@reivenlocke I think he's better known as the perverted janitor in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest... Both movies star Jack Nicholson, ain't that a thing?
I keep thinking I liked these 70's shows because I was just a kid. But now I'm thinking I tolerated them because we only had 3 or 4 channels of "watch it live or never" programing to choose from. Not 500 channels and DVR recordings like we have today.
Sad, but in this over-active, right winged, P.C. society today, something this cute would never make it past the censors. When will people grow up and chill and realize not everything out there is meant to offend someone somewhere?
@stevedogan ...Around the same time the 'people' you speak of (Yourself included, apparently) 'grow up, chill, & realize' that Western Civilization, especially America, has a LONG history of 'offending' people every way they can, cartoons included. Do yourself a favor & don't insult peoples' intelligence pretending that this isn't the case. 'Cute' or not, Hong Kong Phooey is stereotypical to a certain extent-That can't be denied, & being 'P.C.' about it doesn't help, either.
@Entropy161 People tend to take almost everything offensively or negative until proven otherwise today. You're saying they don't have "white-man" cartoons in other countries? Wouldn't offend me unless it's a blatant attempt with racial comments, foul language name-calling, etc. towards the people portrayed . To me that's where the difference lies. Did you ever watch the movie series "Roots"? If they allow THAT amount of racial comments, etc. then a cartoon shouldn't be taken worse.
@jfpinell ...Again, stop trying to insult people's intelligence--You & I both know that whites were not subjected to centuries of racism, oppression, & dehumanization which included the media, so cut the bullshit regarding 'white man' cartoons, as it's clear that, if they do exist (Which I doubt--Whites are usually heroes or positive characters in worldwide media i.e. Anime), they don't negatively affect whites. And 'Roots' was a fictional book & movie based on history. Drop it.
@Entropy161 Ahhh, from the way I've understood from what I've seen and heard from that movie that is an account of what happened to his family way back to the 1700's.
As for dropping it, tell that to Steve Dogan. You won't succeed though. The guy is a weirdo to say the least. I still agree with him however. People take things WAAAAY too seriously and negatively today.
@jfpinell ...Contrary to popular belief, Roots' is completely fictional. Alex Haley, the author, plagiarized a book called 'The African' in order to write Roots (And was subsequently sued by the author & settled out of court for an undisclosed amount), and even coerced an African chief into making Kunta Kinte and his family up. In other words, despite how good the 'Roots' book & movie is, both they & Haley are fraudulent.
But anyway, who the hell is Steve Dogan? The creator of HKP?
@Entropy161 Who's HKP? Trust me, you don't wanna' know who Dogan is! He's a weirdo in the area (to say the least).
Fake......interesting. New one by me. I mean, even at the end of the DVD he talks about his family like everything was a documentary. Where'd you find *this* out? (And I just bought the thing too because I haven't seen it in years.) I would guess even if it's not about HIS family, the general idea is probably darn close to how they were treated back then, I'm guessing.
@jfpinell HKP=Hong Kong Phooey (Duh lol)--I made his name into an acronym because of comment length restrictions. But anyway, I found out the truth about Haley & 'Roots' from Wikipedia (Overview, & yes, I double-checked for accuracy) and the many cited sources on both Haley and 'Roots' pages. This revelation could be why neither Haley nor his book/movie are really celebrated during Black History Month. And yes, I agree that the general idea of American slavery is what's important.
@Entropy161 I see. I *still* will hold though that people are way too touchy (for lack of a better word) today. And of course there ARE people today that will complain just to start something. To me it was a show about fighting crime set in another culture (even with as comical as it was) just as all the other versions of super hero shows are. I would take no offense unless they blatantly used racial slurs etc. I know where youre coming from its just that the *intent* is what matters
@jfpinell ...While your perspective may hold true to a certain extent, it's an indication that you're more than likely white. I say this because a big problem with many whites (& now other non-blacks) is that you pride on trying to tell blacks & other Minorities how they should think, feel, & react to something you, as a white person (Again, if you are), will never have to experience--Racism, especially racism perpetuated by your own people. Its existence & prevalence can't be denied.
@Entropy161 No, no, no. :) Case and point there. People take things too negatively today too easily. Go look up "sesame street 1-20" once. 1 of the videos has a picture of...I think he's a guru from India. They humorously have him with 4 arms. 1 day someone is going to take offense to that -even though there's no harm intended. People just didn't get upset so easily years back. You can't even use the term "man" today or womens lib. groups get upset. Discretion just isnt there today
@jfpinell 'No, no' no. :)' indeed. As I've stated before, you're correct to a fault, but I'm not going to let you say that intentionally racist cartoons & characters don't & didn't exist. A prime example of this is the 'Censored Eleven (Look them up on here),' eleven old cartoons that were so racist they've been permanently banned from airing, Louie from 'The Jungle Book,' the Crows from 'Dumbo,' and all black anime characters, just to name a few. All were intentionally racist.
The part that starts 43 seconds in during the chorus would be really good as the basis for a hip hop beat. It would be hard to get rid of Scatman's singing though. Damn... I need an instrumental.
@GeorgiaKev Did you miss the part at 0:47 where the singer goes (and I quote) "Chicky Chong Chicky Chong Chicka Chacky Chooky Chong" ? That's seems just a tad inappropriate by today's standards, don't you think?
@UncleBibby47 I never heard it that way.....to me it sounded like his car sputtering along. Being it was the early '70s, a lot of American-made cars made far worse sounds that that! LOL!!
Still, it was a good show and I'm saddened that people can't rise above racial sensitivity and just enjoy the show for what it's worth. Same goes for Disney's "Song of the South." There is so much disinformation about that movie, which is SO sad.
SCATMAN CROTHERS!!!! incase you didnt know he was in the movie THE SHINNING he played the older caretaker who could communicate with the boy..his grandmother called it shinning.
