The first time I heard this, my sister's BF got me high as shit, and drive like 60mph down gravel roads blasting this shit. That ride was intense!!!!!
IF this song was meant to be deep poetry and everything in it was symbolism, then the song, from what i can tell, is about some sort of substance that is frowned upon and can get you high (hence the interlude about her "tumbling and diving through the clouds"). another words drugs.
The puppet represents a false prophet, hence the reaction from the church. This song is very much shrouded in subliminal messaging. When people say that Phish's lyrics make no sense it is merely because they are not articulate enough to pain the picture.
I used to listen to this in 5th grade before bed...off my walkman...from a tape....i still see the story i built in my head from then when I hear this......gorgeous and WEIRD....such an art influence...im a writer now btw...
@ezekieloak It's "A tranquil and motionless sleep" not emotionless. i have no idea how emotionless even makes sense lol.. also note the adjective "eerie green deep" and the part where it says "and the sound of the laughing old man filled her ears" (the Armenian man from the beginning of the story/song). that should signal that her death was not a happy one. or at least signal that she didn't intend or want to die but the puppet "dragged" her down. ("puppet" possibly being some sort of symbolism)
@joeydank - I'm sorry, I missed your question here! The art was done by D. Conway, I got it from a free wallpaper site called fantasyartdesign, The name of this one is Forever Lost, in the Surreal Art section.

@themayking666 i know! when i finished listening to it i was like " OH NO SHE'S DEAD :0 " yeah sad ending .....
bananaclonz11 1 year ago
@bananaclonz11 No no. It's not a sad ending! Listen to the music! Listen to the lyrics, even. Equally comparable in joy:
'Tumble and dive through the clouds'.
'A tranquil emotionless sleep.'

@bananaclonz11 No no, mate. No apologies necessary. LIsten to Trey singing through the grin that stretches the folds of his pasty white cheeks!
