@bread315 well teaching a rat tricks is easyest to start with when they are only about a month old thats the time they learn in the most and a bit before that if you start earlyer it will be hard to teach them tricks but not impossible start with what i used to do have a few drops of water on your hand and usually they will lick it out of your hand that way you can start with tricks and always reward them with food or something and most important you cannot force a rat to do tricks.

@animallover5326 same the way you would train a dog into a recall. Use their name, and or come. When they come to you, give them a treat and use a click or something to simulate them knowing their going to get a treat. Later on you can start using their names, and or the word come. If you have two, then if one comes when you call the others name, don't give them the treat, but if the one you called comes give them a treat. Hope it helps.

We used to have a large cream male rat that we named Rat Bastard that did tricks and acted as though he was one of the cats, and the cats treated him as one of their own.

6 years is a long time for a rat to live, and he was worth every minute of it, especially when he attacked a would-be burglar.

At least we have his great grandson, Merlin, with us now.

The guy ran off and called the cops, and told them about our "vicious" rat, and admitted to them that he was trying to steal from us.

Well, a male could be very fitting. Two females have it hard being together. But you can always train them not to pee on you. My brother had a female black rat, but I barely recall her since I was so young. but my pair of males were fat and spoiled XD haha but I recommend males!

I HAD rats.. but I think they don't need that much food, give them new water every day of course. Food for rats or rodents all over is very cheap. You can also give them rests of your own food (I gave them) but not too much or they will gain weight like mine did. I ended up putting them to sleep (due to fleas) I bathed them too much. So that is also a notice, don't bath them because they smell funny, rats aren't smelling like flowers :)

never bathe them. Because they can clean themselves. But if it happens they have got poop on them or anything you can let them. Well you CAN bathe them, but not with soap or anything, Just plain water. they will be scared at first and poo in the water, but it will come along just fine in time ;D

I favorited this video~ Its really cute, and shows that rats are indeed cute, intelligent, affectionate pets, rather than plague bearing little vermin. Rats a a ton of work, you shouldnt be concerned with the biting. More like where yer gonna get the money for a vet fund and the very large cage they need. Plus, you almost never get just a single rat.

I've kept rats for 13 years and I give my girls a mix of grains, cereals, nuts (in and out of the shell), dried fruit, seeds, and pellets. Plus they usually get a bit of whatever I'm having too. They have yoghurt drops for treats as well as dry cat food, and they love sunflower seeds and corn on the cob

Rats have no gag reflex so beware of choking hazards like jelly, and remember that soft fruit leads to soft poos. Also, some rats are lactose intolerant.

I have to get them at pet supplies plus, becuase my petsmart doesn't offer it.

Try not to give your rat more than 2 a day, mine usually gets 3 (he allways tips over the can!). Split them up into tinyyy peices. Usually about 6 pieces will come of one chip.

Let me know how that works!

Also, my rat realllly likes carrots! I just chop those up into tiny peices too! careful though, too much is hard to digest!
