ever since and I make it to almost every concert she has in Eastern Japan. I'd go to Kansai to see her, but I never have enough time.
Her voice isn't to it's usual quality - it still sounds great.. But she puts soooo much into this... It's absolutely amazing! *is in total complete awe*
Where's this intensity in the West? Too much rest, too many hamburgers and diet cokes?
I say, without cruciating pain and stunning effort, very little art emerges. It puzzles me to no end why minimizing pain has been so important in the Anglo-American lifestyle. Being fat and satisfied just isn't the skeleton key to spiritual happiness.
Stake2, I would hope that you would realize that Japan is just as urbanized as the US, Tokyo perhaps even more so than even New York City. With vending machines selling everything you could possibly think of on every corner of Tokyo, you'd be hard pressed to believe that they have it any harder than Americans do. And I hope you would also know that since Japan has the second largest music industry in the world, there's plenty of vapid, profit-inspired music, just like there is everywhere.
You're right I suppose. But aren't you personally concerned this "industry" attitude (bourgeois division into work and pleasure) spreads across the whole globe? Doesn't anyone see anything alarming about that? It's like one way of thinking would become the only way of existing. It sounds so un-free and violent, sad...
There have been many European critics, at any rate, who don't think it's a good thing only.
Of course I am concerned about it; genuineness is nearly extinct, replaced by ulterior motives. But it's just a side effect of globalization, this obsession with industry. That's why I love Chihiro so much. She's such a breath of fresh air. You don't need to look closely to see her authenticity and true devotion to what she does.
Well... your comment will only be fair if Chihiro's music is in anyway representative of the Japan music scene in anyway... which isn't true. She's too unique to be comparable to any other musician, east and west. She would be an oddity wherever she hails from.
That and unfortunately, Chihiro was pretty much a one-hit wonder (sales-wise). Sales figures for her post-comeback album simply indicate that Japan doesn't appreciate "pain and effort" anymore than USA.
As so many people have said, this is what it is to sing with one's heart... Just watching it as a vid on youtube is so heartrending -- being actually in that crowd must have been an undescribable experience.
The only time I ever recall her wearing shoes on stage is the Zodatsu Zassou performance at Space Shower '04. And she was only doing a 2-song guest spot.
It's a personal preference I guess. Not like she was the only one who does it.
I love how much emotion she puts into her performances. Every time I've seen her perform this song, she always ends up in tears near each performance because she's so into it. It always gives me chills. She ends up a bit choked up near the last chorus. It's so beautiful. Thanks for uploading. ^_^
Brilliantly beautiful live version of this atmospheric song. The piano flourishes (quite distinct from the album version) make the hairs on the nape of my neck stand on end as Chihiro-san winds up for the big chorus...
she's a real genius

If you guys paid attention, throughout her performances in this Live at Budokan DVD, she is in bare feet.
She treats these as her "performances" rather than just a song, it shows how much effort she put into it. Gotta love her!
