@bread315 well teaching a rat tricks is easyest to start with when they are only about a month old thats the time they learn in the most and a bit before that if you start earlyer it will be hard to teach them tricks but not impossible start with what i used to do have a few drops of water on your hand and usually they will lick it out of your hand that way you can start with tricks and always reward them with food or something and most important you cannot force a rat to do tricks.
..... I want two husky rats so badly! the markings and colour are so unique! I like that ^^ but I`m not saying that other colours are bad not at all! all colours are beautiful! I just like "unique" things :3
what treats do you use, my rats could care less for what i try feeding them..i tried almonds, and bannana, and apples, they get bored of the same thing i guess.
@princespanties777 my rats LOVE any kind of cereal, especially reese's puffs and cheerios. cereals are great because they're so puffy and full of air that you can spend more time training without the rat getting full :)
Where did you get Whiskey and Womble? They are lovely and intelligent ratties! I love their colouring as well! They look like they have such wonderful personalities!
Where did you get Whiskey and Womble. They are lovely and smart ratties! I am looking to get some like them! They look to have great personalities and I absolutely love their colouring! :)
No afence, but My rat is one month old and she can do all these tricks a hundred times better. But your rats are cute and cever too. I love their videos. <3
@animallover5326 same the way you would train a dog into a recall. Use their name, and or come. When they come to you, give them a treat and use a click or something to simulate them knowing their going to get a treat. Later on you can start using their names, and or the word come. If you have two, then if one comes when you call the others name, don't give them the treat, but if the one you called comes give them a treat. Hope it helps.
Thanks to this video, every animal in my house, plus the neiyghbours, plus the kindegarten at which I work, plus the wild goose at our local duckponds...know how to spin.
We used to have a large cream male rat that we named Rat Bastard that did tricks and acted as though he was one of the cats, and the cats treated him as one of their own.
6 years is a long time for a rat to live, and he was worth every minute of it, especially when he attacked a would-be burglar.
At least we have his great grandson, Merlin, with us now.
@DarkEvangel94 Rat Bastard Sr. was sleeping inside of a Lionel cattle car when a thief tried to take the car, along with a lot of our collection of old toy trains. Ratty bit the crap out the guy, and called his buddy, a 30 lb. Bengal tom cat into the fight.
The guy ran off and called the cops, and told them about our "vicious" rat, and admitted to them that he was trying to steal from us.
@SSN760 Well..wow. My ratties would probably just be like "OMG do you have food?!" doing that little dancing thing they do at the side of the cage when they want out.
it can happen they wee on you when they walk over your arm to mark, especially with non castrated males. I had a pair of my own a few years ago, and they alwayd did mark territory on me XD
Well, a male could be very fitting. Two females have it hard being together. But you can always train them not to pee on you. My brother had a female black rat, but I barely recall her since I was so young. but my pair of males were fat and spoiled XD haha but I recommend males!
I HAD rats.. but I think they don't need that much food, give them new water every day of course. Food for rats or rodents all over is very cheap. You can also give them rests of your own food (I gave them) but not too much or they will gain weight like mine did. I ended up putting them to sleep (due to fleas) I bathed them too much. So that is also a notice, don't bath them because they smell funny, rats aren't smelling like flowers :)
never bathe them. Because they can clean themselves. But if it happens they have got poop on them or anything you can let them. Well you CAN bathe them, but not with soap or anything, Just plain water. they will be scared at first and poo in the water, but it will come along just fine in time ;D
I favorited this video~ Its really cute, and shows that rats are indeed cute, intelligent, affectionate pets, rather than plague bearing little vermin. With a little love, time, and work, they can do really well. :3 I subscribed to this channel, so if you happen to make any more training videos, I'll be sure to check it out.
Since ppl here seem to know abour rats could someone tell me : I have two caged, two female rats. I want a male so i can breed. can the two sisters live together even when one is pregnant and has babies? i reall need to know....
@homehuthousehaha try giving them rice krispies. they're small enough that they don't take a while to eat it, like they would a cheerio. mine love it!
I have two female rats... Lulu and Lola..and Lulu just recently had little ratlettes...Lol..anyway...Rats are awesome pets..they are the best rodent you can have because they don't bite, they are awesomely smart, and they have the cutest babies evar!!! lol.... They arnt nervous at all...once they get used to you of course...
I'm really considering getting a pet rat, as i've had lots of pets throughout my whole life, and they look so lovely.
However, i've always been incredibly nervous about rodents biting! I've had nasty bites from guinea pigs and hamsters. Could anyone give me some reassurance? I really want one!
Rats a a ton of work, you shouldnt be concerned with the biting. More like where yer gonna get the money for a vet fund and the very large cage they need. Plus, you almost never get just a single rat.
Rats are the least agressive rodents/least smelly and the smartest They'll hardly bite you ^_^ just make sure you play with it and don't harass them to much :D and they'll love you
im also afraid of rodents biting, but ive only been bitten once and it was my own fault, it didnt hurt that much and right afterwards i got lots of rat kisses. rats dont want to hurt you and they try not to. but make sure you get at least 2 rats, they are very social
Haha I ended up getting two Degu's instead! I adopted them this afternoon from Pets at Home and they're incredibly friendly. As great as rats sound, I have no regrets!
I wanna teach my female rat tricks while she's still young, but she doesn't eat when she's out of her cage, only at times when I have her on my lap and I give her bread crusts. xD
I've kept rats for 13 years and I give my girls a mix of grains, cereals, nuts (in and out of the shell), dried fruit, seeds, and pellets. Plus they usually get a bit of whatever I'm having too. They have yoghurt drops for treats as well as dry cat food, and they love sunflower seeds and corn on the cob
Rats have no gag reflex so beware of choking hazards like jelly, and remember that soft fruit leads to soft poos. Also, some rats are lactose intolerant.
Can I ask what you (or any onlookers that read this comment) prefer as rat treats for things like this? I don't want to give mine something too filling/fattening or something too big so she sits there eating it for 30 seconds. lol
I find that my rat, Houdini, likes yogies the most. :]
I have to get them at pet supplies plus, becuase my petsmart doesn't offer it.
Try not to give your rat more than 2 a day, mine usually gets 3 (he allways tips over the can!). Split them up into tinyyy peices. Usually about 6 pieces will come of one chip.
Let me know how that works!
Also, my rat realllly likes carrots! I just chop those up into tiny peices too! careful though, too much is hard to digest!
It would probably be best to stick to fresh fruits, and maybe some yogies once in a while. Figure out waht they like the best, preferably in the fresh fruits and vegetables range.
Very good use of a variable-ratio schedule :) Good job!
Oh yes and what are you feeding them?
thank you!

I use Honey Nut Cheerios broken into quarters. Tiny, nonfattening, deliciously tempting.
