1937 was the year Japan invaded China.

The popular music from Shanghai in the 30s has very little in common with this touching and evocative tune. This was the era of legendary singers like Yao Lee, Li Xiang Lan and Zhou Xuan. Yao Lee's vocals can be heard in SRP's version of "Rose Rose I love you."

@enoching7 that's when the nanjing massacre/rape of nanjing happened during world war II.  i don't know if that's what they named the song after but it's a very strong historical memory for many chinese
