The problem i find with the overall theme of this video, is that you are trying to mould Islam's conception of gender equality to fit the western concept. It is as if you believe that the West is the barometer and we should try to reach their standards. I find this deeply problematic. Problematizing the scholars of tradition due to the fact that they don't match up to western standards is troubling.
Only scholars can interpret legal texts independently. A laymen cannot his make his own fatwa. You have to understand the methods of extraction of rulings, the Arabic language, the history etc. It isn't an easy task. When you have laymen saying " I interpret the text this way" then you know they are headed to disaster.
Secondly, if Scholar X comes out with a fatwa that is in opposition to the ijmaa of the Muslim scholars (one an ijmaa is achieved, it cant be challenged) then it is to be ignore
